S/N 14471 365 GTB/4 Spyder had motor No. 1256/B.
S/N 14481 365 GTB/4 Berlinetta had motor No. 1250/B

So yes, I would speculate that S/N 14491 365 GTB/4 Berlinetta with motor No. 1278/B probably is the original motor. It certainly falls within the correct range of numbers!

According to Gerald's book, chassis 14441 has engine B1158, which is the closest reference to this car. Consequently, engine B1278 is likely the original for this car.

Gerald, you're right. I don't know what I was thinking; maybe the 275 (SN 6667 I think)I use to own.

I forgot that the matching numbers stopped around the time of the Daytona.

Thanks for setting me straight.

No. The engine type for a 365 GTB/4 was 251.

B1278 is the engine number (a.k.a. "numero interno").

Drew, I would be VERY surprised if your Daytona, S/N 16687, had the chassis number stamped on the block. Ferrari quit doing "matching numbers" in the very, very early 1970's. Did you ever actually see that number on the block?

Thanks Dr. Ibrahim,

So is B1278 the engine type for a Daytona? I had a 73 (SN 16687) and the engine number matched the chassis number. I was just wondering if B1278 was the designation of a 365GTB/4 engine. Thought I might learn something.

I don't want to bother Mr. Roush on this as I am not interested in this particular car. I was just curious. Thanks,

Drew Altemara

if you want more information on that particular daytona, the best person to contactis Gerald Roush of the Ferrari Market Letter. He has a vast knowledge of this model, and he will be able to help you the most. The engine type does not mean the engine has been replaced.

Could someone look at this Daytona on ebay for me under vehicle description?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2419371028&category=6212#carfax

Is this the case of a replacement engine in the original chassis or is this just the type engine number that was given to Daytona engines?

Thanks,

Drew
