When we have track events in Louisiana with the Ferrari club, we'll have police escorts to the track, well, we used to go 100+ on the highway, but we had to stay at the speed limit a few times because local police in the areas we were traveling were complaining that our cars 'sounded' really fast?

Hi Vincent- buddy of mine in CHP says that it's a non-moving violation, and just a fix-it ticket. It will not show on your driving record.

Now onto my opinions :-)

Most cops won't know it's louder than stock... and those that do will like it :-)

I think just about anyone wants to hear a Ferrari, so you'll have far less problems than in say a Honda.

Heck, as long as you don't go tearing through the same neighborhood for an hour at about 1:00am, I doubt anyone would care if you put a Challenge/straight-pipe exhaust on your car and it shot fire 2feet out the rear on every shift!

If for some ungodly reason they ever do pull you over, just say "yeah, I know it's kinda loud, I was surprised when I got it, I try to stay off the throttle untill I'm out of residential areas." Be respectful, etc. Offer to take the cop out for a ride :-)

Best!
Ben.

Back in my law enforcement days if your exhaust was too loud and you failed the RAT (roadside attitude test) you didn't get a fix-it ticket. You got arrested for disturbing the peace. And so did your car/bike. But the norm by far is just a fix-it-ticket.

I got cited for a modified exhaust in my M3... had a stainless steel B&B exhaust. I was told by the judge it was a moving violation, but lucky for me the officer had checkmarked it as "dismissable". Just swapped it out and got it checked at the local sheriff's office.

On the other hand, for 6 months, I had my factory challenge exhaust on my 348, with punched cats... that thing was louder than anything, but didn't have any trouble with local police at all! The irony.

To my knowledge, they don't do a reading, but may require you to go into a sheriff station to do a decibel reading if it is excessively loud. (Art, you might be able to verify this one) I think for the most part, it's just a gut feel on their part - my explanation for why I didn't get into any trouble with my 348 is that half the time, I don't think they know HOW a ferrari should sound... if you have a honda civic and it is lowered with a loud exhaust, you are screaming for a ticket. When they see a ferrari with a loud tubi, they will more likely give you a "thumbs up." So, just do it and enjoy it, Vincent... you have the clutch rebuilt... why not just do the exhaust and test pipes?! :-)

Vincent,

I have had a couple of them with some of my Harleys, just a fix it ticket, if you dont have any Cop friends to sign it off, you will just have to pay it. It is the same as a Tinted Window ticket in CA. it does not show on your record.

Good Luck

Art,

I'll give you a call, and hopefully, if I get my clutch and can convince my Dad that waking up at 4:30 to take a ride is absolutely worthwhile, I will meet up with you before the gathering at FoSF . Glad to hear it's a fixit, I can live with that. I've had tickets, nothing too crazy, just couldn't afford to fix this one.

Modman,

What is D.W.A.?

In Hawaii those are just infractions that don't affect your insurance. There's so few 308's in Hawaii that the cops wouldn't be able to tell if it's stock or not :-)

Vincent:

Call me. The Tubi won't get you a ticket. Even if you get the ticket, it's just a fixit (that can be expensive, since the cost of removal, etc can easily exceed the cost of paying the ticket). What were you doing when you got the ticket?

Ken, Rob,

I am in California.

Mark.

Do these tickets affect your insurance? Or, are they just annoying?

When I lived in NY, they called it modified exhaust...basically if you didn't have the parts the EPA approved, you had an illegal exhaust. If nobody heard it, nobody cared. If the police thought it was too loud and it was not stock, you had a ticket. Pretty simple for them and really no way to beat it.....I used to collect them :-)

Are you in CA? They have a weird law. You can get a ticket for too loud but there is no official testing to see just how loud the car is. It's all unconstitutionally vague as I heard it but it will take a pioneer to challenge it as such.

Vincent;

sorry to hear about your run in with the law. I take it that it happened in cali?

i have yet to see or hear of a cop in the Phx AZ area giving a ticket for a noise violation. sometimes i wish they did i had a Harley fire up near my truck on day with open pipes and it shattered on of the windows from the vibration. Unfortunatly the pipes were so loud i could not get the owners attention to point out my broken window.

I dont know what is worse Fart cars or harley's with open pipes!!!

your exhaust is too loud?

Is an excessive noise violation considered a moving violation? How do they tell? can you ask to see the reading?

I'm considering a TUBI and reinstalling my test pipes, but I really shouldn't get another citation.

Vincent.
