Dan is on his way back to Kansas. If the smile on his face that may have to be surgically removed is indicative of the time he had, I think he enjoyed himself.

Mike, I'm planning on arriving at Huntsville airport on Sunday the 12th at 10:15am. Will have time until about 2pm that day, so maybe we could setup a meet/lunch somewhere. As you know I'll be at Tranquility base in the afternoon. Haven't picked a hotel yet, thinking about la Quinta (Marriot is too expensive).

We can take this discussion off line, but wanted to start it in this forum so your local friends can join in.

365, 465, ahh I must be dreaming!

Funny btw Mike, I'm planning on doing my 10 year anniversary next year in Hawaii too. You can probably give me a few pointers.

Anyway, let's keep in touch and before I make airplane reservations I'll send you an email to hash things out.

You can always have a ride in my 365 which is a 456GT's grandfather. I'm always looking for an excuse to bring it out.

Andreas, I'm glad it works out that you're here before I leave (my wife and I are going to Hawaii for our 10-year anniversary -- we were married on Kauai). I can take you to meet Marcel any weekday, no problem. But if you can be here on a Saturday morning, that gives us the best chance to get together for a drive/ride with the 456.

Mike, you so cool! Great, I'll be there the week before you leave. I'll be coming to town on Sunday and leaving on Friday. However if we're planning on doing something more than a beer with friends, I could come earlier or leave later. Anxious to meet the master who did my louvre windows (they get so much attention).

Also the 456 is an old passion of mine. Would love to 'meet' one at close range. I think they're kinda underappreciated and definitely rare. We have one at the most at our meetings.

Andreas, sure. Remind me, which week are you coming? I'm leaving for Hawaii October 21 for two weeks. But if I'm not going to be around, I'll get one of the other Huntsville Ferrari guys to show you around and organize a little "group" get together, including Bill in his 456, and to take you over to meet Marcel at Corlett Auto (www.CorlettAuto.com), who did your quarter window louver work.

This Saturday we also expect to have Bill H. in his new (to him) 456GT, so you you can ride half the time with me, and half the time in his car. That way your girlfriend can come and switch off also if you'd like. I'm sure you'll like comparing the "classic" 308 to a newer 12-cylinder Ferrari. And then of course you'll have a chance to meet with Erik and compare his classic 12-cyl.

I just had a guy at work drive my 1987 328 (http://groups.msn.com/davesamquick/ferrariohiochapter.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=1996) down to Tacoma, WA from Redmond, WA and I did it for free becasue he wanted to drive it.

I followed him in one of my other cars and he drove us both back in the 2003 MINI Cooper S (http://groups.msn.com/davesamquick/2003minicoopers.msnw) because he wanted to try that one too. :-)

You should get to know someone with a Ferrari - I would bet a lot of folks would let ya if they knew you a bit. There are ~150+ folks I know of in the Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinati area.

Here are photos from last year's Ferrari gathering in Cleveland:
http://groups.msn.com/davesamquick/ferrariohiochapter.msnw

Happily, I moved back to WA this year... very few folks in the midwest seem to drive their Ferraris daily like I did when I was there.

I'm not 'down on ferrari trivia', i just am saying that you dont HAVE to know all of it to be a "fan". If a person is a fan, most likely they will be interested by the history of ferrari and read into it.

Dan, I am just stating my opinion. You may be correct to say that they've been dedicated to racing for 60 years, but i wouldnt say theyve been nearly dedicated to making road cars for that long. Enzo said the only reason he made road cars was to finance the racing programs.

Before it just sounded like you two were just in some sort of pissing contest to see who 'knew' (see: able to use yahoo) more trivia. that really isnt neccessary. How much history or trivia you know isnt important because if you are a true fan, then you will read into the history and learn it eventually, as DES has.

Mike, what does that mean? I'm a little confused.

Tim why does it sound like your trying to pick a fight with us? We were just messing around. In my opinion History has a lot to do with Ferrari. The fact that for almost 60 years they 've deticated themselves to making the best racing and sports cars ever. Not when it was in fashion to do so ( GT-40, Viper, Dare I say corvette). No Ferrari wasn't just about the bottom line. Ferrari is in it for the good and the bad. And I belive that kind of dedication should be given its due respect.

Patrick and Dan... ignore Tim N. Even though he is certainly a guy who is probably justified in his claim of knowing complete bullshit.

Knowing trivia about the marque you love is something that can be quite INTERESTING. Keep it up.

