Just out of interest, a good friend of mine paints helmets etc in the UK. A link to his website is www.pureart.org.uk. He can replicate any style that you can think of !

Well worth a look

Paulie Squid, you think that is Ray's new helmet?

I guess we'll see on Friday :-)

Paul, there's lots of ways to treat flags. They can be flat like are often painted on fighter pilot helmets, they can be waving in the sky, they can be put into another shape, like Italy or the USA.

Upload

On larger spaces (like when they're built into the original paint design) they're usually done more free form and wavy. But to put them in small to incorporate them into an existing design, you're probably more limited. What does your existing helmet look like? Do you have a picture?

Mike, would you have any examples of flags? I was thinking of an Italian and an American flag. Any ideas?

Paul: If it already has good clearcoat on it, then yes, it can be added. The process would be to roughen the clearcoat in just those areas so that it has a "bite" for new paint, then paint the flags where you want them. The best way for it to look pretty "normal" and with a minimum of effort/cost would be to NOT have to clearcoat the entire helmet again, but instead to only clearcoat the areas that have been repainted with the new flags, and to "blend" the new clearcoat at much as possible into the surrounding area, probably re-polishing the whole thing. It might leave a slight "edge" if you're looking for it, but at most distances it would be invisible. Sort of like spot-painting a scratch on your car.

Mike, can you add a small design to a helmet that already has been completed? I have a Ferrari Challenge open face helmet and may want to add something to it. Thinking of a simple design of 2 flags. Can it be done?

Yeah Mike, my statement about the ego thing was a bit over the top. Apologies. As you say personal preference. When I got my first racing helmet with 18 years I had to personalize it. But never did that again. I much rather prefer now to emulate an existing helmet/driver. I think it is more fun. But as you say, personal preference.

BTW: I'm still on for October. Looking forward to finally meet you. Maybe I'll have to bring my Schumacher helmet along. The 'Marlboro' lettering around the top is hard to do with a sticker because of the curvature.

Keep in mind that some countries (like the Formula 1 race we just had at Silverstone in the U.K.) require that all cigarette ads be REMOVED... so you won't see Marlboro on the rear wing of the Ferraris or even on the helmets worn at those events.

In any case, I can create the ads on the helmets too, but that just about doubles the cost and time of the paint job due to all the labor, unless stickers or decals are used instead of paint masking with frisket stencils. I personally don't like the ads (whether Marlboro, Vodaphone, or TicTac) for my own helmets. I'm not a sponsored race driver, and I personally don't want an exact replica of some famous driver's helmet, complete with advertising and the Schumi signature on the side. Personal preference, and individual taste. I put a replacement of the original Bell helmet sticker back in the front white space on my full-face helmet where the Marlboro logo would be on Schumacher's.

Andreas, thanks for the comments on the Enzo helmet, but I don't understand what you mean by the question "why someone needs their own design". Each Formula 1 driver has their own design, even within a team... for example, Schumi's differs from Barricello's. I can't think of any reason why a person would *not* want to personalize their helmet with their own design and/or color scheme. Otherwise, why not just leave it with the white cue ball look? After all, you've certainly personalized your 308, eh? I'm sure it wasn't an "ego" thing, merely your personal preferences. Same goes for a helmet design.

Just wondering why I feel so strongly about Marlboro. After all I'm not a smoker (anymore, but never smoked that brand anyway). Maybe because we almost went into hysteria in the US about banning smoking and also because without Marlboro, no Schumacher in a Ferrari and no Championships (Marlboro pays his salary).

Not a fan of Marlboro, but you can't have it both ways. Besides: I think the helmet looks a tad boring without the sponsorship (same goes for Irvine's).

Mike I almost felt like sending you my Schumacher helmet. But then I read 'without the ads', well that to me is the whole point of it. I already have the Schumacher helmet and now I'm trying desperately to get those Marlboro logos back onto it. I just hate a fake replica without the real logos. It is the MARLBORO-Ferrari team after all. Not the whiteblobs-Ferrari team.

(stepping off my soap box now)

Good work on that Enzo helmet. But I don't understand why somebody needs his own design. Sounds like a big ego to me. Anyway.

Mike- those look amazing! Highly classy of you to do this.

PS: you have one of the best looking 308GTS I have *EVER* seen, the custom red roof really completes the car!

Best!
Ben.

For most helmets, price ranges from $275-$400 (plus whatever actual insured shipping is to get it back to you) presuming the helmet is "like new". If it requires minor repair of dings or scratches first, that usually just adds $20. No money is required up front. You send me your helmet, and then you send me the money when I email you photos of the completed job while it's going through final cure before shipping it back to you.

You can see some other samples and a "design sheet" you can play with at
http://www.fca-se.org/helmet.htm

My personal favorite for a full-face helmet is a Schumacher style without the ads. But if you've seen something else you like, or want to do some other Formula 1 design, perhaps changing the colors, just let me know. Generally you'll have your helmet back in less than 3 weeks from the time I get it.

Here's my latest "creation" done for the Florida owner of an Enzo that's yellow with black interior. If you want to see instructions on how to paint your own, check the archived thread at
