Michael, Don't take me wrong. You asked me a personal question and I answerd it honestly. It is true many things are relative. The part of costing a lot has never occured with me , but then I haven't owned my Ferrari that long. BRGDS, MAGOO

It didn't take you long to figure that out did it?

No reason really, just sounded like you were speaking from experience and you were.

Because I've been there a number of times. Why do you ask?

A Ferrari is like a extramarital affair. You know you won't get your money back and it certainly is not a investment, but it's fun. Last but not least it could cost you a hell of a lot. These are the chances we take because we like our toys.

The old saying " You get what you pay for," is not my motto. You have to judge the market price the condition of the car and what you want in the car. Some people, such as myself like the Carb. models. We do not want a F.I. car. Simply because we want a bit of yesteryear. So put it all together because a Ferrari, unless it is a rare collector piece, is not a investment it is a toy that eventually you will tire of and get another one. If the truth would be known we put money into these cars knowing that we will never get it back. Having said that, this is not the reason we own them. It is because the car brings us pleasure no matter what we spend on it.

I paid $20K for my 79 308GTS about 6 weeks ago. It was in great shape. About 70K miles at the time. I haven't had to spend a dime on it yet. I have kept my eyes open to see what kind of deal I got. I think you can do better. It's easy to get the fever and jump on the deal, but be patient. You'll be able to fix it when it breaks with the money you save. (And it will break.)

$28,000 for a Carb 308 ?
The Mileage on the car is not that great that you have to have this car. Sitting around in the dealership does not help, although dealers appear to think that.
I agree if the car is perfectly nice offer $20K and walk if they do not accept it.

I will get a 308 red/black with 58K Miles and will have the engine rebuild before we sell this car. That car will be only $ 24,000, also a Carb. Doors will be redone too, typical problem. The reason for the re-build is simple, the car had not been driven for 3 years and is leaking in some spots.

Michael, my GT4 was driven by the previous owner only 2000mi in ten years prior to my purchase. Engine was tired and leaked everywhere. Physically, the body and interior were excellent. I only paid $24000 Cdn for it (~$17000 US).

This dealer is dreaming at that price (which, who is it by the way? Email me privately if you wish [click on my name above])

Way to much money. Offer $20K and plan on $5K in service. If you offer $20 and walk I bet they call you back. I would not let them do the service either. If they dont do all the other stuff that should go with the timing belt (as mentioned previously) you may end up doing the service over.

U need to talk to a Ferrari mechanic cus apart from just the timing belt change u will also have to change the rollers that the belts pass over, valve job, & it would b a good idea to remove the cams & have them polished, might as well check the clutch, pressure plate & throwout bearing while u r at it. & check out the suspension bushings & see if they r rotted.

unless the dealer is an authorized ferrari mechanic I would b happier if he gave u some $ off cus all that work is gonna run u over $5,000 US easily

If the car was stored for the last 10 years I would walk away....
Wait till you find what your looking for.
It took me 6 months and a few flights to find a car that fit my spects. But I'm glad that I waited till I found the right one....

My $28k 308 GTSi turned into a $40k car in less than 3 weeks due to prior work/receipts probably being falsified. if this is your first Ferrari you have no concept of how expensive these cars can be!!

At that price, they should CHANGE all fluids, spark plugs and wires along with the timing belts and check/adjust the valves. If the distributor caps and rotors are original, they are probably shot at that age/mileage. Check the rubber suspension bushings as well. (In Calif., we have a lower tolerance for decay.) Otherwise, knock them down 20% and do it yourself. If you buy a 308, you will want a QV. QV owners lust after 328's. Buy the best car you want and can afford.

Michael, that mechanic is correct in telling you that the most recent 5 years is the most important. You should try and negotiate a full 60k service, which includes a LOT more than just timing belts. Of course, all receipts would be nice, but this one does not have them since new. So you must assume the belts and engine seals have not been done. Never assume they HAVE been done. If the car has not been driven in 10 years, than I can almost guarentee that you will have issues with the engine seals and with the rubber suspension pieces. Be extra cautious, as a good $28k 308, can turn into a $40k 308n real fast if it needs engine seals and suspension.

