i also raced atlantics in scca nationals years ago. at the time i ran a ralt rt-1 w/ a hart bda. what a screamer!! the first real ground effect cars were the ralt rt-4/5's. they appeared in 1984. i also ran with a honda program in the imsa firehawk series. i remember that we ran as fast as 2:15's on the non-innerloop course. it always seemed that we were hammering at that pace...to think about a current atlantic car going 30+ sec./lap faster makes me smile!! |

Jon great post- The pain it took to get under 2:00 was great. Every second below 2 seemed like a struggle. Our front wings were only the fiber glass shape and not really wings. 1977 March's were not ground effects as they came in 1980, I think. I enjoyed your up to date post of times and really appreciate modern times relating to current technology! |

"Anything with a roof that can break 2:00 is fast." LOL - very true, Jon, and well said as always, always enjoy your racing comments. Since I didn't time myself when I was at the Glen a month or so ago, I can only assume I was doing 57s ;-). |

David, Just to give you an idea how far FA cars have come. Multiple Run Off's champion Larry Connor turned a 1:46 last year. Only thing faster is an LMP900 Prototype which turns 1:41's (Riley and Scott). Anything with a roof that can break 2:00 is fast. Jon

The fastest time I recorded in a 1977 Formula Atlantic in a SVRA event was 1:57 for the long course. Any time below 2:00 is outstanding, as the course I believe is 3.4 miles long. |

John, When I was there in 2001 the pole time for a 360 C was 1:59:10 set by the driver for Ferrari of Beverly Hills. Might have been broken last year don't know. Pole time for a 355 C is 2:04 something I believe. Regards, Jon P. Kofod 1995 F355 Challenge #23 FLATOUT RACING Website: http://neverlift.homestead.com/flatout.html |

Does anyone know what kind of lap times the 360 Challenge cars do at Watkins Glen? |
