"Driving Ambition: The Official Inside Story of the McLaren F1" This is a must own for any true car fan. The amount of technical detail is awesome and should be considered required reading for the car guy.

Martin, that's a 97 GTR (longtail), not an LM. The LMs are not even racecars--all 5 were built to commemorate the non-longtailed 95 GTRs' success at Le Mans.

Coop, now you know why I want a McLaren F1 LM!

Gerd Petrik is German, yes. He was into pharmaceuticals (the legal kind).

Ok, so now the car I want is a 95 F1 LM because:

the LM runs the most powerful engine of any F1, road or race, by using an 1995 GTR engine without the air restrictors. It also features the race car aerodynamics, gearbox and 18" inch wheels.
With 680 bhp and weighing some 60kg less than the F1 road car, the F1 LM is the fastest accelerating F1 of all.
As a tribute to the memory of Bruce McLaren, all the F1 LM's were painted in the same Papaya Orange that was used on his contemporary Formula One and Can Am cars.
Inside the LM, the driver sits in an all carbon fibre race seat, and the passenger seats are moulded into the moncoque. With minimal trim, the interior carbon is beautifully finished in high gloss lacquer.

Now, what did I do again with my tax return?

Very very cool. I guess I'd need a few Powerballs then.

Good to see someone enjoying their wealth that way. I know I would.

I wonder if I'm thinking of the same guy here. I live in Sarasota and I've seen this one fella tooling around in a Diablo roadster as well as an F50, a CLK-GTR, a Straman TR and a bunch of other cars. I think I'd take him if I ever won one of those Powerballs. LOL.

I was told by Harley Cluxton in Phoenix that his and he believed all had severe overheating problems in hot climates. He had to pull over and park it during a run and called the factory who told him there was nothing they could do about it: it was the nature of the beast!

Greg,

Yeah, I've heard. I was introduced to Bruce by Faisal, incidentally, during the Palo Alto Concours. Heard stories about the 959s he tinkered with along with other cars.

Taek-Ho,
According to the cover story in the Sept. '03 issue of "Excellence", Bruce Canepa has succeeded in legalizing the 959 for sale in the U.S.

Justin,
This person owned the first R Turbo Sport in the U.S. I wasn't aware there were others here yet.

I know of a 959 someone in Asia claims their cousin has in SF. Hope to stop by one of these days and take a look at it.

I think he's going through issues in legalizing the car and stuff.

Just enthusiasm bordering on obsession...oops, crossed that line ages ago!

Actually, it's funny, but my TVR gets so much attention that people seek me out. Honest. You go to enough meets and gatherings and the stories and peeople and cars all start falling into place (or apart, as the case may be)!

Justin, there's numerous Ruf cars here. Under all sorts of guises. Some registered as 1967 cars. Some as regular P-cars. Some sporting registration from Guam. Etc., etc. There's even a few of the 959 "s" variants, of which only 23 were ever made.

The ONLY Ruf R Turbo Sport in the US?

There's a guy in NorCal who owns one I thought...however, as Faisal seems to have a wrap on what supercars are owned by who, I'll let him agree or disagree! :-)

Regardless, that's one incredible garage, one I can honestly say I'm quite jealous of! I wonder who it is......

Oh, yes, sorry, I had completely forgotten about him! Don't know his name, but he has a yellow Zonda that customs is very curious about, as they have no record of it ever entering the country! He took it on a special run in Idaho and So. Dakota, last year, with a bunch of Euro-spec Lambos, Ruf P-cars, etc. They had donated enough to get a police escort!

Faisal,
You might be right, but I don't think this is Dan's car. I think this is a different color orange. The gentleman I am referring to lives in Malibu and owns a Zonda, Enzo, the ONLY Ruf R Turbo Sport in the U.S. (small article in Ampersand, "R&T", June '03) and an F40 and F50. I had heard he sold either the F40 or 50 or both when he received his Enzo. He is rumored to own many more cars than this, these are just the ones I've heard about so far.

Dan's is rumoured to have finally been sold. I suspect it's the same car, since you mentioned the orange colour. Also, Dan drives it with several different plates, the one he uses in shows is different from the one he uses on the road in Arizona.

