Now I am specifically not talking about street cars, where you typically do not drive at 150mph, and the wing is mostly for show, but on the track i believe the 360 Challenge can definitely use more downforce on the rear at speed. The rear gets wiggly sometimes, and i am looking for a wing for the Challenge car. I think Ferrari recognized this by sticking wings on their new GT 360's.

Anyone know where I can get a rear wing? I'm trying for a Stradale unit but they are in short supply and only available to a few dealers.

I got mine from ebay as well. Was not painted. Took it to a paint shop to do a chromo check vs the car's existing paint.

And yes, Koenig is one place I got the idea from. But I also saw a 328 at Cavallino's in FL with the same wing and loved it.

Andreas,
Where did you get your wing? The Ebay one is a Koenig.

Yes, Andreas, my taste can be suspect as well. Maybe it has something to do with being in IT? :-)

Enjoy your beers!

Thanks Lucas! You realize you're in bad company (mine that is). Minority report.

I just have a fetish about rear wings. Ever since I saw a Countach I knew somthing was missing and sure enough soon thereafter they offered it with a wing. That wing didn't do the car any good as Mitch rightfully points out. The Countach lost about 13 mph on topspeed. But what it gained in looks was IMHO priceless.

BTW: There is an interesting article about the Stradale in the latest issue of Forza and the considerations they went through in how to make it faster in cornering without adding drag (as Mitch points out). They came to the conclusion of the slightly bigger end lip and internal aeros under the car, but no additional wing. Interesting as most Challenge cars (and the Stradale claims to be a street legal version of one) actually do use wings not unlike the black 360 in this thread. Also of course the 360 GT uses a HUGE wing.

So Ferrari's claim, that the 360 does not need a wing might be true, *IF* the engine is left stock. But otherwise it seems to need one.

Oh, and yes: Mine is purely cosmetic. And it does serve well for placing one's beer at an event.

I just wonder how many of these cars with wings have been setup to use the forces the wing produces?

In race cars, the wings are carefully tuned so that at low speeds when the wing does nothing the mechanical grip is balanced, and at higher speeds where the wing dominates the performance envelope that the car reamins balanced. Then in the transition zone between mechanical grip and aerodynamic grip, balance must be retained. If you have a balanced car to begin with (remembering this is a Ferrari chat site) and you add a big wing that causes massive understeer at high speed; what have you really gained? If you then trim out that wing to reduce high speed understeer, then why are you draging around the excess weight? and aerodynamic drag?

No, all in all, I suspect these contraptions are just placed on the car with no thought whatsoever as to actually using the forces the wing produces. As long as this is the case, a wing is just plain RICE.

Lookup "Race Care Aerodymanics: designing for speed" Joseph Katz. and read it!

Only the black car with the big ugly wing has the wing positioned in such a way that the wing operates as anything more than an efficient spoiler! All the other cars are hoisting wings for show and not for go. And indeed, if the black car with the big ugly wing had the wing placed andother 12" rearward, that wing would produce more downforce, and the low pressure region would enhance the underbody aerodynamics already existing in the F360.

If you are contemplating a wing, and you want the wing to actually function, you need to read the above mentioned book, and adjust your aerodynamic plan accordingly. Otherwise, you are just RICING the car up.

It's not just the ricers who add wings. Here's a 308 with a picnic table added.

it's funny, exotics put wings on their cars to add downforce (functional). ricers copy the idea by adding big wings and now small ones but neither of them nearly as functional. now with all the new exotics coming out with aerodynamic body shapes that produce downforce without the needed wings what will those ricers think of next?

i think if you're looking to make your 360 or any F-car stand out from the rest, just incase it doesn't enough, then it's ok...to a point. i wish i had these pics with me (i'll look for them), but there was a dude in japan who made his 360 a ricer mobile. he added an F50 style hood, big wing, a whole new body kit, and numerous other aethestically pleasing parts to it. in the end you'd question whether it was a 360 at all.

...so its not about the looks or functionality its about separating yourself from the Asian crowd?

I think its mostly gaudy, personally, but it does get me excited at some angles. I think the Hamann wing is best.

I think the wings shown are ugly. the 360 doesn't need them, works just fine without them, and by putting them on, makes the car look like a honda.

Hey Jeff.....
"Don't need a wing on a street car? As opposed to the multi functional uses for a street Ferrari...."

Boy that is a great quote!

I always get a kick out of the 4 door Honda sedans that some kid has put a huge wing on to make the car "look sporty". That black 360 reminds me of the same "Rice Boy" mentality. Last year I saw a Mustang GT and the guy had removed what I considered to be a very attractive stock spoiler and added a huge stupid looking wing.

I think that if the 360 needed a wing, Ferrari would have put one on it.

But again no need for street ...

I saw a hammann 360 in monaco. wasn't too bad, or overly induldged; i don't think the car needs a wing, or more downforce, as a street car.

Also, that massive Cavallino Rampante covering on the back of the red coupe is kind of silly.
