Tillman, "A GUYS HAS DO WHAT A GUY HAS TO DO." You be the judge . Whatever the choice, you made the right one because you're content with it.

Thanks everyone.

I suppose I'll wait. The price differential made it interesting, though -- the GT4 is listed at $11,500, vs the (estimated) 27K+ that I'll probably spend on the GTS. Good things come to those who wait :-)

If anyone's interested, it's in the latest AutoTrader in the D/FW area.

Doug, That can be any car. Even later models can be altered and digital odometers today can be clocked. It just comes down to the point what is proof or documentation. How valid is it and how much does it convince you that it is correct. Or maybe you would rather buy a car that shows higher mileage that could have been tampered with also. But you don't check it because "no one" would alter a speedometer with 60,000 miles on it. Oh no, suppose it had 150,000 miles on it orig.. Be sure in your own mind or accept it as it is. You have to be the final judge.

Rob,
Does the check up cost at Norwood include a compression and leak down check? If not what will that cost?

Speedos on these cars are very easy to disconnect. In the late 80s, high mileage was taboo due to the inflated prices in the car market. It would have been very easy for a previous owner to disconnect the odo for a couple of years. That is why service records are great, they tell the mileage as well as the history.
On my Pantera, the speedo cable broke the other day. During the diagnosis of my problem, I realized that I can disconnect it in 10 seconds from the speedo side or trans side. New cable arrived today, but it made me realize how easily there can be undocumented mileage on these old cars.

For $250 or so Norwoods will check the car inside and out and tell you everything you need.

Tillman, I don't know how much of a DIY guy you are but if you don't know anything about the car have it checked out professionally. Then you are reasonably sure it has no major problems. To verify the mileage is something else. There are points at which you can verify it and then there are those you can't. Check it out first and look at the prices those cars are going for. Offer where you want to be and buy or not buy. I wouldn't close my mind totally to it. Be careful and check it out thoroughly. You say you may only keep it for a couple of years anyway. If thats the case why not wait until a GTS comes along. Don't rush it but if you have to have it check it out professionally first.

Tillman, don't even consider that car. You'll have more problems with a low mileage F-car than a beater GT4 with 250,000 miles on the odometer with the original motor. Just check the links here.
:-)

BTW, enjoyed meeting you the other day! Chris, you took a pic of my car and posted it... thx!

Tillman,

It was nice meeting you the other day, too. I hope you get the FCar that you want. Just to play devil's advocate - why don't you wait a little longer and save up for the GTS? The price differential isn't that much of a difference?

I know it's hard to wait. I feel a bit hypocritical here, but trying to give some voice of reason on the isle of passion!

By the way, check out the pics:

Greetings.

Last Saturday's dyno day really has me buzzed about the F-cars. While I cannot quite get that GTS yet, there is a GT4 locally that I can pick up cheap. I was thinking of driving it for a year or two and then going to the GTS.

The car has only travelled 11K miles in 28 years -- that's an average of just under 400 miles a year. I know that the car is going to require the 30K service, but what else should I look out for when I go check it out? Off the top of my head, I can think of fuel and brake lines, weatherstripping, tires. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Tillman
