Miko,
Terry's was the car I was thinking about. It is a turn key sorted and documented 308. We all watched him restore it
; ) I'd give him a call.

My experience shows that you are best off buying the BEST possible car you can afford. 'Fixer uppers' are not worth it with a 308 because the time and money involved is far too great. Trust me these cars eat time and I am a total do-it-yourselfer but even the 'best' cars will always need little things that will already occupy a lot of time. Having dealt with Terry in the past I can say that he is a first class guy and you can be sure of getting a really top car from him. He is very meticulous and put a lot of effort in making his 308 right. Sooner or later you will have to spend the money, with Terry's car you can just turn the key and go rather than always being in a state of 'repair'. In my eyes that has a value that far outweighs an asking price that is a little above 'market'. You get what you pay for and in Terry's car you are getting a really sorted car; the colour is sharp too.

Miko,
There is your car! Talk to Terry. Get one that someone else has spent the time and resources getting sorted. (Been there, done that on two Ferraris!) Sorry Terry, regardless of your expenses, a 77 GTB is worth maybe mid 20's. In your case, you might get 28 or 29k if you can find a appreciative buyer who understands the cars and what you have done to get it into the condition it is in; especially a buyer who has seen a few other 308's. $32K?, now you are talking low mileage, GTS, and garage queen... :-)

We ALL think our car is the best example, but the market just doesn't work that way...of course you may prove me wrong and get 32k tomorrow...

I have a really good '77 308GTB for sale. I am anxious to move it, bought a Daytona and my 911 is sitting in the rain until the 308 is gone.

I have spent $10K over the past year and over 300 hours bringing this car to top shape. It has 46K miles, all service records and history, just had complete belt service, all new modern A/C, suspension upgraded, TONS of new stuff. Fanatically detailed.

It could use the seats being dyed and a couple of other EXTREMELY minor interior details.... total parts costs of less than $300. Dont get me wrong, the interior looks immaculate, the color of the leather is just faded from the original. Im short on time. this is really a great 308, fantastic looking and ready to drive and enjoy without mechanical headaches of any kind. $32,500. If I do the dye work and details I'll want more. This 308 is fast, it has a Millermon conversion with MSD, no emissions and a Tubi.

Im $35K into it with all the stuff thats been done. I too can tell you from experience: you cannot buy one for the low $20's and make it into a car like this for the difference in price, even if you do the work yourself. Unless you just a glutton for financial punishment, buy a car someone else has sorted!

I'm $21K into my mechanically sound '77 308. It ran great when I bought it and I am just making it better....detailed 30K major, carb rebuild, gearbox rebuild, custom exhaust and new interior...We are all just caretakers of these cars until we pass them to the next owner!

More than other cars, it really pays to spend extra on a really nice Ferrari up front rather than try to sort a well used one with deferred maintenance. You will be better off to spend say 30K on a really nice one rather than 15-20K on a tired one. Trust me on this. Experience speaks.

Save for the extra money that it would take to buy a clean one. What you can see will be less than half of what it really needs once you get into it. In the end, you will have spent more for a car in lesser shape. The same holds true for most older sports cars.

Yes. Asking price for the car is important.

I'm $10k into my "mechanically sound" 308. Only *now* is it mechanically sound.

These are old cars--and the same components can and will fail. Alternator, fuel pump, water pump, possibly exhaust, hoses, wheel bearings, etc, spark plug wires/extenders, ignition coils, points, distributor caps, condensers, etc.

The service history is important. You'll want to do a compression test on all 8 cylinders of the engine before you buy.

Don't move on this until you've found out more information, and done a little more reading here.

The car has its fair share of miles--you'll want to know about regular oil changes, valve adjustments, etc. You want to see regular driving in the past three years, as well--otherwise, this and that may begin to fail as you start driving the car more and more than it has been... This has been my experience.

Welcome to FerrariChat! Post back here if you have any more questions...

There also info about he zipper in FerrariAds. The slow window fix is not hard, the procedure is on this site and very well written and easy to follow.
Wiper motor (if that's it) on ebay is about $100.
Carpets- Wilton is about $650

If you don't mind, how much is the one you're looking at? If I had to make my purchase again, I would probably buy from someone off this group that had a car with an established history.

Mike, go to the top of the page, on the right. click on FerrariAds. Many of the cars for sale are by fellow chatters. Good luck.

This may be stupid, but how do you access the Fchat 308 community?

You might check with our own local FChat 308 community, as I think there are a few being offered for sale. These cars have documented histories, and we all know the owners.
Best of luck for your 1st!

I am looking since more than a year to buy my 1st ferrari (no GTS, and 308 since it seems to most realistic price wise).

I would like to get advise on the following: 77 308 GTB #22795 with 78k miles.

My first personal inspection revealed that windiws electrical system is to be checked/changed (windows go up very slow), windshield wipers not working (stop regardless of the speed used), carpets torn to be changed, seats adjusters not working (but seat in great shape.
Except that, the exterior is in great shape (paint redone) with the usual front bumper bottom damage (euro type low bumper).
The car has the 16inch wheels (tires to be changed, no spare).
The luggage compartment zipper is to be replaced.
The current owner installed stainless 4-pipe exhaust in the past 3 years, and does have only 3 years of maintenance history for the car.
The car is mechanically sound with good idle after 3-5 min.

I intend to bring it to a PPI, but would like to know before is considering it is a mistake and what price range is realistic?

Thanks in advance...
