a funny story and some very funny pictures. Scott, at least your friend didn't freak out when the bird hit the windshield.

I would be suprised if it was a deer placenta (not that is really matters), most of the fawns in North america were born at least a month or two ago - if not more, - maybe it was the inners of a dead deer, either way no fun for the f-car :-)

Hit a bird about a month ago in mid flight. Guess it underestimated the speed of the car. Fortunately the front grill took the brunt, yet feathers were all over and flying into the car... right on my date for that night.

She was a good sport... about 30-ish and lots of fun to be with. Took a bit to get out all those darn feathers from the car! Felt bad as i have an exotic parrot named Billie (Holiday) at home... See photo below of Billie.

Enjoy the Drive,

We saw a lot of deer grazing next to the freeway during a night run while on the Players Run. Some lady had hit a deer and, I believe a 550, picked up some debris.

I can't even imagine what would have happened if we would have hit one of those at the speed that we were traveling that night.

I have the story to end all stories, but I'll warn you that it is pretty disturbing.

A couple years ago, Lane and I were driving in her Reatta on the interstate past a work site where they were blasting rock to widen the roadway.

As we pass by, we hear and feel an explosion. Quickly we are pelted by small rocks, and then I see something large coming straight down at us from the sky. We were still going fairly fast, and it hit the roof and back window of the car.

Everybody on the interstate stopped. Several cars had blow out windows from the blast and there was debris everywhere. Apparently one of the drills had accidently drilled into another hole in the rock face and set off some dynamite.

We then found out that what had hit our car was a body of one of the workers (we saw it laying in the road - fortunately pretty far back on the road so we didn't have see it up close).

I was driving back from a motocross national race in colorado doing about 90 at the time. I saw a flock of crows feasting on some road kill. I managed to catch one of them with the passenger side mirror. The mirrow folded in shattering the passenger door window showering my friend who was asleep on the back seat at the time with glass pellets. Needless to say any time i see large birds near the road i back it off now.

That's pretty disgusting... Here's something similar that happened to my sister. She was driving to work on a nice summer morning with her window open. There is a field with some pheasant in it along the road. One of them takes off and flies right into her window. It hit the top of the door frame first and then landed in her lap while she was driving. It then rolled down by her feet and just died. Somehow she kept her calm and was able to pull over and dump the thing out without having an accident. What a mess!!

They always say 'reality is stranger than fiction' and in your case that is certainly true. Good luck cleaning up the mess.

My friend had his digital camera with him--but not the cable to download the images. I may post them next week (not to be viewed before dinner).

It's happened to me, on a bus in India. We saw it take-off lazily and try to angle across the front of the bus, which was doing about 50 mph. It blocked out the sun as it came in front, the driver braked but there was an almighty crash, and we saw it fly off to the side. The bus kept going. Thankfully, the huge windshield did not shatter, because I am sure it wasn't safety glass!

Here's some pics. Check out how narrow a typical "highway" is -- the convention is for smaller cars to pull over if there's no room. There is no median or shoulder...

So, my friends are up from Los Angeles for the weekend. Yesterday, we decide to go wine tasting (northern Williamette Valley in Oregon)--he and I in the 360, the wives in the 530i as a chase vehicle/picnic carrier. I am letting him drive the 360 (his first drive in a Ferrari).

We are about an hour into the trip, having gone through some very tasty twisty bits, some 100mph plus deserted staight sections, etc. and are about 5 minutes from the first stop.

Two lane country road, no traffic. Us at about 65mph (the road was somewhat rough, with blind curves). We are approaching a pasture, and from a fencepost a vulture takes off. The vulture proceeds to think that the best flight corridor in the whole great outdoors is down the road, directly in front of the car. My friend lifts (but doesn't brake--he'll pay for that latter) and "splat" on the front windshield of the 360. I look off to the side, and the vulture is still flying (hmmm?). My wife reports by radio from behind us that it looked like we creamed the bird, but he is flying OK, but that there are chunks of "something" on the Ferrari, including stuff dripping/flying off of it. All we can see from inside is a big chunk of bloody, membraney something on the windshield.

We decide to get to the winery, as there is no place to pull off. Well it is sunny, about 80 degrees, and my Pozzi blue paint is hot.

...the punch line--it was a deer placenta (afterbirth) that the vulture must have dropped on the car. There are chunks of placenta, blood and membranes not only on the windscreen, but on the top, on the back flanks, on the back windshield, and even dripping through the vents beside the back window into the engine compartment. And, about half of this is already baked on, and it smells--well, as bad as anything I've ever smelled in a hospital.

Thank god I don't have a spyder.

Yuck!
