The FX is a rebodied F512M. It had a sequential manual gearbox developed by Williams F1. I have a nice article on the car in one of my old issues of Forza. If anyone is interested I can try to find it and post the month/year.

Regards,
Mark

The Sultan of Brunei actually preferred all of his cars Automatic. I know this because a guy I know in England worked in Brunei for a special design team set up by Pininfarina to make cars for the Sultan. They were responsible for the 456GT Wagon and the 550 Automatic that actually used the transmission from a Mercedes.

As far as the original car on this thread goes, the interior is spectacular and the exterior (although not my fav. from a total package) has some striking styling details.

It looks like the radiator was movied to the front for the Sultan's car. Cool.

Yep the second special here was built for the Sultan of Brunei and is based on a F512M, it does however have a special F1 gearbox which was a prototype of those subsequently fitted to 355 and 360s.

I suspect this required writing a l-a-r-g-e check to Ferrari...

What is wrong with the rest of the car doing that???

I did think of that, but why does this car need one? ... and why is it directly infront of the driver?

Single seaters need them because they are too low, or their nose is. Surely this cars nose is not that low?

Oh well that probably is what it is ... but funny that it is directly in front of the driver.

I assume you are talking about the 512M with this question.

This I believe it is to help the driver judge where the nose is ... ie. when they are racing real hard up the guy's ar*e infront. It is turned this way around to ensure it does not restrict the airflow too much.

Coop,

I think that's the FX originally built for the Sultan off of one of the TR series.

I like it, especially the skid plate for the passenger, but...it looks a bit like a Venturi.

Wayne,
You have some very impressive enthusiasts....I recognised the car yesterday (it didn't look like this the last time I saw it) and emailed MHT. It is indeed their work, I'm going to see If I can get Bob or one of the guys from MHT to come on the site and tell us a little more about it. FYI, This event was its first public showing....I think they did a beautiful job.

WOW, what a beautiful car! Kinda like a cross between a GT-40 and a 360. Too bad, Ferrari didn't do this for the Enzo <sigh>.

JRV, I wasn't objecting to the cars being modified, just stating the fact that (until now) I've yet to see one that I thought looked better than stock.

James, Mr. Horne also owns 512M s/n 1002 and the influnce of the early 70s 512 cars is apparent, especially in the front end design. Compare it to this image of a 512S:

>>I'm not a big fan of cars that have been "messed with" such as the Koenig cars, etc., <<

sure back when they only made afew hundred I can see your point, somewhat, but in the Mass Production Days of 308's TR's and 355's their is nothing special or sacred about dilution or the lack of maintanance many have recieved.

I think they should be chopped up and used as cars instead of dry rotting in garages waiting for the Glory Days gone by of $100K 308's and $300K TR's...ain't never gonna happen.

TR's are $40K-$50K for a reason. Same reason 928's are $20K... 6th hand owners with Champagne Tastes and Beer Budgets.

The owner did tell me that he had designed the car himself. The pics dont really do the car justice. It is beautifully made and all that saw it were convinced that it must be a F-car prototype.

I turned some very knowledgable Ferrari enthusiasts on to this thread and have learned from them that this car is owned by Robert Horne (who possibly designed the new bodywork himself) and was reworked by Bob Houghton (of Mortimer, Houghton & Turner).

I'm not a big fan of cars that have been "messed with" such as the Koenig cars, etc., but I really like this one. Very impressive work!

The Owner told me that it took 6 years to build. The guy who did all the bodywork ( aluminium )was also at the meet and said it took 18 months to make the panels by hand. He did not have jigs and used wood/clay modelling for shapes. The engine and drivtrain are from a TR. I didn't get the owners name but he seemed well known to the FOC UK organising committee.

Wayne, here

http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/21/280372.html?1057499714

Seriously these Custom Cars might be the wave of the future as prices lanquish in the basement of the high production number models. I know I would never consider a plain TR but this handbuilt definately caught my attention.

Wrecked Porsche Turbos have been recieving "face lifts" for many many years and the market approved by raising the value of the slope noses and custom jobs.

whoa Wayne, where'd ya go?..;-)

Question answered in the other thread, based on a TR.

Good idea.

Stock Ferraris (ie:worn out or dry rotted) will likely be losing favor in the future.
