Kevin,

Love you dude and all, but here is where we differ. Guess that means no more NOS Teles or Mullards for me from you huh? Anywho, i feel 6.5-inch for front is mandatory. BIG difference and MUCH better than 5.25-inch IMHO. But this is academic...

i'd rather enjoy the sound of the car itself. Add NO weight (unless it boosts performance), take OFF as much as possible (for greater weight-to-power ratio). My Honda, on the other hand, can have as much stereo gear as she can handle. It's a Honda, who cares. But we ARE referring to a Ferrari...

Then again, unlike you my friend, LISTEN to music at home about 8+ hours a day(!). Dare i admit this in public, have an Italian Ferrari red tubed stereo system in THE GARAGE for musical pleasures when working on the car... and don't make me tell you about my bathroom stereo system.

Love ya :-)

Enjoy the Tubes,

There is no reason to not put a nice hifi in your car. I love the sound of a tubi...but...I rarely get to listen to MY music at home (which is stupid because I work in hifi).

My alpha waves get going from cool tunes in while driving.

The achilles heal of most car systems IMHO in two seaters:

Attempting to get more "space" by putting mids/tweeters behind you. Some of my best systems had speakers like the ADS 300I plates up front and a passivly crossed over woofer behind.

Properly installed all you need is the fronts. Which brings us to probelm #2

The doors on the 348 and 355 suuuuuuuck. I did not have my 355 long enough to try to evaluate it and fix it. But it did not look promising.

I suggest you go to some Ferrari meetings and see what people have done. Doing a good install on a Honda does not meen you will peg your car.

The biggest issue I had was horrid mids. It would be nice not to have it behind a really poor door panel. Having a 5.25" or 6.5" surface mounted would be better. It won't sound like a $6 transistor radio.

I have $10K worth of gear in my car. It's good. But not great. My M3 sounds better, because it has better acoustics. Only so much that you can do in a Ferrari.

But there is nothing like experience. Not in cars. Your model. Learn from others mistakes.

Jeffery,

I know what you are saying about the hearing. While my system was for sound quality I still took a hit on my hearing. Before I started to compete we were tested at work for our hearing (baseline) and after the year or so I was into it pretty heavy I took a 40% hearing loss (time to stop). Still love seeing the installs if they aren't all boom boom boom systems.

Hmmm...

Adrian... if it involves music i am "on it". Yes SE tubes at home, yet have Clarion AutoPC/GPS/WinCE head unit, Nakamichi four channel amplifier, outboard Nakamichi electronic x-over, Nakamichi separates loudspeaker with passive x-over for mids to highs, Monster Cable M850 RCAs throughout, 14 gauge loudspeaker wire, 8 gauge power wire, gold-plated power distributor, gold-plated battery posts... in my 1993 Honda Del Sol.

As for the Ferrari, about to remove the system. Never use it so may as well further raise the power-to-weight ratio :-) Have been shedding as much weight OFF the car here as possible. At this point she is about 400-450 lbs LIGHTER than US equiv 308GTS QV. Want to shed another 100 to 200 more lbs.

Pat: IASCA is a blast and loads of fun :-)

Jeff: While high SPL (volume) levels are ONE type of competition, there are many others who desire sound quality (SQ) AND NOT ULTRA LOUD system (thank goodness). Naturally i stick with the former (SQ) and not the latter (SPL).

Todd: i'd suggest a upper line Clarion CD player as Alpine are not as good as they once were UNLESS you are going to seek out a vintage Alpine head unit and get eclectic on us :-) Use a separate amplifier (Soundstream, etc), something around 60 Watt per channel (four channels with built in electronic crossover). Loudspeakers are a personal preference, though i am a fan of silk soft dome tweeters and 6.5-inch midrange. JL Audio is good for bass. Use two channels of the amplifier for upper frequency separates, use the other two electronically crossed over channels for bass. Have them mount the tweeter high on the door or on the dash. i'd PREFER bass in the front of the car, yet this is challenging. Could put the bass drivers in the door with a few mods/custom panels. They can also paint all loudspeaker grills to match the color of your interior for a more stealth/visual matching look if you desire.

Hope this helps. Of course in the end what REALLY matters is that YOU...

Enjoy the Music,

nobody said anything about a "bangin" system... I'm not into "bling" "bling"...

clean sound for me and my passenger to enjoy. It's only a 6" woofer, but adds to the fullness of the overall sound tremendously.

Steven, you've GOT to stop telling everyone you are an IASCA judge, or your cred will go out the window...expecially when you tell folks you like SE tubes!!! LOL
How's the audio biz in the States? Have you spoken with dealers?

Todd,

Was a mobile electronics installer and am an IASCA sound quality judge. While i am about to completely remove my radio as i NEVER use it, there are too many variables. Let us get down to brass taxes. Are you talking basic $1,000 setup or $3k+ or ??? What car do you have?
