Hey Ed, were Olds and Chevy in a race to reach the market with a turbocharged car? I was thinking the corvair Turbo hit the market a few months later.

Sad to say but I am old enough to have used this stuff. I still own a 1965 Corvair Turbo. I aquired a case of the stuff when I worked for Oldsmobile from 1974 til 1980. We had it in the Parts Dept. and wrote it off as obsolete. I only have the one bottle left. I have Dealer literature from some interesting years with some little known facts. The Corvair by the way did not use the Fluid but had a much lower compression ratio and used a Pressure Retard that looked just like a vacuum advance diaphragm but worked in reverse and would retard the spark when the pressure came up.

Ed, I gotta ask. How and why did you happen to have a bottle of Olds rocket fluid laying around?

Congratulations! We have a winner! Tyler is the Car Guy of the Week. The Olds Jetfire used an aluminum 215 cu.in. V-8 with 215 HP with 10.25 compression. It used a Methanol injection system with a seperate reservoir for the Turbo Rocket Fluid to control detonation when the boost came up. 12 13

If I'm correct I believe the system actually used a mixture of methyl alcohol and water?

They used a fluid injection system, or "water injection" as it was commonly known.

The Oldsmobile Jetfire in 1963 was one of the first mass produced turbocharged American cars. How did they control "Detonation" or "Spark Knock" in the engine.