NEVER settle. Take your time and find the right one. The car you mentioned has not been used in 10 years. Thats not good, and that makes a very unhappy Ferrari. Save some more $$$ and go get a medium mileage 308 QV or a nice 328. Make sure the services have been done, and that it has been driven regularly. Let me know if I can answer any more questions, I'm more than happy to help out.

HELLO AGAIN,

ANOTHER FERRARI OPPORTUNITY HAS ARISEN FOR ME.

THIS ONE IS A 1979 (BUILD DATE OCT/79) 308 GTS RED ON TAN WITH 97 THOUSAND KILOMETRES (ABOUT 60k MILES) AND THE ASKING PRICE IS $45,000 CDN (ABOUT $28 THOUSAND USD).

THE CAR COSMETICALLY IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION INSIDE AND OUT. MECHANICALLY I DON'T KNOW YET, HOWEVER (SEE BELOW).

IT HAS, HOWEVER, BEEN LARGELY UNDRIVEN OVER THE PAST TEN YEARS (OWNED BY THE CURRENT DEALER FOR MOST OF THAT TIME, WHO BY THE WAY IS NOT AN AUTHORIZED FERRARI DEALER BUT A USED EXOTIC CAR DEALER THAT HAS BEEN AROUND FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS).

THERE WILL BE NO WARRANTY WITH IT.

I AM HAVING A LOCAL MECHANINC CHECK IT OVER TOMORROW MORNING. THE DEALER WAS A LITTLE HESTITANT TO LET THE MECHANIC (THEY KNOW EACHOTHER BY THE WAY) DRIVE IT AS IT IS CURRENTLY ON CONSIGNMENT (OWNED BY A FRIEND OF THE DEALER), BUT CONSENTED AS LONG AS HE WAS WITH HIM DURING THE DRIVE.

SERVICE RECORDS FROM NEW ARE NOT AVAILABLE (THE MECHANIC SAID ON THE PHONE THAT THE LAST FIVE YEARS ARE MORE IMPORTANT); THE JACK IS THERE AND THE SPARE TIRE AND THE OWNER'S MANUAL (WITHOUT THE "FOLDER"). HOWEVER, NO TOOLKIT.

UNKNOWN WHEN OR IF ANYTHING HAS BEEN REBUILT.

THE LAST TIME MAJOR SERVICE (VALVES, ETC.) WAS AT ABOUT 85 THOUSAND KILOMETRES, BUT THE DEALER DOESN'T KNOW EXACTLY WHEN THAT WAS DONE.

PROBABLY "NEVER" WINTER DRIVEN AND HAS BEEN IN STORAGE (IN THE DEALER) FOR 10 YEARS.

THE DEALER, INCLUDED IN THE ASKING PRICE, WILL INCLUDE A TIMING BELT CHANGE, AND CHECK ALL FLUIDS. MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS "RUNNING WELL". THE CAR WILL BE/IS CERTIFIED FOR SALE (ONTARIO CANADA).

THERE WAS A REPAINT OF THE DOORS AND OTHER LIGHT RUST SPOTS (DEALER SHOWED PICTURES) ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO. AGAIN, COSMETICALLY, THE CAR SEEMS FANTASTIC.

ANY AND ALL OPINIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED (AGAIN). ALSO, WOULD I BE BETTER WAITING FOR A NEWER 308 OR A 328 WITH LOWER MILEAGE (AND MY PREFERRED TAN INTERIOR?????).

AND IF ANYONE DIDN'T READ MY LAST POST FROM THE '91 TR POSSIBLE PURCHASE, THANKS TO ALL OF YOU. THIS IS A GREAT BOARD AND A GREAT GROUP OF PEOPLE!!!

REGARDS,
MICHAEL ROCHWERG
