I think a lot has to do with the way the new drivers are given the licenses.I am pretty sure it takes something like 16-18 months drive time with a licensed driver before the new license is issued.O forgot to mention that all new drivers are instructed as to how to drive on the autobahn prior to getting the lic. later, yasir |

@Coop I do not live at the Taunus, my first car was a Ford Taunus (do you know this model ?), so that was my intention for this username. I live in a small village near Osnabrueck. |

I like the way, that all traficants moves for faster cars. If you are driving on the autobahn, and look in the rearviewmirror and the cars are pulling out to give room, you know there's a Ferrari, Lambo or Porsche comming your way. It's acutally quite funny making a little game out of it, trying to guess which car it is. I have always been good at it. One time a guessed a yellow 355 on a 3 kilometre distance. Love the autobahn, everyone drives so fast. |

See my little Lancia here. In a trip to the southern part of Germany the engine seized just before Frankfurt. Two hours at 170-180 (110 MPH) killed it...
It's great to drive the 308 there, long curves going down and then up again, you feel your stomach! I know the GTSi is not a fast Ferrari but around 200 KM/H (125 MPH) it's a great car. Then you get overtaken by something that goes another 50-70 KM or 30-50 MPH faster with 55AMG on the back... It's nice when you drive in a group of faster cars that there is some kind of mutual respect among total strangers. You know that the other car that's not as fast will make room soon as possible. Driving on the Autobahn you understand why all the Audis, BMWs and Mercedesses are build the way they are. And lots, lots of 911s by the way, every German dentist has one. |

I spent some time over in Germany years ago in the military. A buddy of mine was on temporary duty there in a rental car and got tagged by photo radar on the Autobahn 2 weeks before he was to head back to the states. German authorities worked with the rental car company who provided his US address. The authorities then mailed a ticket to him (to the US) with a copy of the photo clearly showing him at the wheel. I think he was doing about 120 kph in a 80 kph zone. It was one of those areas on the Autobahn where they end the unlimited zone and throw up a speed limit sign just as he was entering the city limits of a small town. Ticket was pretty steep. About 300-400 USD if I remember correctly. I taped the Autobahn show and just watched it. Great show. The part that covers the history of the Autobahn was interesting. I didn't realize how involved Hitler was in it's creation. Ironic how its now the dream road for the the whole world of speed-enthusiasts... |

Markus, You are right. There are no junker cars here, they would never make it through TUV inspection. There are no equivelents over here to the ratted-out 64 Chevy with bald tires. You hardly see anything over 10 years old, unless it is a classic. |

nickm: it is probably the same show, but I think it was a test driver, not Ruf himself. It would be great if we could get rid of left-land bandits here in the USA. "Drive right", great motto. |

This topic will be a good subject for my first post! I have been living in Germany since 1989 and have had to commute 1.5 hours each way on the Autobahn for over 8 of those years. Logged hundreds of thousands miles and used-up a lot of cars over here. Some Random thoughts/observations: Reasons Autobahn is safe: 1. Limited Access, on-ramps every 5 miles or so between cities. 2. The Asphalt has a higher friction for better grip at high speeds and wet(wears out tires quicker!). 3. No road surprises, very well maintained. 4. German radios have an auto-funtion that interrupts your program and reports accidents and traffic jams. 5. BETTER DRIVER EDUCATION! More notes: Average speeds in MPH. 1. Mom & Pops 85MPH 2. Quick drivers 100-110MPH 3. Quick drivers with new toys 125MPH. Yes, everone will open up their car to see what they will do on an empty strech of road, then very rarely. Why? Because you find out that above 100MPH everything on the car wears out exponentially FAST. Ask any racer with a lot of track time! About Insurance not covering you above 130KPH, I think it is in reference to 130KPH being the "recomended" speed limit for the complete Autobahn, so if you wreck, they can give you a ticket when they measure your skid marks! More stuff: Most of the Autobahn is now filled with traffic, difficult to find open areas for wide open, but 125MPH is no problem in spurts in most places between cities. Truckers will make you go "postal" over here! They have locked computers in truck that record speed/time etc.they can only go 90KPH and they constantly pass at 90.5KPH. The road is packed with them now. 99% speeding tickets are with cameras,Polizei actually spend their time serving and protecting, They are well respected. I am in Germany now so I am six hours ahead of states. Will answer back ASAP. Regards |

I would have loved to catch the special. Will it be repeated? Unlike how we joke only worry whats in front of you, you must watch your rear view mirror to see if someone is coming on you... fast. Then, you get out of the way out of common courtesy. Here in Los Angeles and a lot of city areas, people are too busy staring at the opposite sex, following too close, not signaling, talking on a cell phone, or not moving with the speed of traffic. I loved it there. Average crusing speed was between 190-210kph when driving for more than 2 hours in one sitting unless in a restricted zone. These you DO slow down for or else they will pull you over in a heartbeat. Also, I recall that if you were doing over 130kph in a restricted zone, American insurance companies offering coverage to servicemembers overseas in Germany ceased to cover you after 130kph if you wrecked... OUCH! Maybe it was only select insurance companies or it was German insurance companies. But, thats a very steep penalty for driving fast in the unrestricted zones. Sunny |

Was this the same show I saw about 6 months ago, where Alois Ruf was drinving that 911 going 212MPH AT NIGHT?! CRAZY! I think Mr. Ruf was saying that one wrong move, or somebody doesnt see you coming up on them at night (at 212mph) and it's all over with. I'm suprised the guy is still alive. I'm sure he's not going to be dying of "natural causes". |

There was a book published a few years ago, called American Autobahn, if i remember correctly, and it traced the history of the turnpike and interstate system in the US (which did not have a speed limit originally, when the Pa. Turnpike opened- in fact it was touted as a hi-speed motorway for safe driving; today of course it is a death trap), and compared US highway development to the A-Bahn in Germany. Interesting reading. The problem is usually the drivers, not the road. |

I watched show brought back memories when I was in Germany during service only problem I didn't have a Ferrari. I drove pretty fast, but not fast enough. I want to go back again with a Ferrari someday. Germany does really have some great roads. |

I watched it. I loved the part about cup holders & German Cars. And the part relating to the other thread about the problem with new cars, how "Driving" was an Activity in & of itself to be enjoyed solely for the fun of driving. I hope alot of the Old Car bashers watched that show!! { } |

I missed the part about Ghost-rider or Ghost-car? What was that all about? The 212 in the Ruf 911 with 3 people in the car. I don't know if I'd sit sideways in the back seat with the camera. That is one crazy tv film crew. |

Did anyone catch the history channel special on the autobahn? 9 to 10 cst? Get this, in terms of deaths per miles traveled, the autobahn is safer than the interstates in the U.S. They showed a RUF certification drive on the bahn at 212 mph. Regards |
