272 units of the 288 GTO were build in 1984 and 1985, this is the official planned amount of cars. The GTO nr. 273 was for Nicky Lauda, but he sold it later. Now this car belongs to the collection of the Ferrari dealer Loris Kessel in Switzerland.

Marvin, thanks for the year correction; i knew it was 3 years, but thought '86 started them, not ended them... Thank you for clarifying...

I've seen the numbers either 271 or 272, who knows. The years they were made were '84-'86 BTW.

You're correct DES, 271. Kinda depends on whether you count the muletto or not. And yes I believe one made in the last year.

I was always looking for a registry of them myself to see which ones are still around etc, but never found anything like that.

It's my understanding that there were only 270-271 made, is that correct...? 39-40 in '86, 230 in '87 and 1 in '88...? Can anyone validate this...? If so, why'd they only make one in 1988, is it still around and who's the lucky owner...?

Well Bert, if you end up making poly copies off your rebody, maybe you could run a small biz selling them? I know at least one person interested...
:-)

If you sell the whole package for say 3k (allowing 1k for shipment to the US), you're in the market.

At the risk of being called off-topic again:
I think all the polyester sets on the market are ugly, they try to make the 308 in an exact replica of the GTO, but it looks wrong in details and is much to wide for the 308 "SWB", with the endresult not being a pretty car.
I think, in my humble opinion, that the proportions of "the thing" I'm building are just as good as a standard 308, the front and tailspoiler stretch the lines, make it look longer and sleek, and the 10 cm/4 inch extra width is just enough for a little meaner look (GTO is 8 inch wider).
Not to mention, the replica sets available are 6.500-8.500, without shipping to Europe. Though I spent a small fortune on welding wire, CO2 gas, cuttingdisks, filler and sanding paper it was only 10% of that maybe. A 2x1 meter sheet of 0.8 mm steel is less than 10, I used 3. And if I had done everything right the first time, the car would be finished 6 months ago. You can notice in the pictures I did a lot of things twice, cutting off and starting over.
I'm not to sure what effect all this welding will have in the long run (this 308 has a lot of hidden stress in it, best would be to heat it till it glows a bit to release all the ternsions), in some places the layer of filler is thicker than I would have liked...a good poly copy would be much lighter, lets see how things work out.

Gee, the car is at my parents' 5 km away, I was there with my bicycle and now I'm out of breath. To much sanding dust in my lungs :-)

Bert, interesting, that you're considering making a polyester mold. Not trying to be cynical, but why bother? I mean you could just buy those pieces off the shelf in the US.

I remember saying on here (FChat), that they hate the polyester replicas and that is the easy way, blablabla and they admired you for your hard metal way. Since I've been looking into creating a GTO rebody myself I have to say, using the off the shelf components cuts a few corners from your process but still is not what I call 'easy'. It is still a ton of work, time and money.

Alberto..Back on Topic. I have had the pleasure of driving both the 288 and right after that a 360F1. WOW..is what I can say about the 288. It is a whole different machine, and the power is a sudden power.Nowhere near the smooth linear acceleration that you will feel in a 360. As far as comparing them, that would not be fair. But it depends on what you are using it for.

A weekend power-horse, 288gto.

A daily driver,360.

The GTO does take a little more thinking to drive and once those turbos sing, you should be holding on.
If it came to a choice for me personally to make between the two, 360 six speed, non F-1 hands down. Based on the fact that it is more daily street. But, the GTO would be added to the "collection" eventually.

Adreas: "From a Fchat member. A masterpiece in the making. Thread is in the Showroom ->308 Archive"

I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, crude welding, mucho filler, will spray myself with simple acrylic 2K.
If it holds together well for a year I will have it repainted professionally, otherwise I'll make a polyester copy of fenders&spoilers and try again.
Just hope it will look like a genuine Ferrari and not a kitcar. Have 4 weeks holiday, reserved all for the car (like last years holiday). Hope to have it at least painted after that. I have a link in my profile where I regularly put new pictures of the progress:
www.ferrari308.tk

You can rent a GTO! Or not? Look at the pictures!

I have been lucky enough to drive the GTO quite a bit. It is by far one of my favorite Ferraris to drive. A friend of mine had one for years, and I think I miss it more than he does. It is an absolute blast to drive. Imagine an F40 with skinnier tires. In the GTO, you could be doing 100, downshift, floor it, and the tires just let loose! The owner of the GTO also had an F40 and we were going down Route 83 in Oak Brook, and the GTO was less than a car length all the way to 155. The GTO sounds better than the F40, too...It has a turbo F1 car sound.

I recently saw a website which documents a transformation of a 308 to a 288 project. It was truly beautiful craftsmanship, but I believe that one was somewhere in Europe. Does that car belong to anyone here, or at least does anyone know thw URL for that site? I'd love to see it again.

Martin at Cavallino..thanks. It was a pleasure dealing with you and looking forward to dealing with you again in the future. By the way the car is running great.

Gentlemen..Forza has a special issue regarding the GTO, specifically the 250 but also the buyers guide to the 288 GTO. It is their June 1999 issue. I have the issue, and am very happy to make copies and fax to whomever wants to see the all the details and the blurb on the car.

Mark go check out Bob Norwood's website, He did 264 mph in a super modificato 308 with gto body panels.
For me the GTO its the best looking Ferrari, its the reason alone why I got interested in owning a Ferrari.

Don't know about comparing the 360 to the GTO performance wise as I've never driven either, but the GTO is light years ahead in the looks department.

Alberto-
I have had the pleasure of riding in a pristine 288 GTO just a few days ago. All I can say is wow. It was incredible when the driver would wind the RPM's up to about 4000, when the turbos wake up, and then mash the loud pedal straight through the floor. Unbleivable power. But, compared to the 360, the 360 is like a luxury car.

Chuck Schoenfeld has a 288 GTO-goes to many track events and is a very nice guy. But he tracks a 355 Challenge, not the GTO. Yes it is beatiful, but very cramped inside so forget it if you are over 5'10".

BHP is the same on the GTO as the 360 (400), but the GTO is 130 kg (286 lbs) lighter, so it has a better power to weight ratio. Top speed: GTO=306 km/hr. 360=295 km/hr. But I echo the other posts that the 360 is probably an easier car to drive (except for the 360 Challenge which is a difficult car to drive).

I too love the GTO and wish i could fit in one.

Road & Track just had a blurb on page 40 in their "15 years ago" section about GTO- Top Speed Shootout

(Norwood Bonneville Ferrari GTO) 3.7 sec 0-60 198 mph top speed $150,000 as tested

Ricky Rudd "better aerodynamics could have brought 220mph"

Ohio's 7.5 mile Transportation Reserach Center Proving ground.

The Ferrari chassis was loaded with a 675-bhp Can-Am Chevy V-8

Not that I ever had the pleasure to drive either car, but from reports I read it sounds the 360 is a lot more civilized. The GTO's turbos required some good reflexes and throttle control to keep the beast from going sideways. The 360 is a lot more refined with all electronic gizmos etc. So probably a lot more forgiving.
