I hear ya, Bobd. Not all low mileage Ferraris are maintenance 'nightmares'. I had several people advise me against buying the car due to the mileage. Oh well...

Marq, my situation is somewhat similar to yours. I bought my '89 328 with 13K and have put another 6K on it in the last 5 yrs. I just had the 30K maint completed... there were no other problems with the car. As a matter of fact, it's never had a problem since the day I bought it. It's been in the shop 4 times for oil changes. |

Frank, I meant 80000 miles. 550's only entered my budget because some of the 97-98 models have acquired high milage and people forget how far the marque has come in reliability. So prices drop further than they should. Fortunately they are starting to come up as the 550 appears to be a reliable daily driver. Had a look at one with 128000ks (around 80000 miles) that had pretty much run faultlessly. |

Mine had just under 54K on it when I bought it in October 2002, and it now has just over 60K. The previous owner did a marvelous job on servicing the car, and all I've really had to do is drive it and keep the preventative maintenance up. |

Bought my '88 328 'bout 2 years ago with 7K miles on it. Previous owner seems to have driven it less than 600 miles per year. Have never had a problem (knocking on wood) relating to 'low' miles. Don't think a blanket statement can be made, in all fairness, regarding low vs. higher mileage cars and inherent problems (from what I have seen). It goes both ways. Surely you'll come across both good and bad cars at either end of the mileage spectrum.

Hi Low mileage cars are not always the best. I know many Ferrari owners who have, what is known as high mileage and they have had no problem with their cars at all, becuase the cars are being used. I also know of people who's cars are very low mileage 3-6k and they have nothing but problems with then. It is sometimes best to get a car which is used on a regular basis. Thanks Steve |

Mike, Beginning with the QV's, Ferrari started using better materials in the motors, especially cylinder liners and valve guides and valves. So, quite a few QV's and 3.2 motors are running around with over 100K on the clock. Of course, they last much longer with normal, frequent drives than they will in the hands of someone who takes it for a 10 mile blast around the block each weekend. So, mileage is not a great indicator of motor health. Regardless of mileage, get the compression and leak down checked on any QV. If it checks good and good service records, even a higher mileage motor can have lots of life left in it. The rest of the car is a different matter. Any 308 is now likely to have worn supension for instance. Can be expensive. A motor, no matter how sound, can have leaks some of which are expensive to fix, etc. With proper maintenance, they can go a very long way, but expect to pay a lot to maintain and minor repairs. I bought my 86 328 2 months ago with 52,000 miles. I had no reservations at all buying a car with this "high" a mileage. I just wanted to pay a fair price. Have already put 3000 miles on it - the car runs like a top. I've had absolutely nothing go wrong with the car. Called my mechanic to schedule an oil change today and he said "Where have you been?" I told him "Nowhere, I just got a good car, that's all!!".

James. a Ferrari comes from the factory with more than 80 miles on the odometer ? Even if it didn't, that would hardly be considered high miles. Now, 80,000 mile on a 550 would be high miles in this market. |

Stephen-Nice Coupe. Good choice. At the 02 International meet in Los Angeles I met a 3.2 Coupe owner that had 110,000miles on it. A local SoCal F owner that new the Coastal roads pretty well. The car ran great! |

have a look at some of the stuff in Germany. There are a few 550's with 80+ miles on them (up and down the autobahn mind you) that have had nothing but regular servicing so I think the cars have got a lot better in that respect |

I just purchased a 1986 Ferrari Mondial 3.2 Coupe with 31,000 miles. I demanded that EVERYTHING was working on the car before I bought it as well as proof of required service with current miles. I even had the sunroof and emergency brake fixed by the seller before I took delivery. I also had it inspected including compression checks. So far, so good. I now have 32,300 on the car with no problems. My goal is to drive it. I plan to put 10,000 miles on it over the next year and then decide to upgrade or keep it. The nice thing is the 30K service was already complete. |

78 308GTS bought in late 99 with 15k Gone in mid 2001 with 34k 87 328 GTS bought in Aug 2001 with 29k Currently (July 03) 38k miles and counting... I know of a 328 locally with 103k on it. There are several 308's I have heard mentioned on the net with over 100k. Clyde over on Ferrarilist sold his 308QV with something like 114k on it, and it was still running strong. The cars are "maintanence pigs" no doubt about it. They require lot's of attention on crap that would go forever on you Honda. But man, what a blast to drive...I love it! I drive about 10k miles a year so I am dropping around $2.5k a year on maintanence and stuff that breaks...But I'm an "anal" bastard and everything has to work properly on my car for me to enjoy it. Other people can handle having a broken clock, power antenna, water leaks, or fuel gauge that acts up, NOT ME. I fix em, or get em fixed. Remember, the newest 308 QV is an 18 yo car, and stuff WILL break with great regularity. Just be prepared for that. |

Not much....I had one and it was a nightmare. Look at any 360 or 355 ith anything over 4-5K miles on it and watch the price fall. What does that say about reliability? I spent so much money on that car, that it totaly turned me off on the marque. The local mechanic said.."What do you expect, it's a Ferrari!" My 360 is better but have had some electrical issues and had the F1 tranny replaced under warranty. Oh, by the way, the car was at the dealer for 3 months. The dealer made a partial adjustment/credit on my lease but it still left a bad taste in my mouth. If my GT2 was'nt so freakin low...I would say it's been the best sports car ever for me. I'm not sure if I'll get into another F-car. |

How may miles were on your Ferrari when you bought it? I am about to buy my first, and I do not want a museum piece... it will be driven frequently. As long as it has been serviced, how may miles can I expect (with proper maintainance) out of a 308QV? |
