Also whatever you do DON"T use a lighter so you can see in the fill hole while finding the leak.

Sparklers can also cause problems while filling.

I had the same problem on my Mondial after removing and replacing this hose. My looked fine and clamps were tight but it leaked. I found that you had to get enough hose on both connecting pipes to get a good seal. Take the clamps off and push more hose on both ends turn it a little to make sure no binds and put the clamps back on.

Henry, I did feel (using my hand, no tools) for tightness of the hose clamps. They appeared to be tight and in place. But I do think you're right as the hose looks brand new (car has 10k miles). I will double check on this.

Ken: Did you check the tightness of the stainless steel hose clamps that secure the rubber portion of the filler tube? This may be your problem......10 year old hoses, are not that old, IMO. This is a simple check, very easily done in your own garage.

One end could be loose.....if so, make sure the rubber portion didn't slip down too far.

And don't use the cellphone while pumping. Especially don't use the cellphone with a cigarette in (either) side of your mouth while pumping.

I will take my car in for repair first thing next week. WWoC has been servicing this car since day one. The problem is WWoC is a little far, and not a good idea to drive with a leaking fuel hose. They may not come tow it for a simple hose problem. Anyway, I'll give them a call on Monday and see what happens. Will mention your name Jim.

The Vinny I'm looking for is Vinny at AutoElite in Fort Lee.

I'll keep you posted. Have a wonderful 4th of July weekend!

Here in the South the solution is to just move your cigarette to the other side of your mouth while filling.

Seriously, good luck to a quick fix.

"I also heard of this Vinny guy in NJ (where is he located?)."

Dunno if this is who you're talking about, but there's a Vinny D'Amico in Vineland (southern NJ). Best mechanic I've ever seen -- on Alfas. I haven't been to his shop since the '80s, but I never saw a Ferrari there. I know he doesn't like to work on Fiats.

Dr Ken
I wouldn't wait. I'd get that car to WWOC.
Mention my name.
Best

I spent some time looking at the engine bay today. I found the plastic hose connecting from the fuel filler to the fuel tank. It appears that the only way for any gasoline to get into the wheel well is from a leak at the filler/hose connection. The hose appeared to be in excellent condition and I was unable to detect any cracks or abnormality with my eyes and hands, but I'm not taking any chances. After all, my 348 is almost 10 years old.

I'm surprised to find that it is a rubber hose for gasoline. Sounds to me like another bad engineering decision. Perhaps you should all check the condition of this hose for safety reasons.

I also heard of this Vinny guy in NJ (where is he located?). Should I take the car to him or the usual WWoC for this? The problem with WWoC is that it is about 100 miles from where I live.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks to all again!

If it leaks in the early stages, then I would say David's explanation is the most plausible.

FIND THAT LEAK!!!!!!!!!!!! AND FIX IT!!!!!!

Thanks Henry and David! The leaking occured during the early stage of the fillup. I am not a mechanic but will try my best to see where the leak is coming from tomorrow. Yea I don't buy that overflow story either. From reading 'roasting a 308' it does sound like I have a leaking rubber hose. And lucky for me my car didn't catch fire or anything.

Needless to say, it scared the cr*p out of me today.

Follow the overflow hose, and see if that is where the gas is coming from. I don't buy the statement of "filling too fast"....I always use the highest setting on the nozzle, and have NEVER had any gas leaks.

Does it leak towards the end of the fillup, when the tank is almost full, or throughout the fillup?

On the 308 there is a rubber hose between the filler neck and the tank. Mine was very rotted and cracked, but not yet leaking (caught just in time). You may be having a similar problem. Get it fixed pronto!

For a story on one 308 NOT caught in time, go to www.tomyang.net/cars/ferrari.html and click on "ferrari stories", then click on "roasting a 308"...

Forgot to add, it is not leaking after it is filled. A friend says I might be pumping too fast and accidently opened the overflow valve. And good advice Henry.

Simple. STOP driving the car and find the source of the leak, before it's too late!!!!!!!

While filling the gas today the attendent says to me : Look! You're leaking gas. Sure enough, gasoline was coming out from inside the left wheel well. Not much but made a small puddle (about the size of your palm) on the ground. Any ideas? Has this happened to you? What should I do? Thanks in advance.
