Scott I also live in Colorado and recently purchased an 86 328 GTS. It was last sold by Motorcars Intl to a gentleman in Indiana. He then brought it to Denver and I bought it from a local dealer. My 328 has 30k miles on it, has all original tools & docs, and is in excellent overall condition. They asked $49,900 for it, and I ended up negotiating it to $44,750. So I completely agree with Rob's assessment of the price range. As others have pointed out, you *must* have an independent mechanic inspect the car. If you feel comfortable enough based on the pix and second hand service history, you could have them ship the car to Colorado. You can make your deal contingent upon third party inspection, and have it done when it gets here. I had Concours Motors in Colorado Springs do mine, they did it for $173 on 2 days notice. Very helpful. If anything pops up, you can back out of the deal or renegotiate the selling price accordingly. If you need any help with local resources or even a hand with the inspection or anything I would be glad to help out. Just let me know. |

Non-ABS 328's with around 40k miles are going for around $45-48k in most areas if a documented history, tools, and perfect service history (make sure the belts have been done). Being from MO, I would check the Dallas Classifieds and there's a new Ferrari dealer around K.C.. I think they may be located in Bonner Springs. As mentioned, I would have an expert check the car over. I paid Norwoods here in Dallas $100 and they spent a couple hours looking the car over in detail. |

My opinion FWIW..... The best way to find out what a car is worth is to do the research using: http://listings.ebaymotors.com/aw/listings/list/category6605/index.html (You may not buy your car here but it's good reference material! Since the auctions never give you enough time to buy the car right, you can contact owners after the auction to see if they still want to sell) -AND- http://www.classifieds2000.com/cgi-cls/display.exe?partner=Excite&path=Auto~Car~Search and www.Ferrarimarketletter.com as William said. It took me about six months to find my 1986 328GTS. I found it thru E-Bay by contacting the owner when the car didn't sell. As William said... Have the car checked out and have them fax you all the records and check them out. Call the dealers and service places --- they will help you trace the history so you can track the mileage and repairs. Carfax can help too but personal contact with dealers and service places is best. I bought mine sight unseen, delivered to my door. I used escrow.com to allow me time to personally inspect the car and to be sure it was represented accurately without putting all my money at risk. My buying experience says that cars from Ferrari dealers have higher list prices with other dealers and private parties being lower. I'm not sure about dealing/haggling but I saw lots of 328s come and go quickly so you may have to make a quick move. Good luck!! You will enjoy the car. |

I would subscribe to the Ferrari Market letter, they have a website & r the best source for info on trading ferraris. Also check out the NY & LA Times which r often full of ferraris for sale. I bought my Countach from Motorcars Int'l & I basically had to restore the car which looked good cosmetically, I have the bills to prove it, my mechanic said it seemed to have a lot more miles on it than the odometer said. So I'd be very careful. With any car you have to get a mechanic u trust inspect it for u. If u know a mechanic in your area ask him if he can refer u to a shop in MO or call around MO, maybe the local authorized ferrari dealer is nearby. i would have an independent mechanic go over the car Very carefully. I'm not saying all their cars r lemons but although I love my Lambo I could have bout 2 1/2 Countaches for the price of this 1 plus the restoration. Also with any car dealer, if they say the car comes with all tools, & records & they will provide free shipping, do yourself a favor & get that in writing, signed & dated on their letterhead Ive got more stories I can tell u about other dealerships where I bought other cars |

I'm looking at Purchasing my first Ferrari and am looking at a 1987 328 GTS. 1. How do you find out what the car is actually worth compared to what they are asking which is $49,500 with 37k miles. I've looked at a lot of the ads in Hemmings, etc. and this seems to be in the top end of the price range of this car. Do I have room to deal? 2. The company I'm working with is motorcars international and they have sent me about 20 pictures of the car. It looks incredible and they seem very knowledgable and helpful. ARe they are good dealership to work with? They have offered references as well from prior customers. 3. I am in Colorado and they are in MO. They've said a lot of their customers purchase without looking at the car other than pictures. If the car is delivered and it is not what they represented you have the option of refusing it. Is this a common practice in purchasing an exotic car? |
