A 250 GTO was sold to jap collectors for 21million U.S. dollars back in the crazy speculating 1980s earle 90s. If you didnt know of this well now you do, just because it isnt old news to you it doesnt mean that it didnt happened. This sale broke the Bugatti's record of 14 U.S. million dollars as the car sold for the highest price ever.

The highest price paid for a Ferrari was 8.0 million pounds sterling for a 250GTO paid by a Japanese buyer at the height of the Japanese bubble economy.

He only manged to sell it later for US 6.0 million.

Now that WAS a good programme :-) 40 minutes of Ferrari's showing mostly auctions, private collectors collections, and footage of Jim Spiro's Testarossa. Those auctions look mad in America, it sounded like a cattle market in there!

Excellent programme - i really enjoyed it, especially the 330 being driven everywhere - lucky guy, and good for him :-)

You're probably talking about the Bugatti Royale that Tom Monaghan, founder of Domino's Pizza, bought around that time. My memory tells me it was nine million, but then my memory tells me a lot of things that aren't true.

L. Wayne, I dont remember well but maybe it was from autoweek, road and track or car and driver. Also maybe again from this same sources I saw a Bugatti dont know the model but it sold for 14 u.s. million dollars back in the crazy late 80s.

John
As far as I know that is correct. Cavallino Holdings bought the package, Lawrance then bought 0856 for 10.3 million.
If he were to sell it which I doubt he will I bet it would go for more than that.

If I am right I think 3 japanese investors bought a 250 gto for 21 U.S. million dollars. I think that was around 1990.

Wayne:

Okay, I dug back through my records. That one is public record then as the ex-Meier 4561SA (SCM 8/02, Mike spilled the beans on that one). I'll leave out who I have as buying it in 1990, but it is in Keith's 250 GTO book. I didn't realize that it sold in 1999.

Jim:

As I understand it the number reported for 0856 is specualtive. I've been told that Stroll bought 0856 as a package with several other cars, so the true value assigned to it may be difficult to unearth.

Wayne,

Not that it matters...but the Bugatti went for around 8mm GBP. I got to sit in it for a "spin around the block" if you will.

Engine is 12.8 liters straight 8. Yes, it's a monster!

Cheers

I've seen the Bugatti Royale once at the Louis Vuitton Car show at Rockefeller Center some years back... That thing is huge... Collosal is an understatement..

John, thanks for sharing. I believe it was the highest amount paid for a car at auction "in recent years." I think I remember that the highest auction price for an automobile was something like $10 million for a Bugatti Royale during the height of the late 80s/early 90s frenzy.

The BBC progam dealt with things sold at auction. The 330 TR/LMI s/n 0808 was the highest valued car sold at auction. (Defenately the hightest sum at auction recently, not sure about ever) As Jim G. points out there have been recent private sales for higher sums. (It was fairly unusual for a car of this calliber to change hands at auction- I say this but Jim, also sold his Cobra Daytona Coupe at Monteray in 2001 for 4MM.

Yes, Jim has driven to the car to work a few times. He drives it every weekend.

The Breadvan is not owned by Jim. It is owned by Monte Shalett, also of New Olreans who has had the car since 1986, and raced the car all over the US and Europe.

These are not glass case collectors.

Please let me know after someone sees the tape. The show was filmed while Jim and I and a few friends were on a weekend drive. It was funny because the camera crew shot it while we were having a burger at a truck stop.

Dr. Erik, the car in question was purchased at this record-setting price in 1990 and wasn't sold until 1999. To the best of my knowledge, it has remained in Switzerland the entire time.

Is it true that there is a 250GTO in Iraq?

Somebody mentioned that Sadam's sons had one ... this would be a crying shame, but in the end if that car is destroyed during the process of riding the world of such people, well I would not stop that process. Sadam's sons were very, very bad eggs ... and responsible for many peoples death. I guess one important car pales compared to that.

I've had this discussion either here or on another forum last year sometime but later discovered that my response was wrong. I incorrectly stated that the sale of 3909 GT to Takeo Kato in 1989 for 10 million pounds sterling (around $14 million at the time) represented the highest recorded amount ever paid for a Ferrari. I have since learned that a less-public sale of another GTO (witholding the s/n on this one) to a Swiss buyer really takes the cake.

This buyer paid nearly $17 million for the car after working out a deal to flip it to a major Japanese corporation for something close to $22 million. After purchasing the car, however, his deal with the Japanese corporation fell through and he was stuck with his new purchase. He sued the seller, stating the the sale was contingent upon his deal to resell the car but, after nine years of fighting it out in a Swiss court, the buyer lost the battle and eventually sold the car for a fraction of what he paid for it.

In the late 80's a 250GTO sold for a price that I believe was about 17 million US. While the prices of everything crashed after that they are again rising. a 250 GTO recently sold for about 9 million US. A few years ago 0856 a 330P4 sold for 10.3 million US. (This was a very original and unmolested car)

In 1989 a japanese collector payed nearly 14.000.000 Dollar for a 250 GTO (3909). This car was resold in 1994 for 2.500.000 Dollar. What a loss.

Jim does not own the Breadvan. But he does own the 330TRi/LM. And yes, it is driven around constantly.

John Houghtaling,II was with him when he bought the car, so I am sure that he will chime in sometime. If anyone wants to see either car in person simply come down to the 4th annual French Quarter Concourso in New Orleans this October. All said it is the BEST Ferrari event of the year.

Guys,
In the UK on BBC 2 a program called THE HIGGEST BIDDER is on UK TV at 2150 hrs UK time.

The program tells a incredible story of the most expensive racing car in the world a 1962 Ferrari Testarossa 330 sold at auction in America last year for a staggering $6.5 million dollars. The owner Jim Spiro a New Orleans stockbroker does not keep it locked away but actually drives this Ferrari amazing to work every day......

Can this be true if so that so cooooooooool. Has anyone in the states know about this.