The Don,

I know that Leno's car is all black. I have seen pics of his car. He also has MA plates on it and can frequently be found driving it on weekend mornings on/around Mulholland.

I am referring to a completely different McLaren F1. It is neither Leno's or Dan Kennedy's.

Andrew,

Bordeaux in September with a group of McLaren's?!
Add beautiful women and it doesn't get any better. I really wish I could go to that one, but even if I could I don't know what I would drive that would have a shot at keeping up! ;)

I can't even express how much I'd love to own a McLaren. Excepting old cars, it doesn't get any better than that for me.

Do you know where they'll be heading? I assume towards the South of France.

Speaking of which...anyone ever been to the Ferrari Museum near Nice and Cannes? There is a truly amazing collection of old and modern cars there all owned by one individual, including a couple of F1 cars. It is definetly worth checking out.

Or are you talking about someone else? If so, what colour is the car? Any other details you don't mind sharing?

Mike B,
This information regarding Frank Selldorff's McLaren(s) is publicly available in "Roundel". I am paraphrasing the article which can be found on pg. 34 of the November 2002 issue. He bought a '97 but couldn't get EPA approval b/c of OBD II requirements. He then bought a '94 which was brought into the country. According to the article, the '97 remains in England. However, the article doesn't clarify whether or not he retains ownership of the car in England.

There is also a gentleman in SoCal who owns one. And I'm not referring to Jay Leno...

Faisal,

Thanks for the offer of help - I would love to be in a position to buy this sort of car, but I would be really REALLY stretching every aspect of my finances to afford it :-) I'd be looking for pennies to buy gas :-) Maybe in a year or two I will have the means to buy one. I think the price may be more by then though. Thanks for the insight, however. I had no idea the one in AZ had the racing time it did... I will certainly seek out your advice if and when I am in the market.

As for the owners, I'd be curious as to who owns them worldwide... only because I find it interesting who owns various high-dollar cars. I love hearing the guys name and thinking "wow I never knew he was a car nut!". I wouldn't want to step on anyones privacy but for any freely available info, I love hearing who owns what.

The coolest one I have seen is at Oakfields. It's a GTR converted to full LM spec. Sweet car. However, it is only for the very committed. The previous owner traded it in because it was too loud!!!

I just love this car. It's chassis no. 07 as well, a true Bond car. Speaking of Bond, there's quite a few nice British cars for him to be in again. Thank god the BMW era is over.

Are you asking my opinion on the price or on the car?

It's a GTR. Not comfortable to drive by any stretch of the imagination. Too loud, and too harsh a ride. It's also been raced, so I would look at the maintenance records very closely. If it's been rebuilt since the last season, it's probably in decent kit. If not, ten foot pole and do not touch come to mind.

Great for a track toy, though. As such, however, it is priced very optimistically. But I am sure they are negotiable.

You know Mike, in my book, compliments get you very far!!! Thanks.

Who else owns these amazing cars?
Worldwide or in the US? There's some privacy concerns...and I don't know all of the current owners as I stopped keeping track a few months ago. Herb Chambers is a case in point. I didn't know he had sold his until you mentioned it.

I would love to get one someday, but I wonder what the real cost of ownership is and what the maintenance would be. I HOPE they would hold their value, but who knows.
They will hold their value. No doubt. Their Le Mans success, numerous records, very limited production, exotic nature, etc. all guarantee their appreciation. There's so much that's special about this car that it's impossible to ever get it all down in writing.

Unless you buy an F1 for top dollar, beat the crap out of it, don't maintain it, and try to flip it quickly, you won't lose money on it.

Maintenance is not too bad at all. Unless you need something major. Then it's bad. If you buy a car with good service history, you should be ok. McLaren is very responsive, and there's 2 service facilites in the US. Plus, McLaren factory will walk you through stuff, or send out a factory tech. If you are an enthusiast like me, they are amenable to giving owners some training. So there's plenty of resources, but if it's not a regular item, it can be expensive. Don't buy one if you are stretching yourself.

What was the guy in AZ asking for his?
1.5 million which is plain silly. It's not worth it IMO. And at that price point, he's excluded every broker in the business. Not too smart.

