Erik,
I did not get your mail. For some reason, it is not working. I do have someone interested in buying my car and he is coming back today to do a compression check on it. If he is not interested in it I will let you know. If you want me to send some pictures of the car, email me at

Unfortunately it's 30 years in california. Cars of year model 1974 and older currently exempt.

Smog is not rocket sciene, especially on an FI car. Working cat and oxygen sensor and you're most of the way home. I would take it back to the shop that worked on it and tell them to make it right. Of course you could have some valve problems (a quick compression check will tell you) but if not, it shouldn't be hard to make it pass.

Cant you just register it as an antique next year and get a waive on the emission test? Im under the impression that the time limit is 20 years..

FYI as of July 1 the "enhanced rolling test" is now SOP at all Bay Area Smog check (an test) places. It is required of all vehicles registered in the Bay Area, it was big news on July 1.

James,
I think on the top of your DMV registration notice, there should be a area right below the VIN, Make etc. with a "stop sign" It will have in BOLD letters either "SMOG Certification Required" or "SMOG TEST Only" If the latter, then you fall into the catagory that will require the enhanced rolling test available only at special smog test stations. If the former, then you can take it to any local CA test station for your typical visual and tail pipe probe test.
My guess is if only your HC output is marginally failing, then the car falls into the former catagory and you only need a technician really familiar with getting Ferraris thru this procedure. Bret at Skelton might be worth talking to.
Best of luck.

ps: Not related to Gordon. He has a very solid practice here in SF.

This smog check smog test is confusing. How does one determine wheather its a smog test or smog check.
Vincent,
I had the car for close to 4 years and the most driving I did with it was bringing it home from Midland, Texas to Chicago, Illinois.
Just to set things straight, I am NOT DOWN ON FERRARIS or even on this particular one. I am fed up with California's smog requirement. The car ran strong and was a lot of fun to drive, what chance I had to drive it. I still have my 328 so Im still a ferrari nut.

James,
If your car was issued a "Smog Test" requirement, all test and related repairs will be payed for by DMV. Just check their web site. I just had our Porsche done and the Test station informed me of this information. That is the only silver lining in this hassle. For you, this could ease the financial frustrations, but agree, it might be time to move on. Funny, I couldn't imagine wanting to get rid of a Ferrari!
If your serious about selling the car, I think several of our Bay area buddies would jump at your car. Let me know.
Best of luck.

Brian,
This is what the tech at the State run referee station told me today. Maybe this only applies to the Bay Area. I do remember hearing on the News that the smogged stations had till October to get the new equipment. The last thing the tech said to me was to make sure I come back before October because thats when they will do the dyno test.
Jordon,
The car died on the way home and I had it towed back to my house. It ran great before it died, especially after getting it back from the shop that replaced the warm up regulator and did all the adjustments. CO was measured at 92 at idle, which passed. HC was measured at 220 which failed the idle test. The high speed test passed with flying colors. Maybe these measurements would pass emissions in another state. Heard a high pitch whinning sound before it died. Will be sold as-is for around $15,000 - $17,000

If all else fail get a can of Guarantee Smog Pass from your local Pepboys. About $10.

Alcohol is a definite no no. What were you trying to do? Get the car drunk?

Brian, I understand that (here in California) there is a difference between a "Smog Check" and a "Smog Test." What you experienced was a "Test," where the drive wheels are placed on the dyno and the car is actually run in gear. Some cars are flagged by the state as "Test Only" and cannot be smogged at a standard "Smog Check" facility.

I run into this often when smogging cars for my used car lot. Specific years of certain models have been flagged and, when my Smog Check guy comes across one of these cars, there's nothing he can do with it as it must be taken to a "Test Only" facility.

How much would you sell it for? Does it drive well other than the smogging problem?

>>>For anyone living in the enhance area of California, the Dyno test doesnt start till October<<<

Interesting...had my T smogged yesterday, and it was stuck on a dyno. At a Shell gas station of all places...rolled it into place onto the dyno wheels, they put it in gear, and had it running for a few minutes.

Had my Mercedes done about 6 months ago, and this was not done (and yes, brought it to the same Shell)

Thanks Dave but it is time to move on and get rid of the car. I am not going to sink another cent into this car. I have already spent 4300 at Lake Forest Sports Car for a complete service, spent 2200 for a custom stainless steel muffler with a built in Catalytic converter and 1200 for a warm up regulator and adjustment. All that money spent and I still cant legally drive the car. So its going to be donated, sold or just sit outside and rot.

Ben,
I am serious about getting rid of it. Its time to let it go and move on. The frustration is not worth having it.
Dont know why the car died on the freeway, maybe it was the alcohol I put in it. Dont know, Dont Care.

James- I am very sorry to hear about your emmisions woes. Living in the People's Republic of California, I share your pain!

Are you in an "Enhanced area" ? (where they do a much more extensive test involving Dyno time, etc.) How does the car run, any black smoke which would indicate an overly rich condition? (esp off idle?)

Best!
Ben.

PS: If your car is seriously looking for a good home, I would love to fiddle with the motor untill it passes. I've dreamed of a 308qv about since I could walk.

Yep time to move it on ... Once you start hating a car it is time to flick it.

Obviously needs to have the engine opened, and you do not want to do that, I guess.

Somebody will buy it and then you can find another. Good luck.

I give up. I failed the test again. I tried adding 4 bottles of alcohol in with about 4 gallons of gas and it didnt work. Everything passed except the HC at idle. It read 220ppm and passing is 120ppm. The alcohol did not help at all. After getting it back from the shop, which replace all the plugs and warm up regulator, it was already reading 220 on the HC. And to make it worst, driving it back home, the damn car died on the freeway. Does anyone know if I can donate my 84 Euro 308 and get a good write off. I am through putting money into this car.