Patrick & Dan- I'm glad you guys are able to use a search engine to look up the answers to pointless trivia questions. Knowing all that pointless trivia is complete bullshit. When it comes down to it, a car is still just a car, the fact that the maker has alot of history doesnt matter. If it really did, then why isnt everyone driving a porsche, since they have had more sucess in motorsports than ferrari. dont get me wrong, there is some emotional thing about ferraris, otherwise everyone would have a faster, cheaper, lower maintenace, better handling on track (a FERRARI owner told me this!), torquier and more fuel efficient Z06!

I can vouch for DES being a big fan (even though ive never personally met him). If he wasnt a fan he wouldnt be here in the first place or have 5000+ posts. He didnt know too much when he first came here about a year ago, but now he knows alot and now he actually contributes to the forum.

What Lee is talking about is this year's Ferraris and Friends event at Talladega Roadcourse (not the big oval) coming up Nov 15.

Details can be seen via the links at
www.fca-se.org or www.fca-se.com
or specifically at www.TradeTutor.com/tgpr

It's one of the safer places to drive at your car's limits and a great place to get rides in a variety Ferraris or other sports cars.

And I can vouch for Mike Charness's QV. He tossed me the keys at Talledega in March and that thing runs like a scalded dog! And so damned clean!

Plus I got white-knuckle rides in a 360 spyder (thanks Bart), another QV (thanks John), a 328, and got to drive a 355 berlinetta (thanks James!!)

Go to this event!! I plan to take my carb 308 this year, for at least the "friends" session at noon ($25 donation).

Dan,
I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I've never ridden in a Ferrari, never sat in a Ferrari. Hell I've never had a chance to really even look at one. I'd love to own one for myself but that isn't possible right now. So I spend my days sitting on here listening to everyones stories and from just being around for almost a year I've heard many stories of people doing great things for people like you and I.
You can ask DES about the generosity here. This isn't your average forum where people only meet here. There are events all over (although I have yet to make it one) and as you can see it's fairly easy to find a ride or possibly a drive. I'm possibly going to the big one in New Orleans. You should definitly check it out. Hope to see you there:-)

Dan - definitely no offense taken, i'm not exactly known for my extensive Ferrari knowledge, if you know what i mean...

Take Doody's advice, join your local club, attend events, start networking; you'll meet some really awesome people as i have...
i don't know Mike Charness personally (but if i can get a helmet in time, he'll get an email from me), but he seems like a great guy and - well, just look at his offer, it speaks for itself. There are so many really awesome, interesting people here... i frequently get emails from people containing awesome pictures and stories of events and so on... i've made some real friends here and that's very valuable to me; moreso than the cars that some of them drive... In time, i'm sure you'll feel the same way...

In the mean time, go see Mike and don't leave out one detail when tell us about it when you get back... & take pictures...! :-)

Oh and to make that perfectly clear: The QV he passed was mine. But I never claimed to be a fast driver, just a big fan.
:-)

But that he passed the 355, that earns him extra credit. And he was also holding on to the 360s, although they eventually got by him.

Yes Luciano.

George is a very nice guy and talented driver. He drove the heck out of that thing. I remember him passing me at the 90 degree turn going to the s/f line: I was at the apex while he was passing me on the outside, sliding over all four wheels. It scared the living daylights out of me. But still, he was too concerned taking over his wheel for a brief drive in the parking lot. Despite the fact, that I offered him my car. :-(

I've gotten my first Ferrari ride and drive in a 360 Modena recently and I didn't have to pay for it. Just had to have my parents hire a real estate agent that we knew had one and a couple days later, I got a ride and a surprising drive!

In todays world, if you are nice, honest and show real enthusiasm for a certain car or brand, you will be welcome at any car event.

Dan, I'm convinced you've got the passion. Come to Huntsville in North Alabama. That's way less than a 15-hr drive according to the map sites. I'll be glad to be your first. I did that for another FChat member just recently (see www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/216778/262092.html?1054902143).

We'll try to get a few FChat folk together for you... just pick a Saturday with nice weather! But keep in mind I'm sure you'll be expected to post notes about the experience.

Heck I consider myself a Tifoso, but have no clue how many F40s were built. I think those numbers are sketchy anyway as it was not a limited production run.

Anyway Don, in case you make it to Chicagoland, my 308 is ready for you (just observe the speed limit). No need to bring cash, unless we decide to spend it on a good dinner.

No offence Pattrick or Des but I have bought countless books, read even more magazines, Ive seen all the movies, surfed the internet for hours, and planed each of my vacations to go to shows. I feel that Des is a great guy who is a big Ferrari fan but when talking to him I don't think he is as Knowlegeable on this subject as me( again no offence des).

