well, if you look at your own objections this is why one would only be willing to pay a rock-bottom price for a car. You have the objection it may be broken, it may need a service need this and that. If I bid on a 355B today I bid low $60s. That does not mean the car is worth that much! You are all taking ebay too serious as well as those that rate pricing on the FML (sorry Gerald). Those are the highest prices you can possibly find. Dreamers advertising. ON eBay it is dreamers bidding! |

Gerald said it best in a previous posting that there is no real way to acquire a listing of accurate "real world" selling prices on Ferraris or other cars. The truth is, very few sellers will be honest and forthcoming about what they ACTUALLY sell their cars for. Pride, the tax man, and other factors always keep the TRUE selling prices forever shrouded in mystery. Something is only worth as much as somebody is willing to give. I've yet to see anything that couldn't be sold on Ebay if the seller TRUELY WANTED to sell his item. Ferraris aren't sacred cows, they're tangible collectibles like any other item. If they can sell a Honus Wagner baseball card on Ebay, they can sell a Ferrari for whatever it's REALLY worth.

Ebay is advertising. i use it that way and it works. Of Course the car does not sell on eBay neither would I buy a car on ebay direct without doing a PPI or getting the deal of a lifetime. I bought a 308 through ebay being the high bidder because it was a steal. I bought two 355s on ebay but had PPIs done before I paid. Deals were done after the auction ended. So these folks sold their cars, means it does work!

Lots of people are like Arlie and don't understand what they're seeing on EBay. Some cars are posted with an unrealistically high reserve so they won't sell; the owner just wants the advertising value to close the deal privately. Some members here have done that. These cars do not mean owners don't know what they are worth although sometimes you can laugh at the 'Buy It Now' prices. Some cars are a real POS or at least fairly rough. Your low 20's 308's probably all need some TLC and major services. These cars don't mean you can get a pristine 308 for the low 20's in spite of claims of 'showroom condition'. Some cars are realistically priced and even sell; lots of times the auction is ended early so the seller doesn't have to go through EBay. And sometimes a true deal is struck on EBay for all to see. I find EBay interesting and most people in to Ferraris should be able to spot what's going on with most offerings. Lots of people here have even uncovered frauds based on the info the "seller" provided. So I think it's presumptious to make blanket statements about the owners thinking they don't know what they're doing. |

Hey HORSEFLY,,, you are wrong, there are millions of buyers but most cant afford a Ferrari or Lamborghini, the reason you see those prices are because of ignorants that believe that because its in an auction in ebay that then it most be cheap, and also many of those cars are never sold. Its like those ads that say police auction come and buy porsches, ferrari, lamborghini, helicopters, boats, and lear jets for "pocket change". I know of people selling Testarossas for $60,000 in ebay but those cars are not up to date. No one will do a major on those and new clutch and say its perfect and sell it for that amount, a '90 testarossa without the major and with a half a life in clutch its worth at least $65,000. And stay away of low mileage, that will mean maybe another $3,000 to get the bugs out because of parts going bad from no use, an ac compressor is $1,800, get the picture. We the owners dictate the market not the buyer, if we dont sell low then the real buyers will put up and pay the cash that these cars are really worth. A viper or nsx or corvette owners are not the type of people who got $35,000 to rebuild a flat 12 motor, if they have the cash then they are not willing to pay these amounts of green just to make the car go. |

Ebay serves a useful purpose. Without Ebay, how would people know that nearly every antique and collectable car is grossly overpriced and overrated by their owners. It's hard to say a car is worth $50,000 dollars when the high bid only reaches $20,000 after a week on the market and millions of potential buyers having the opportunity to bid.

Lucas, The reason is that otherwise we could end up having endless topics and sub-topics. The Ebay threads are often inter-twined with threads on general buying tips and purchase decisions on Ferraris. They often need to be posted together, rather than seperately. If YOU don't like Ebay threads, then don't click on them. Simple. |

Back on topic, I think there are more than enough eBay topice (Ferrari and otherwise) that it is a great idea to have an eBay group. It could even be structured like the "BICKERING" grouping of threads so that it would not clutter up the main menu. |

So sorry I'm late... I was off contributing to society, not dragging from its trailing edge. Anyway: 1) I'm not from the South. (not that that should be insulting and not that it is any of Donny's business) 2) I find is oh-so humorous that the best Donny could muster as come backs to me were three cute pics he found on the net and a misdirected attack on my cultural identity, yet he accused *me* of being dumb! Do we all see the irony? Good. Seriously, if Donny has a Ferrari he is either VERY lucky or sponsored by Mom and Dad, because someone with that kind of mental capacity certainly is not the archetypal owner in my book. 3) Thank you, Martin, for making a valid contribution. Luke. PS, I would like to keep this thread alive, though, as I still find the original topic interesting. |

I'll relax, when you do the decent thing... You can't just gloss over an issue like this and hope it goes away In the interests of keeping Luke's discussion alive and on the off-chance that someone can make a valid contribution to the eBay discussion... I'll take the debate elsewhere. |

Given the strength of the statement, I would not call that an apology. "Where's the Ferrari love?" is not an apology. He insulted more people than Lucas with his statement. If Ferrari owners feel that this kind of behaviour is acceptable, then i'll take the non-Ferrari owners in a heart-beat. I've seen his behaviour on other forums... people get a really high post count and think that it's worth something. They overvalue their opinion and contribution to the point that they think its OK to persecute people in an attempt to embarrass them. This was the whole basis of the Tony attack and it's where "The Don" started with this tread. I must admit that i've never seen any individual on any board stoop so low as to attack a cultural/racial group publicly. What else can he do? .. Write a specific formal apology then ask Rob to close the thread.

Luke, as far as your orignal post, I think it is important. We keep an eye out for thisngs that happen with the cars we love. Keeps the community informed as well as aware of scum that it trying to pass up a quick scam. The reason I am here this minute is, I am writing e-bay about that guy with the 355 escrow trying to get him off e-bay before someone gets hurt. If you do not like the discussion on e-Bay related thigns, don't click the topic and continue down to the next one about fish license plate frames or waxes. You have a choice. You see e-bay in the heading, don't click on it! I found a car because someone posted a "look what is on eBay". I am thankfull they did, ebcuase I can not keep track with e-bay on 10 different models.

There is plenty of good contribution. The reason why you can edit is so you can think about it again and delete it on second reading. I have done it numerous times. Since he has apologized for it, what is your point LWR? What more do you want him to do.

Don... I find your comments really offensive. The fact that you've tried to edit them out so that no-one would notice is even more offensive. Please point me to a thread where you've made a valid contribution... all I've seen recently is your flame-war with Tony, useless graphic images to keep your post count up and attempts to insult large portions of the population with generally unfunny and inciteful posts. Maybe you'd like to apologise to some of us inbred southern hillbillies (even the honorary ones like me)? LWR PS... I do have a VIN number... you can see it anytime...

I have neither the will nor the energy to count the percentage of FChat posts that retail to either: a) look at what I saw on EBay! (and its ugly, funny, strange, etc) b) look at what I saw on EBay! (and it's priced too cheep so think its a scam) c) look at what I saw on EBay! (and I'd like to buy it but I think it's a scam) d) look at what I saw on EBay! (and check out how much they want for it!) e) EBay sucks. ...but I find it all a bit overwhelming (and annoying). What about you all? Perhaps we need an EBay discussion area? Luke. |
