Lee:

I forgot to mention that the Pistons were changed as well which resulted in an increase in the compression ratio from 10.2:1 to 10.8:1 if memory serves me.

Lee:

The 512TR was the second series car. The F512M was a limited edition model of which just under 500 were made. For the US 75 cars were produced and each chassis was numbered with a plaque inside the car.
The differences between the M and the 512TR are much more significant than most realise. To begin with the car was lightened by approx. 150lbs versus the 512TR. Engine alterations were significant. The Con Rods were made of Titanium and the crankshaft was lightened by close to 15lbs. The M revs much faster than the 512TR as a result. While the factory listed the peak hp on the M as only 12 more than the 512TR(440vs428) I believe the difference is quite a bit more. At the top end of the rev range the M has earth shattering power. I do have a Koenig chip on mine as well as Tubi and no cats so the performance is huge. To give you an idea of the potential of the engine, an M was campaigned in the UK by Allan Cosby in the Historic Challenge series which reportedly made 580hp in race trim. My car has about what I would guess is 500 in current trim.
The Chassis on the M also was modified to make sharper transitions with steering input than the 512TR. The springs are considerably stiffer and the car rides a bit firmer so it has even less body roll. It is not quite as forgiving at the limit as the 512TR.
The cosmetic differences you know...fixed open headlights, round taillights, new 3 piece wheels, NACA ducts on the hood ala F40.
Most people think it is just a cosmetic change from the 512TR but that is really not the case. I have seen figures from Fiorano which show the F512M to be about 2 seconds faster per lap than the 512TR. It is a special car that will hold its value and I believe will see significant appreciation in the next 10-15 years.I hope this answers your question.
Regards,
Mark

I picked up my '91 TR back in March, and have put only 1100 miles on it since. I'm still getting used to pulling the lap belt on manually, as that is not automatic. Only the shoulder/torso belt is automatic. I have yet to have the recall done, and the original system is still working fine.

Dr. Moon:

Can you elaborate somewhat on the differences between the TR series? How many were there? Are the 512M and the 512TR synonomous?

I love the TR series also but the differences have had me confused for some time. There's very little cosmetic difference, right?

Thanks...

Max:

I have owned all three TR series. You have good taste! The cars are simply wonderful and very visceral. There is a HUGE difference however between the 1st series TR and the 512TR. The F512M can be tuned to run a tick slower than a F50. The 512TR is probably the best car for the money in the series but if you can stretch for the F512M I recommend it highly!
I was told the sealtbelt recall was "open" so that whenever you need a future service you can have them done too.
Good choice and good luck.

I really enjoy the seatbelts in mine, is an '88 and this way I always were them since I never do in the 328 gts. Ferrari of North America just sended a letter to me about the recall for the seatbelts and I just had it done. It says feb. 2003 now in the seatbelts. But I was after the dealership for more than 6 months since they told me to wait because Ferrari had new ones that were better than the ones they were installing a few months before.

Big question is: When do they add the 348 to this recall?

FWIW (from the latest issue of the Ferrari Market Letter):

TESTAROSSA RECALL

Ferrari Testarossas, 512 TRs and F512 Ms manufactured between October 1986 and December 1995 are the subject of a recent recall campaign. According to the NHTSA notice this recall concerns the passive restraint system which may not function correctly. Inconsistent electrical operation of the automatic track assembly has been experienced. If the passive restraint system experiences an electrical or mechanical failure, the seat occupant would not be fully protected. This is NHTSA Recall No. 03V142 and Ferrari Recall No. 37. Ferrari began owner notification of this recall April 14, 2003.

I believe that the automated seat belts where from 87-95, including the 512M. ONLY when Ferrari came out with air bags, where they able to delete the automated seat belt system.

I just got my 88 TR back from the dealer today. They replaced the complete automated seat belt system with a "better" one.....still automated. This was due to a recall by Ferrari.......NO cost. During the 6 years I had the car, they weren't annoying.......you just get used to it. Make sure the car you buy had the recall done. This recall was for ALL TRs with the automated system.

Good luck.

My 1986 Testarossa has the plain old standard seat belts like you find in every car today. I think they switched to the passive restraint system in 1987 or so. Enjoy your search.

I really love the look of the TR. I would like to find the latest version (512M). Do all years have the quirky seatbelts (automatic shoulder belts)?

Are these annoying or does one get used to them?