Hey Jack, I live in Chicago. Maybe we can arrange something one day?
:-)

Mike, thanks much for your kind offer. I agree, within the 308 series there isn't much difference. I was hanging on to Bob's carburated one (no emissions crap left) by the bare finger nails with my QV as we were following each other.

Interesting, that you mention your track event. That would have been the last place for me to expect a key swap. Being track and all. As a matter of fact at a track event I asked a GT/4 owner to swap keys just to drive 100 yards up and down pitlane in first gear and he wouldn't even let me do that. That's when I got really depressed.

I have flown to Las Vegas just to get to drive the 348, 355 and TR for rent they have there. So covered those models. I once flew to LA to get to drive a Daytona, but the guy was a no show. So I do envy you for your 360, Daytona and 328 drives. Good for you.

Maybe I'm just a klotz or unlucky when it comes to F owners. Porsche guys, Beemers, Mercedes and Jag folks have given me gladly their keys (while of course sitting next to me). But Ferrari owners...

Ok, enough whining for one day.

Dan, hop on a plane and take them by their word. Forge the iron while it is hot.

Andreas, you can drive mine, but you won't find it much different than yours!

I find that the best place to swap rides is at a track. At the "ferraris and Friends" track events I organize at Talladega (the small roadcourse, not the big oval), folks swap keys all the time. I've *driven* 348's, 355's, a 360 spider, a Mondial, 328's, a couple different Testarossas, a Daytona, other 308's, as well as Porsches, Corvettes and a Viper. I've been grateful for the opportunities. Of course, it's a pretty safe track too, not like Road Atlanta.

Dan,

Get on a plane and fly out to California. I know
3 people that rent Ferrari's by the day. That way you can drive the car your interested in.
It's nice of the F-chat members to offer you a ride, It would be better too have your own F-car
for the day!

Dan, I'm in Indy and will give you a ride as long as it is not raining for free. I have been offered $20 by the Hostess Salesman stocking the shelves at Shell while I was filling up, for a ride. I gave him one for free,so he would help spread the word that F-car owners are far from arrogant, just normal car guys with passion!

I could use the $200.00 for repairs on the Mondial but I don't think Philly is less than 15 hours drive from you. SHUCKS!! :-( Oh well - good luck anyway. Driving a Ferrari is an exhilierating, stupendous experience!!

What's Midwest? Oklahoma or the Dakotas? If you can get to Dallas on one of our "2nd Tuesday" outings and seem like a nice guy, you could probably get a ride/drive.

I agree with the others here, take your $200 and join the FCA. Ask Jim Schad if he's received his moneys worth. I know in the last year he's driven a 328 and a Testarossa.

Some nice offers some of you are making. From my own experience (as a F car owner) it looks rather bleek: I'd pay the 200 bucks for a one minute ride even if I could get one. I have offered drives in my car to no avail. I don't think I have a reputation as a wreckless driver (no accident for 10 years, knock on wood), rather as a slow one. I know a bunch of F folks and have tried to get a drive, but so far only had luck once. I love nothing more than just get a quick feel for what other Ferraris are like, but it doesn't seem to ever happen. Heck I've been turned down by GT/4 owners (not trying to look down on them, I love the GT/4, but moneywise their risk was a bit smaller than mine if you know what I mean).

So Dan I wish you good luck.

And to Maranelloman, Mike, Doody and Martin I say: I might take you guys up next time I come close your hometown.

Dan,
If you come down to Florida I would be more than happy to help you out and you can keep the $200 towards a membership in your local Ferrari Club.

I am sure one of the guys will hook you up out there.

DES is a perfect example that dreams can become reality. Although I rather call them GOALS

dan - get involved in your local ferrari community. i've given a bunch of people their first-f-car-rides in my cars, and am happy to do so. i've let some of them drive too. follow your FCA and/or FOC chapters. go to events. etc. get to know the folks. unless you're a certified weirdo :-) they'll probably offer before you have the chance to ask.

Dan

I live in Europe and there are some companies here that offer a Ferrari driving experience of about 20 minutes track or road time for the equivalent of about $150, I would think you could find something similar. The good point is that insurance etc. is covered and it is a business deal not a favor etc.

Dan,

You are right..you are very forward. But, I'm sure if you were more forward about the enthusiasm and passion for Ferrari, rather than the $200...someone here would consider a ride at a minimum.

Sometimes a ride is more pleasurable....keeps you looking forward and focused on owning your own.

My 2cents
