I bought my 308 on ebay. Great transaction, great seller. He agreed the deal would be contingent on a PPI and when that had been done we renegotiated the deal to cover fixing the few items the PPI discovered. Ebay is a great way to find a car. I would never just bid blind and buy without a PPI and lengthy discussions with the seller. I honestly doubt that happens very much. As a way to advertise or locate a car, ebay is tough to beat. I love it! I have also sold cars on ebay. Sold my Jaguar that way 2 months ago, for full asking price. The buyer wanted it, I ended the auction early to make the deal. He flew in, had it inspected and drove it home. |

I bought my Ferrari on Ebay. I ran a Carfax before I bid and then thoroughly checked the car out (it was garaged 15 miles from my house) before I paid a dime. I would be reluctant to buy any car without inspecting and driving it. What makes the Ferrari Market Letter or any other advertising medium superior in that regard? |

I waited until the auction was ended and the seller didn't have a winning bid. Then I contacted him and started the buying process-- for which Ebay auctions don't allow enough time. |

I sold my previous 328 on ebay... During the auction, I faxed all the paperwork to the (eventual) buyer and gave him my mechanics #. The buyer flew in to inspect the car after the auction and then had Horseless Carriage transport it back to his house.

I have bought a couple- great experince with both. One, I closed the deal off line and the second I dropped a big bid in with 7 seconds left in the auction. But four other times cars were not as expected. So my experience is about 1 in 3 ferrari's on ebay are decent cars. The way I do it is to fly to inspect the car and the deal is off if it is not what I expect (i.e. car was misrepresented). A $300 plane ticket is best insurance against a problem. Also if you pay deposits via paypal with a credit car you have both recourse with paypal's buyer assurance as well as with your cc company. Am Ex is the best. Then your only risk is the cost of the plane ticket and the paypal insurance on the deposit. Bill |

seriously, if you find a car on ebay you "think" you would buy then bid or call the owner and work a deal offline, but DO NOT just bid and hope you win and the car shows up in pristine condition. Most of the reputable dealers on ebay will be happy to sell to you offline and accomodate your requests. If not then WALK AWAY. Don't let your emotions for a good deal cloud your judgement. |

Doody gives good advice, Ebay is good to find the car you want and then check the car out at the dealer or person selling it and go from there.I wouldn't sugest buying anything sight unseen. Check the car out before the auction ends and make the deal if you want it and they will usually cancell the auction. |

Bought mine on EB...overall it was an positive experience, but not really all that different than if I had seen it advertised somewhere else. It's a great advertising source, I often search EB's offerings - looking for the perfect 355. But once you find something you like, treat it just like you would any other kind of purchase, regarding proper research and inspections. As far as waiting 10 secs and outbidding the winning bid, why would you want to do that? Why not just be the highest bidder? Plus, if a seller is willing to accept a "late" offer over the winning bid, then he's not someone you want to buy a used car from. |

you should search the archives - lots of discussion on this topic. the quick of it is that people use ebay as a marketing tool more often than as a sales tool. if you find a car you like, explore it as if it were not on ebay and do a deal outside of the auction. that's the easiest solution. caveat emptor - lots of dogmeat on ebay. i bought my 996TT on ebay, but it was a new car still in transit to the authorized porsche dealer, so it was risk free. i looked at a few 355s that were listed on ebay, but they were uniformly problematic or undesirable cars (my experience, YMMV). didn't even consider ebay for my 550. doody. |

There are lots of great prices by sellers on ebay (and some silly ones, too), but I have never made a purchase on ebay. What are your experiences with it? Can one simply wait for 10 seconds for the auction to be over and then bid $500 over the next guy to clinch the buy? Should I avoid ebay cars? |
