I would offer $85k and be willing to pass or pay even LESS if they balk.

Lou,
I think you are "dead on" here!
What ever happened to your Testarossa? Talking about not being comfortable...

I know you enjoy the track and use the car for its intended purpose but the Spider is certainly not as much fun out there as a purpose track car would be.

Heck since I am driving the 355B street and the 355CH the CH is a complete different animal. There is just no comparison.

Maybe it would be an option to look into something that William is doing with his 512TR. Suspension, engine, rollcage, tires, swaybars.

Martin thanks for the info. I am toying with the idea of a track car with a roll cage for safty reasons. Feel just a bit exposed doing 150 down the back straight at Sebring or Pocono in a 360 Spider.

Lou,
since you are summer wise on the left coast of Florida and your closest dealer is FoCF I would think about this twice. Luciano is not going to be able to help you much on that car, neither is Paul.
A 348/355 may be more in order but is a tighter fit. You may be able to work around the roll cage a little and get a seat made for you to really get your comfortable in the car.

The 360 is an overall more roomy car. Solly is a tall guy and needed the extra legroom but you don't and car work around the comfort level on the 355 as well.

BTW Solly,
you may have fit into a 355CH as well with some mods to the rear roll cage cross members and getting the seat all the way back. It is definately another 7 inches to move back.

You American 360 Challenge owners are getting SERIOUSLY ripped off by the FNA dealer network. $12-$15K US for a 360 clutch!!! I just had the clutch in my 360 replaced for $4800 AUSTRALIAN dollars ($3200 US). This included the clutch, all bearings and seals (all factory parts) AND labour.
The labour rate is $120 Australian at the authorised dealer ($79 US). Local "specialists" charge a little over half the dealer rate.

Bought my 360 Challenge 2 months ago, and was assured by Shelton it was in pristine condition, and had been driven by a chalenge guy who never pushed it. Paid $120,000 for what was supposed to be a "pristine" Challenge car-no body damage, no frame damage, rebuilt motor with some extra goodies with 2 hours on it. Loved it my first event-trouble free and a blast.

Race 2: Need new set of rims and tires "just in case" $7,000. i ended up really needing 2 of them. Rims cracked.

Race 3: Needs new clutch (50% wear)-not detected by Shelton. approx $12,000-$15,000

Race 4: Needs new alternator. cost unknown yet.

Support at each track (you need this with a 360 Challenge-you can't buy the Ferrari diagnostic computer anywhere, and can't repair anything without it) $300 per day. Transport to track (car not street legal) $275 each way.

These cars are fun, but unbelievably expensive to maintain and service, and you can't do any work yourself. I'm now having a lot of 2nd thoughts about this and may go in for a simpler purpose-built track car.

At 105k you've got to be looking at some major issues with the car. It's too cheap. Probably needs mucho work, all of it expensive.

Can't speak for the market at large, seems like a Florida dealer recently had one on eBay for 115. I think it's all about condition - mine had about 1000 miles on it, no damage, very clean. You really need an authorized dealer to hook up the black box and tell you things like how much clutch life is left. If you want to e-mail me privately, I'll be happy to tell you how much I paid for mine in January (more than 105!) and how much the "go through" service cost.

The critical question is: why do you want it? It will be expensive to operate, but then, so are many other race cars. I think it is a fabulous car for certain purposes.

Hugh: It has a 3 hr new motor as stated.

Jon: Can't make LRP this weekend. Just did Pocono and will be at LRP in Aug and the Glen in Sept. Thats plenty this summer for an old guy like me after Sebring and a few Moroso's doing the winter.

At 105k it's a great deal, given that the challenge class will be around for the next 3, 4 years.

FWIW, I know of a 360 Challenge that suffered a minor engine bay fire but then completely rebuilt AT THE FACTORY. New motor, etc. All documented. The car is like new. A friend is selling it, asking $130k, with some spares (I think).

vty,

Hubert,

Actually an entire 360 crate motor is closer to 40K than 20K. In addition to what you added the 360 C is also very complex with all it's electronic systems.

The only ones who can diagnose problems are the dealers. A friend of mine bought a 360 C last year right before the Glen Labor day event. He has since done about 4 or 5 events. It was only at the last event that the car ran right.

Will h. on this board and Solly just bought theirs so they would be the people to talk with.

When the car runs right it's damn fast but this is not a car you can work on by yourself.

105K is the lowest I have seen but with two seasons on the car I gather it has been put into the wall with great frequency. Which car is it (dealer or Challenge driver)? I might know it.

Lou, you coming to Lime Rock this weekend or the Glen in August?

Regards,

Thanks, Jim. I just got back from a "short" drive. I worked at home today, starting at about 8am. By 2:30 i was hungry, so i cranked 'er up and drove across the county to a hot dog stand named "walter's" in mamaroneck. (They have their own website; been there since 1919; the building is an old chinese pagoda; some of the best dogs on the planet). Anyway, took the scenic route home, maybe about a 75 mile trip. Driving this car just gets better and better; soon expecting Ruf exhaust and other tweaks. Far more predictable than people have led me to believe, although when you really get on it, things happen very fast...

Can't legalize the 360c's as they didn't come with a vin, nor title. Tim Gendreau (hope I've spelled that right) almost got his registered b/c FNA fouled up and set his local dealer the title, but the dealer spilled the beans, and it never happened. From what my pea brain can remember, the 360c's all suffer from wake t-belt tensioners that like to let go --usually down a front straight-- and take the entire motor w/ them. To a tune of 20k, IIRC. I'd inisit on a 360c w/ a fresh motor (zero hours of use.)

A 360 will typically go for less than the street model. Also, many 360 C's have seen damage. If the body is straight, the engine checks out, and you want a race car. Then this might be a good deal. Remember that a 360 C will be 4 times the headache and cost of what a 348/355 C will be to operate.