I have heard the going price is about $1.2MM in the USA, various things considered.
Closer to $1.35 million when all is said and done. Don't forget the significant expenses of EPA certification, which is still required even when a car is approved for Show and Display, as the McLaren is.

If you are truly interested, I know the right people--email me privately and I will put you in touch.

Faisal,

I bought a Viper a while back and was checking Herb Chambers Dodge. I've bought a few cars there and I was dealing with his son (who was the general manager of the Dodge dealer). I asked about his fathers F1 and he told me that the car had been sold several months prior, and that his father liked the car, but just felt it was too much money tied up in a vehicle, especially since he could get more than he had paid for it :-)

I didn't know Seldorff had two! In Boston no less... amazing.

Who else owns these amazing cars? I would love to get one someday, but I wonder what the real cost of ownership is and what the maintenance would be. I HOPE they would hold their value, but who knows.

What was the guy in AZ asking for his? I have heard the going price is about $1.2MM in the USA, various things considered. What is AZ-boy asking... like $2MM or something?

P.S. Faisal, I enjoy your posts! Loved the McLaren pics and your insight into various things!

Yes, I am pretty sure it was him, as I don't know of any other person in Florida who has two.

There's several individuals worldwide, though, who have more than one:
- Sultan of Bruneii is rumoured to have seven(!)
- A Mr. Meissner in Sweden has at least 3
- Frank Selldorff in MA has at least 2
- Ralph Lauren in NY has 2
- Ron Dennis in the UK supposedly has 4 now that he's sold one to Nick Mason (ex Pink Floyd drummer and huge car enthusiast).

I can't remember any more off the top of my head.

Also, don't know if it counts, but BMW owns 1 each of the longtail and regular GTRs.

Jay Leno owns one and exercises it regularly. He's got a nice collection...80+ cars. And he uses them all. What a guy.

Rowan Atkinson (well know British comic--Mr. Bean, star of Johnny English, currently playing) is a great driver, and stretches his McLaren's legs very often. There's numerous sightings of him--he's the subject of many high-speed tales. His car is a very distinct plum (violet) colour. He rear ended some subcompact once, but his car's mangled front end was repaired quickly. He has a few other special cars as well.

I was overtaken by a McLaren when I was doing a good 150mph in France. I saw a car approaching and mashed the pedal to the floor, but it kept closing at a good clip. I was concentrating so hard to make sure I was safe and he had room to overtake that I felt it overtake, rather than see much detail. I was doing about 165mph by the time I realized I had been well and truly overtaken, and when I slowed down to a speed where I could look around, it had disappeared into the distance. The sound was incredible. Deep, melodious bass tone, not a wail like a tubi'd Ferrari would give. When I got to the ferries in Calais, it was nowhere to be seen but there was plenty of other exotica there as it was the day after Le Mans!

I have seen a few others on the road, in the US and in England, but none of them were doing anything remotely exciting. I did see the GTRs racing at Laguna in 1997, which was pretty special, but the Porsche GT1s and the CLK-GTRs were just as special in that context.

Patrick,
yes. He had a 360 Challenge car in a unique orange colour. The bodywork had a lot of damage in the first challenge race this year. Funnily enough, I saw a challenge car in that colour advertised in some magazine recently. What are the odds that it's the same car being dumped? Funny how small a world it has become.

Mike,
I know most of the owners/cars in the US. There's at least 17 roadcars and 3 GTRs. I am reluctant to post all the owner info in a public forum, but I can answer the points you raised:

1) A guy in TX??? This was the car that was on the R&T test cover. A friend of mine who lives in Midland, TX knows the owner, so I think the owner is in the west part of TX
The car in Midland, TX belongs to a doctor. He drives it regularly.

2) Ralph Lauren owns 2 (or owned) - what is the status of these cars?
Still owns them both.

