Mario, sorry you didn't get the car. However, I think it goes both ways. The owner obviously believes that he/she can get more money then what you're offering, so is willing to walk away from this deal (appears that 1/2 of a service according to you is ~$3.75k.) for $3750 dollars. Since a PPI is already done and no major things found wrong, perhaps this is your 'right car'. Just a thought.

better yet, wait a while, and the owner will either HAVE to do service(on his $$) or if he can't pawn it off on some unsuspecting NON-Fchat person, maybe he'll loosen up a bit and come back your direction. After all, 1/2 of whatever the service turns out to be is not a huge chunk of change...maybe the correct question is 'how badly does he wanna sell?'

Mario,

obviously I don't know about your particular situation, it's the general attitude Iwas addressing, as you point out "Service" is "your issue"...and whether the car needed it or not a rather secondary issue. Just in general terms many guys see these cars as a simple commodity, buy, use, sell.

JRV,

this was from a private owner who believed the service was an issue I should contend with since it ws "my issue". He's keeping the car and either driving without the service or he will service the car.

I like the "flipper" story...although in this case..I am certain it wasn't a flipper job...

Mario,

Just go to Monterey and look around the streets of Carmel, Monterey etc. You will find many cars with for sale signs.

Of course you will also see the occasional will code for food!

>>I attempted to negotiate 1/2 of the service cost from the price of the car to no avail. <<

Was discussing this very issue last evening.

The reason they use the miles up and unload it is specifically to avoid spending on service. If they turn around and spring for service They have then defeated their whole "plan".

The "game" is called "Flipping". The Players are known as "Flippers", (not to be confused with the cuddly talking Dolphin of TV fame). {:-)}

Although you can take a clu about Modus Operundi from the TV show theme song:
Flipper/s, Flipper/s, faster than lightening.

They will stick the next guy with service expenses faster than lightening. {:-)}

Good move. Figure out what you want to have in the car ($$-wise). And figure a major service in that. If the price isn't right, walk away.

When I bought my car, I knew it needed tires and a major service. When it was all done, I was happy with the total cost and have loved the car ever since.

If you don't have one before Monterey, bring your checkbook there and I'll bet you find a great deal...

Well, the great debate over who pays for the 15K major on the 355 I was to pick up tomorrow stopped the deal.

As many of you know from reading my previous post, I was debating doing the service and figuring cost.

I attempted to negotiate 1/2 of the service cost from the price of the car to no avail. Fact is, I was paying good money for the car and the cost of the service made the total cost of the car not a good deal for me.

SO.....I'm a bit deflated and now even more hungry to get an F-car...the right one that is.

Thanks to all of you for your opinions...I will return again as my quest to get a Red/Tan 355 6speed before the Monterey Concorso in less than 3 weeks goes on.

Mario
