I'm not a fan of it, makes a nice sports car look like it has buck teeth.

fudging up a new, smaller plate would break some sort of document altering law(s) in Texas. I asked DPS several yrs ago about this, they said, original plate on front bumper area of car, and that's it. No window display, nada, just original plate on front bumper area.

OTOH, have never been snagged for this in TX, so am inclined to go along with 'do it, pay a few $$'. Dunno, but would guess this doesn't go against insurance type tickets, so just $$ out of pocket.

Jurys still out whether it constitutes breaking the law (altering government issued documents), but Its a matter of the constable understanding of a law which is more complex than visually seeing the lack of a front plate.

Take a really good picture of your front plate and e-mail it over. I will shrink and have Ruth burn a copy scale. If you do it in the next couple of days, Ill have it ready for Cascade days with Velcro.

Best

Mine is under the front seat. Maybe I'll fit it with some Velcro for those special occasions.
I just installed a 70's vintage license plate from Belgium on the front. Wonder if they'll notice

Got pulled over last year driving a friend's new Vette, and WASP (Washington State Patrol) noticed the absent front plate. It was either a citation for speeding and no front plate or put on the plate and avoid both violations. Luckily, the plate was in the trunk. I've heard that you can just keep the plate under the front seat and place it on the dashboard when needed.

My 308 looks so natural without the plate maybe they don't notice.

4500 miles on the Lotus with no front plate and haven't been stopped yet. My local cops have seen the car a lot and don't say anything; on the highway so far maybe I've just been lucky, but in IL they don't seem to care that much. I see lots and lots of cars (Vettes in particular) with no front plates.

I like this Sam I am. What's involved with scanning a license plate?

I like John Hallers idea. I've seen it and actually looks quite convincing. Now if I could just get him to concoct one for me! Hearing that John?:-)

Be really careful. The penalty for no front license plate in SF is now $235. And it is not a fix-it ticket.

Dale, don't do it!!! My Ferrari, Porsche and Mercedes don't have front license plates. Although my wife got a ticket while parked at a meter in San Francisco for not having a front license plate. One good thing, she had money in the meter. Just pay the fee.

I don't even like front plates on my cheap-o Fiats, much less something as beautiful as a 550. I keep mine in the trunk and intend to pretend that I am going to pick up bolts to attach it that very day. So far I haven't even gotten pulled over which is amazing in this town. (I once let my brother take a '64 1500 cabriolet from my place in Pacifica to the same central valley town I now live in and he didn't even make it to his house through town without getting pulled over because the license plate lights were out - probably had been since about 1970, ha! One day when I was down here I had to break out the dremmel to derust the inside of the fixtures and clean the terminals, but I got them working).

Hmmmmm, can not begin to count how many times i have been pulled over. This AM was the most recent Imperial Entanglement. NO ONE ever noticed the lack of front plate, but they sure like the engine and sound of the car. Go figure.

Humor: Maybe it is the fresh donuts and coffee i ALWAYS keep onboard?

Enjoy the Drive,

Eli, perhaps...perhaps cops here in Texas are more laid back...or perhaps it is the carry permit I display with my driver's license that makes them take it easy.

Again, not that it has ever happened to me....

about the japanese cars thing, it doesn't work, especially in hawaii. i've been pulled over many a time for not displaying a front plate. there have been a few times where they didn't except my plate sticking in the front window. the same went for my friend's camaro.

but for my dad's Z06 and his M5 they don't seem to be so uptight about him not displaying his front plates.

Ralph,

It should work with Japanese cars.

If you ever get pulled over in a Toyota Corolla or Nissan Sentra, just thell the cops what Paul says!

>>Simply tell the police officer that it ruins the look of the car.<<

DISCLAIMER: That was a bad joke.

Does that trick work with Japanese cars
also ? I suppose you could also show
where you "tried" to super glue the
broken parts. It broke again and I
just repainted the whole front bumper.

Same situation in Washington, need a front plate. Too ugly and cant see drilling holes in the front bumper, so I scanned the plate on a color scanner and in Photoshop shrunk to 70% of original, took the new plate to Kinkos and had them laminate, purchased Velcro and stuck on front bumper. Looks good (smaller) and can be removed if needed. Also harder to shot with laser (its paper not reflective aluminum).

Great idea Dave. Actually, Plan A was to say, "Say whut! You mean the damn thing fell off again!"

But what I'm thinking about is a preemptive first strike to prevent from getting pulled. You see, the other day I was running behind and was trying to catch up with the Lambo run when a trooper saw me. That son-of-a-gun played cat and mouse for about a half hour (After riding my ass with his radar going non-stop, he would pass me, zoom ahead, and then try to hide further up the road.) I finally had to pull off and park to get him to move on. Fortunately, he didn't notice that my expired registeration sticker or lack of a front plate. Well, I got the sticker fixed. Now I just need to do something about the plate. I was thinking of maybe using some baling wire so that it would drag on the ground. Or maybe I could go upscale and use duct tape. Or maybe I could just come up with a story such as, "You see, officer, Chevy been thinkin bout bring the Camaro back and dis here is an experi-a-mental state trooper model that was made down in Mexico. So if you don't mind, I kinda need to keep this on the QT, but if you would want to take a spin...."

Make up a back order form on your graphics program, toss in a Ferrari letterhead and you're set.

Dale, keep the plate in your trunk. If stopped, tell them it is there, and that your factiry plate holder broke (feeble Italian parts!!) and thet its replcaement is on backorder from Italy.

Works every time. Not that I'd know or anything...

I don't wanna do it, but... I hate giving the revenue enhancers a free shot at me. So does anybody know of a company that makes a front plate holder for a 550? Ah, man, I'm gonna hate this, but what's a poor boy to do?

Dale
