Hey guys Im not bashing americans, but lets get real you guys are terrible at speaking anything thats latin, in spanish like italian it all sounds like you just visit the dentist and still have a numb mouth, and cant never get the masculine or femenine right. Modena is somewhat easier like this MO THE NA as in MOTHER but take the R out and ad NA. Another crazy one is COUNTACH, the real way is more like COUNTACT or COONTACT. Now dont feel bad, just go to europe and see how terrible many latin countries are at english specially Italia and Espana.

I think if you own the car, you should be able to say it right. Not like Missy Elliot who called her Lambo "Moor-See-Law-Go" on MTV Cribs.

A little bonus for learning the pronunciation of vowels as used in Italian and Spanish is that they are nearly the same as Japanese as well. And then you will never order "sah-key" again. (it's sah-kay) or be forced to sing carry-oh-key (it's closer to car-ah-oh-kay). Then we can work on how to say Tokyo (let's just say it's only two syllables, not toe-key-oh).

Language is fun but everyone messes up something so it's no point getting too worked up about it. How about placenames that are not just pronounced differently but are actually different words in English than in the native language of that place? We say Rome, Turin, Vienna, Munich, etc.

No, I think ToneLoc had it right!

On the 8th day, after god's 6 days of creating the heavens and the earth and after his 7th day, on which, he rested, god realized he still had two more goodies in his bag of tricks...

He spoke to Adam & Eve:
"i have two more additions to your lives; one for each of you. However, it is up to you to decide who gets what. The first thing i have is the ability to pee standing up-"

"Ooh! Ooh! i gotta have that!" Adam said... "Me! Me! i must be able to pee standing up!"

"Ok, Adam", god said, "since you're so adamant about wanting that, behold- you now have the ability to pee standing up. Eve, i guess you're stuck with multiple orgasms, sorry."

There's probably at least 18 individuals claiming to be Jesus Christ...and that's in the great state of California alone!

Good Italian lesson here.
I noticed some foreign words are pronounced as English while original pronunciation is different. Ex., Jesus Christ. Original sound & English pronunciation is totally different, I used to think they were 2 different people.

A few rules of Italian - all letters have a sound. You pronounce all letters in a word. The only silent letter is "h".

An "i" in Italian is pronounced as "e"

An "e" in Italian is pronounced as "a"

Modena is pronounced as Moh day na, with a slight emphasis on the "day". The "Moh" is pronounced between "mo" and "ma". It is not exactly like "mo", but is a hard "o" thus sounding more like "ma".

'mod IN a'

'MOD eena' is considerably to the south of 'mod IN a'.

i've always understood it to be pronounced: "MOD-nuh", with a variation on whether you'd like to include that e ('eh' sound) in the middle or pronounce it like it's a two-syllable word... The guy at Bentley pronounced it mo-DEE-nuh and that was a little disconcerting as i've never heard it pronounced that way, on all the television programs and yadda yadda...

Like Andrew said, you could just say 360, but i'd never feel quite comfortable without knowing the truth...

Jim- I laughed when I read your post and then stopped when I realized I had no idea:-):-):-)

The guy pronounced it with the MOD as in like modify. I as in it. NA as in ummmm well NA. I figured I had to be somewhat wrong. So now the real question. Which one of you is right? :-)

As far as I'm aware, the accent is on the first part of the word, and it's spoken like it almost has two syllables. Like this: "Moah-dena".

TC you're right; nobody needs to correct anyone - it's the message that counts. Unless you're in Italy, where the message won't get through.Oh, and I do say "Feyrrrari". I love the sound of it. It goes with the car. I even say it to the car when I see it!
lol

Right, anyway Matt, I think that the driver was right and your friend's account was true.

However you are comfortable enunciating Modena. Most people (including me) say Modayna. I have also heard Modeena.

This is interesting, James pronouncing that "James is right". :-)

I think the thread that Willis referred to did not come up with a firm conclusion.

Whilst many people in that thread thought that it should be "Mo-den-a", there was a post which suggested that the Italian pronounciation should be "Mo-din-a".

I confess that I am confused, and that I still do not know which one is the correct answer.

It's all a matter of context. In my opinion it's not "incorrect" or "improper" if the person who you're trying to communicate with understands what the heck you're referring to. In my experience it makes sense to modify pronunciations depending on who the audience is.

Have you ever gone into a mexican restaurant and ordered a Margarita by pronouncing it correctly? That blonde behind the bar would look at you like you were speaking greek (spanish).

Porsche is pronounced Pour-sha. Sure, say it that way among car folks and at the PCA meets, but if you're going around correcting people all the time you're going to look like a pompous ass.

I say these pronunciation sticklers shouldn't be hypocritical and should always pronounce "Ferrari" with the appropriate Italian accent as well (no more "Fur are ee"). Now that would be hilarious.

How do you pronounce Porsche? How do you pronounce Paris? How do you pronounce Taj Mahal? Coupe? Tomato? BMW? Stradale? Vase? Etc., etc.

Noone's rolling over in their grave...pronounce it as you can. If you really butcher it, someone will correct you.

If you are in Firenze and want to take the train to Modina they won't know what you're talking about. Trust me, Jennie and I found that out in my younger years. :-)

There was a post over a year ago (even late 2001?) which included a link to a site where you could get a .wav file and listen to the correct pronounciation. It was definitely not "mo-DEE-nah". Try a search in the archives.

Matt,

Enzo would roll over in his grave if he heard someone pronounce it Modina. Modena was Enzo's birth city and it is definitely Modena (Mo-den-ah). BTW, I worked with Ferrari for the last three years so I have a little experience with the proper pronunciation.

Hope that helps. I am sure that there are many others on this list who also own Ferraris and will agree with my explanation. Mr. Glickerhaus, how about you??

Ok guys here is the deal. I'm pretty sure I'm 99% correct on this but help me out.

I got a call from a friend the other day who knows how I am about Ferrari. I've had him watch a few F1 races with me and he has sat there while I've talked his head off about everything I know about them. So when he told me actually got to see check one out I was for him.

He said he was sitting outside of work and this "red ferrari" pulls up and the owner steps out of the car. My friend went over and complimented him on the car, recognized it was a Ferrari and asked what model. The owner replied "It's a 360 MODINA". When my friend was telling me the story I stopped him and said you mean Modena. He said no it was a "Modina". Once again I corrected him and he kept telling me I was wrong. The owner of the car called it that and my friend keeps thinking I am wrong on this.

To be honest I hope I am but like I said I'm almost positive I'm pronouncing it correctly. I really really hope the owner said Modena and my friend misunderstood. I know this is a little thing really and it's no big deal but for some reason I can't seem to believe the guy bought this 200,000 dollar car and doesn't know how to pronounce it. I am far from an expert on these. I have only seen the car once for a few minutes and other than that I have hardly in person experience with them but that's the same as calling my car a Acura Intigra. I'm a huge enthusiast for Ferrari but at the end of the day that's all I am and he's the guy driving the car. If the owner is on this sight (I'm pretty sure he's not) congratulations on the car. I'm not trying to bash the guy here but more or less settle this arguement with my friend. Thanks for the help again guys.:-)
