Eugene,

if I remember correctly the speedlimit in Italy is 130Km/h throughout! It may not be posted yet that is what it is. Nobody cares though. Just stay with traffic and you can cruise at 200Km/h

speed limits in italy

from one of our funky ferrari owner members, who drives regularly in italy and is an italian himself, we got a warning for the police being very active in speed and traffic controls during this summer. they are especially looking for tourists with foreign plates. the reason is they had too many casualties the last months.

Oh, btw, if you have time, be sure and drive the almafi coast. This is truly the most beautiful area of Italy. You can't drive fast, but the view along the coast is outstanding. Don't believe what you read in the guide books about the dangers. Just be alert. Drive the Almafi coast if you are in the area (south of Rome).

I drove from Venice to Florence to Pisa to Rome. And if I remember correctly there are certain areas on the autostrada that had no speed limit. The average speed in the fast lane was about 100 mph. Many cars, including myself, were doing 110-130 mph in the fast lane without worries of getting pulled over.

happy motoring!!

ahhh Italian girls - definitely the best... If I had to choose which country, based on looks, a girl was from... It would definitely be Italy. When I was there, I saw sooo many beautiful women.

Keep an eye out for the hot gals.
What a sight seeing a hottie pumping
gas with the mini-skirt above the
knee in her Fiat during the middle
of the day. They dress like they
are going to a club "all the time."
It is normal to dress that way for
work.

Montana Ristaurante is a must! Mondays closed.

plan at least the full day in Maranello. Gallaria was a little disappointing. Still a must. The track is awesome. USe the Forza article as a reference.

Shop for models if you go into the stores. See all stores and compare price. They vary greatly. the shop in the town center is the least expensive from what I have seen.
Poster sizes are non-US sizes. They do not fit 36x24.

No cameras. Sorry.

Don't wear your flashy Ferrari shirts. Business casual is the right attire.

Sights in the area. Plenty. Do not fall for the 2 day Florenze tour. We did Florenze in 4 hours (not going into the churches).Try to find a hotel outside of Florenze. It is very expensive and does not offer much.

Pisa is nice nut really except the tower nothing to see. Is about 1 1/2 h from Florenze on Autostrada. Park in the side streets about a block away for free!
Bologna is very nice, so is Parma, which you rarely find in travel guides. There is a very pretty casle just outside of Parma (forgot the name) well worth seeing. A cross between french casle and italian renessance (sp?).
Modena itself has a nice city center. Ferrari of Modena is hard to find but has excellent prices for parts. They do speak english!
If you have enough time drive the coastal streets along the sea. Very nice places to see and stay a night!

have fun!

Vernon

in answer to your question, yes they do have speed limits and do enforce them as I found out last year in the 355. I didn't hear anything for 10 months then a recorded letter through my postbox with a demand for 150 euros. Unfortunately they (as in the Uk) use Gatso cameras.

I wouldn't hold out much hope of them not taking your licence as it is certainly commomplace in France for them to take it away (not sure about Italy) although it's pretty easy in the UK to get another issued.

They do, if they get to stop you, charge fines on the spot and again a well reported incident of a 250GTO being stopped a few years ago and fined over 250 for not displaying a GB plate!

Who said ALL italians love Ferraris!

btw...Will you not need an International Licence for your trip?

You are in for treat! I just returned from Italy 2 weeks ago had a great time. The 8 cylinder line was at about 25% Stradale's when I went through and the Enzo's were great to see also.

It's great that you going to have a 360 for a rental the road were all in great shape and I didn't see many police on the Autostrada. The experience driving was great for me. The fast guys get the left lane always. Every time I return to the states I hate driving here. City driving can become stressful, so stay away from Milan if you can help it. Bologna's not nearly as bad for driving. The back roads above Maranello are very curvy and can be taken all the way to Pisa if you disire. It can become a little intense after an hour or so though.

All the Autostrada's are toll and you get a ticket when getting on and pay as you exit. There are lanes for credit card payment (the CB line) if you don't have the euros with you. I put about 3,000km on our rental when there, drive like you own the road and you will be fine.

Have a great time!

I hear Italians don't target their own so throw a current newspaper in plain site in the car and make sure the car doesn't scream rental car.

Vernon,

Small world... I am also scheduled for the factory tour on the 28'th (at 10 am). We leave SF on Saturday afternoon, so I will be the one who looks half asleep on the tour !

Renting a 360 would be awesome. I need a four seat car with some room for my wife, kids and luggage. I could not find anything for rent with more than 160 HP. Also could not find a car with a GPS/Nav system. Where did you rent your car ?

there ARE indeed speed limits in Italy, I saw plenty of poliziotti standing around autostrada's and other streets with their little stop sign, waiting to flag down flagrant speeders. I have no idea what the fine or penalty is, my family there says that they take your license away... it's not a trivial deal apparently.

But ask others when you are there for the latest... my family also tells me that this speed limit thing flares up now and then, then the cops get bored and go back to something else.

you will see the speed limit signs have exclusions for Ferrari

:-) enjoy the tour is phantastic. Stay at Planet Hotel opposite of the factory gate. $100 a night and its a great hotel. Ask for rooms in the 05 or 06 line!

On friday I am heading over to Italy for 12 days.

I have a Tour of the factory on the 28th and then a tour of Lambo the next day.

Anyone else going to be there during this time?

I will be renting a 360 for the trip, if any local F-chatters are interested in hooking up that would be great.

What are the speeding laws like in Italy?
