The reason the reserve is met is because a low reserve means that to post the car in ebay wont cost to much money. The higher the reserve the more you have to pay to place anything on ebay for sale. If the car isnt a total wreck I bet he wont sell it.

Martin, I think you will find that in regards to policing their site and members, especially in the auto sales area, eBay is useless.

I have corresponded with them on another matter where a seller (a dealer this time) refused to sell on a "no-reserve" auction. They had no interest in getting involved. The seller was a frequent lister and I am sure they were more interested in keeping his business than in keeping him honest.

Keep us posted.

Lucas,

this one if for you, and this is the reason why e-bay related topics are IMPORTANT!!!

My letter to e-bay support:

The seller of this item: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2421499599

is trying to lure people to send money to a so called escrow service which contains 5 online pages only and is hosted by some fly by night company. They claim to be affiliated with some other coompany which does not exist and claim to be in business since 5 years but the site has been up only since April of this year.

Take this guy out. IMMEDIATELY!!!!

Check his credit card info and my understanding is he is already wanted by the FBI. Check with them as well.

Check a discussion at Ferrari Chat, a Ferrari community:

http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/21/276862.html?1056985153

You will see the last bidder that has filed already with the FBI.

Time you guys do something as well.

Lets see if we can frustrate this guy!
I am bidding with an account that I only use for possible fraudulant transactions.
He will be waisting a lot of money posting on e-bay and have high bidders that will not perform!

Hello to all of you. Yes the ad was a scam. I was the high bider on that car. The car is far sale in CA by D-C Motors, and yes the escrow company is his. I contacted the FBI and they said that it sounds like a guy that they already are trying to go after. Funny thing is he has already put the ad back on ebaymotors.

I would be less suspicious if the EBAY seller was a dealer. I don't think I would ever buy a car on EBAY from a private seller... Too much to loose.

The high ebay fees are a joke!! I have sold a car on EBAY recently and they charge a flat fee of $40.00 regardless of sales price!!!

Lucas, maybe I am missing the true feeling behind your post but I can't tell if you are being serious and tweaking us for discussing this or just being wryly humorous.

I have purchased only one car out of state.
I do not have experience here in purchasing
multiple exotic cars over time that other
members have.

ALL cars on ebay look good IMHO.
How often do sellers display pics of
damage ? They do occasionally.

But if you are going to pay some
serious money for you (whatever
that might be); is it not worth it
to grab a flight and look at it ?
Find someone to put some eyes on
the car ? Have an independent
pull a PPI.

I spoke with a guy who had a car
that seemed to good to be true.
I asked him if I could pay for
someone to flatbed his car for
a PPI. He said he could not do
that. I walked. Case closed.
It was fine for the mechanic to
drive 150 miles out in the middle
of nowhere. He just could not
have an independent tow company
(of his choice) deliver the car
for a proper PPI.

I know there are some reliable dealers
that HONESTLY describe the car and will
tell you they will give you your $ back;
if you do not like it.

I have seen cars I really liked on ebay.
I just could not bring myself to bid on
it. How do I know the person standing
behind the car ?

I am sure it works sometimes. But what
will you do if it does not work ? That
airline ticket seems to provide inexpensive insurance.

It's ALWAYS a scam. Did anyone see the '02 360 SPYDER on sale on DuPont Registery for $100,000?
It's in the middle east and you have to send money first. They all will require wiring through Western Union and the same low cost can be found with NSX, Porsche, etc auctions. One I looked into provided a VIN # for a vehicle that was at a dealer in Texas and the Texas dealer knew nothing about it. Don't be fooled.

I think Mr. Doody is on the right track. Both the seller AND the bidder have ZERO feedback. Before I buy anything on eBay, I always check the feedback and what they typically sell. If you've got a character who's been selling beanie babies and then all of a sudden is auctioning a 360 and requires full payment to an escrow, I'd be skeptical. Not to say this isn't possible, just do your homework and get an inspection and even a copy of the title if possible. I've only purchased one vehicle off eBay (Land Rover Defender 90), sight unseen and luckily, everything worked out. Sent the check, crossed my fingers and waited two long weeks for delivery to my doorstep. It's possible to find what you want on eBay and at the right price, but I think it's just as easy to get scammed. Buyers beware and do your due diligence.

There are always sales on ebay where
the following occurs:

Gosh how could that be. It is so low.

The question is not what it costs, but
what do get when it comes off the truck ?

EBay doesn't need to worry about these auctions with way you guys police them already. Just take the extra step of always harassing sellers and warning buyers and the public should be safe and sound. Consider it your Ferrari duty.

Luke.

Hi
I asked if I could view and test drive the car the reply I got was

"Hello. You will be able to inspect and have tst drive after payment is wired to escrow account"

As if you are going to pay without seeing it!!

Hi
I contacted the seller and asked "why is the reserve so low". The reply was "because of the high e-bay fees" this is a very fishy auction.

Thanks

I remember that auction Will. Interesting post-script on that one.

From time to time you will find good buys on eBay. Such as this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=6212&item=2418871144

Regards.

I second that, Will. I would either buy the car from a reputable individual (The Ferrari world is not that big) or an authorized dealer. The extra money over a screaming eBay deal is well spent, as you know what you're getting, and you're getting what you're paying for.

A month or so ago I saw a suspiciously low priced 360 on eBay. Sent the Ohio seller an e-mail asking a few questions (VIN, for example) about the time the auction ended. Got back a reply with a sad story about how seller was a woman left penniless, selling the 360 then headed back home to Europe, claiming to be about to drive the car to North Carolina, willing to take a side trip to meet me in DC, and oh by the way she'd been unable to reach the winning bidder after several inquiries. I asked for the VIN again, offered to meet her at a Ferrari dealership for a ppi, and asked about the winning bidder. Also told seller the car was worth a lot more than she was asking - she argued with me about that one, LOL. Seller told me she didn't know where to find the VIN, and mentioned her need for a deposit. Finally I e-mailed the winning bidder directly, who told me that he'd been unable to reach the seller. Gave the winner my info about seller and stepped aside. Who knows, maybe it was legit, but life is too short. I buy my cars from my local dealer, perhaps pay more, but feel I know what I'm getting.

This is one of the big problems with Ebay. As much as I love it and use it, they have a real problem with fraud, and do little to police or prevent it.

THIS IS A SCAM!

BEWARE

The "escrow" site claims to be a subsidiary of "Hartshed Trading". THERE IS NO SUCH COMPANY! Call the 800# - just busy. The site is pretty cheesy. The domain name was registered on April 2003 (funny since the site claims to have been in operation since 1998) and it is registered to

Leah Ballard
3804 Ashley Court
Rolling Meadows, IL 60008
847-255-4325

Strange that the site only consists of 4 or 5 pages and does not list their address ANYWHERE.

The name server for that domain is "dialzip.net". If you visit their website, they throw a ton of pop-up ads but the only text on the screen is "server normal". Sounds like a big ISP right? Seems fishy that this big Escrow company, a division of the famed Hartshed Trading would use the seemingly fly-by-night "dialzip" ISP to host their domain name!

This has scam written all over it. I wonder who this Leah chick is? Someone ought to call that number and ask what her affiliation with "My Escrow" is!

The seller has no feedback, the reserve has been met at a ridicuously low amount. I sense some major red flags on this car. Does anyone know anything about it?
