It's all about the right speed for the time, and road/weather conditions. Reckless speeding in a residential area (or school area) is just plain wrong. I wholeheartedly agree with Martin; it's the idiots behind the wheel that are the source of the trouble.

Responsibility is the key. Any time we walk out our front doors we put our lives in danger, but that's no reason to hide in fear. I love driving fast, I just try not to put others in danger.

at the same token I make a point to drive 15Mph in school zones and the posted limit in residential neighborhoods. This is where pets and children get killed. Driving to the office I drive in first gear for 4 blocks at 20Mph to get out of my neighborhood onto the main road.

I agree it is driving responsible.100 does not kill people. Idiots driving 100 kill people!

I have driven very fast (190Mph) on the German Autobahn and no worries. I have driven 60Mph in a 55Mph and had near accidents. A drunk driver can drive only 30Mph and kill a pedestrian. We had one fatal accident some years back in our town.

Well Bill I think that if you are completly sober, and you are fully alert while driving on a mostly empty highway or backroad..speeding within a reasonable limit is ok.. (i.e. maybe like 95-100mph in a 65) would be ok.

we have to remember what we are driving after all, but also drive responsibly

This is a tragic story. I have a brain injured brother whose life was ruined when he was hit by a speeding truck.

Unfortunately, residential areas are not the only places this can happen. I've known too many people who have hit a pothole at 100+ mph and vaporized themselves and others. Or an animal or human unexpectedly appeared out of nowhere on a seemingly deserted highway. Save the high speed runs for the track. Its one thing to ruin your own life . Ruining the lives of others is unacceptable.

well stephen I agree with not speeding at 3am in a residential area with police but I think that anytime of the day is a good time to speed, on the highway or backroads only though :-)

Yes, don't speed in residential areas. Also...

Don't speed at 3am
Don't speed at 3am intoxicated
Don't speed at 3am intoxicated, past police, in a residential area.

What an idoit. Under these circumstances a Ferrari is no different than a loaded gun.

Damn. Whoever said it here originally was right, dont speed where people are around. Just keep it that simple and you will be at a very low chance of ever having trouble.

William: In my first post I clearly expressed my sympathy for the victim and his family and criticised the behaviour of the driver. In my second (later) post I merely asked whether the car would be fixed. I am sorry that my second question offended you, but I clearly did not forget the victim (as you seem to imply).

That really is very sad. Reminds me of that Lamborghini and Corvette street race... Lamborghini swerved into oncoming traffic. Driver of the Lambo was killed as well as an occupant in a car he struck head on.

On the Corvette Forum (www.corvetteforum.com), we have "Save It For The Track" decals to put on your driver side window.... very sad indeed.

Damn, there is more to this story than we will ever know. Some people just don't get it, speed kills. Who cares if the car can be fixed, what about the man he killed. Did he have a family or kids? Think about it. Sorry all, I just needed to vent.

This guy gives ferrari owners a bad name in the eye of the public. As if the general public didnt already think of ferrari owners as snobby, now they probably think worse now.

I would think the owner of a 348 would have a little more common sence..100mph in a residential neighborhood.. still cant believe it

Yeah, your heart has to go out to the victim and his family. Perhaps there should be an intelligence test given to people before they're allowed behind the wheel of a car (especially something as Hi-po as a Ferrari). That driver was an absolute idiot.

I live *very* close to where this happened. 4th Avenue is bad news. There are way too many spoiled, testosterone inflated, knuckle draggers patrolling Bay Ridge in high dollar exotics, unfortunately.

Really a tragic waste.

A 23 year old idiot who gave us all a bad name. Probably not even his car. By the way, I have a self imposed rule of never speeding in residential areas. Only bad things can happen, kids, dogs, old women, etc...
Breaks my heart to read this.
