Re the noted valve guide problems, you'll want to stick to a 98 or 99 model year or be certain that the guides have been done on an earlier car. Seems to me it's a $10K 'bill' so be careful. As a precaution, I'd recommend that you run any car they identify for you buy Richard Capoccia - one of the techs at FoW - he'll make sure you get the right car and that it has had the necessary service.

You've probably read this already but look over the records, don't just hold them in your hand. As an example, i's not uncommon for owner's to gloss over the fact that there are two years missing. When you discover it, then you usually get a short answer to the effect that what we have is all up to date. I actually called the Ferrari dealer in St. Louis who knew my car and vouched for it (I don't think that there is a dealer in STL anymore). Mine was a one owner car and I still checked out everything. And, it turned out to be a really nice car. Most of the f-cars that I looked at (admittedly none at a Ferrari dealer) had poor and missing records.

These guys have a red exterior/black interior 355. I've seen the car a few times and it looks like it just came out of the factory. http://www.nwicars.com/exotic.htm

I was dead set on a 6speed when I went into the dealership. At this point I'm not sure what would be my preference. I think the thing to do is to try both and see which I prefer. I hope that I will have the opportunity to try both. I am primarily concerned about the reliablity of the F1 transmission. The other issue is whether I would feel in touch w/ the car if I went the F1 route.

what year are you looking for? 6speed or F1?

the FORZA buyers guide is generally informative. you can order a back issue from Ross Periodicals (search the archive).

you'll get different answers on the F1 robustness issue. personally, i stuck with a 6 speed for mine based on my research, but some folks swear by it.

I've decided to take the plunge and purchase a 355. ( I've been a Porsche 911 owner for a number of years. ) I have FOW currently looking for a car for me. I have them looking for a car w/ a black interior and either a red / black or yellow exterior. Anything to look out for w/ respect to the 355s? I've heard the two major things to be on the lookout for on these cars are cracked headers and valve guide problems. Anything else worth considering. I've heard that the F1 technology in the 355s was immature and prone to problems is this true? I'd like to add that I was very pleased w/ the treatment and service I received today. I even got to test drive the new Maserati coupe.