3) Gerd owned one that is apparently now owned by a guy in CA according to Faisal's post.
Gerd owned two, and surprisingly, is rumoured to have sold both. One was sold to the owner of the Mont Tramblant circuit in Canada, an ex-Tommy Hilfiger executive named Lawrence Stroll, who is a huge car enthusiast and collector. The other was sold to Elon Musk. This one has been crashed once, and was repaired at McLaren HQ before being shipped back. The fact that it's still in Florida and given Gerd Petrik's passion for these cars, I think he still has some ownership interest in this car.

4) Herb Chambers (owner of a string of car dealers in New England) owned one, but I have been told he sold the car.
So far as I know, he still owns it.

5) Larry Elison of Oracle is said to own one.
Yes, he has one. It's kept in California, at his airplane hangar. This one has also been crashed, and it was repaired in Germany and shipped back.

6) The guy in AZ who has the orange one - mclarenforsale.com I think.
He is a sales/marketing consultant.
That one has been seen a lot. It was also on a recent Road and Track cover. I have heard rumours that it was sold, but I am not sure. When I spoke to Dan Kennedy, the owner, about it, he wanted silly money for it, even by McLaren standards. I have seen firsthand some of the abuse meted out to it at the hands of journalists, etc. Let's just say it's a well-worn example.

The yellow McLaren F1 at the Wide World of Cars tech session was (I was told) owned by a huge banker for Morgan Stanley (?) who just recently retired with 20+ million. Chances are I'm getting the company name wrong but yeah, its a banker in the area NY/NJ area, mid 50's. Anyone?

Last I heard Herb Chambers had sold his F1. I wonder who owns these cars in the USA?

The owners I know of

1) A guy in TX??? This was the car that was on the R&T test cover. A friend of mine who lives in Midland, TX knows the owner, so I think the owner is in the west part of TX

2) Ralph Lauren owns 2 (or owned) - what is the status of these cars?

3) Gerd owned one that is apparently now owned by a guy in CA according to Faisal's post

4) Herb Chambers (owner of a string of car dealers in New England) owned one, but I have been told he sold the car

5) Larry Elison of Oracle is said to own one

6) The guy in AZ who has the orange one - mclarenforsale.com I think. He is a sales/marketing consultant

I had heard there were only 6 or 9 in the USA - so who owns them? I know there are some owners I'm forgetting.

I've also heard the Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) owns 2 (or had 2 different F1's). I also heard he wrecked one or both

Who else owns these fine cars?

Neal, thank you very much, sweet pictures!

I've only seen one McLaren F1 and it was in yellow, a very unflattering color for the car. Much better in silver.

Re: F1. I was at the ALMS races in Monterey a couple years back, and got up close and personal with an F1 prototype; xp4. I 've got a few pics, but they're too large to post, so, here's the link:

Neal, yes, please post. Many thanks. I believe the car belongs to an Elon Musk, a California-based dotcom entrepreneur. If so, it was sold to him by the wealthy collector Gerd Petrik, who also has a CLK-GTR, a Bugatt EB110, Euro-spec G50, etc., etc. If your pictures have a license plate number or chassis number, I can confirm.
Rgds,
Faisal.

I saw the McLaren at Shelton. Kind of neat that the display explains how there have been 5 production runs of the F1 and each batch is unique ( GT, GTS,... and so on) sorry I don't remember how all years are named. Some prodution years they made as few as 3 cars. Some years they made 30 or more cars?

What is total number of F1's ?

Seats are so narrow, you'd have to be thin or small to fit in the deep bucket seats.

I saw and have pics of that McLaren F1 at Shelton, It is not the owner of the dealers, its a guy that has to much money then he knows what to do with so instead of keeping it in a garage they are keeping it on display. At least that what the dealer told me.

OFF TOPIC, please.

i believe Herb Chambers up in the Northeast owns one and i've seen it at his dealerships now and then (not recently) on display as a marketing gimmick.

I came to this forum and signed up just so I could inform those who care that there is a McLaren at Shelton Ferrari in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. A stand next to the car displays a paper that has a brief history of McLaren and states that this car is not for sale. My friend had a camera and got some pics, but, unfortunately, they are not digital. Does anyone know anything about this particular car? My guess is it belongs to the dealership owner, who is using it to get more attention to the showroom. Oh yea, and I think there is an F40 in the middle of the showroom, but I honestly couldn't tell.
