I think the worst thing that will happen is you may melt as hot as they get on the inside. |

MD - I am not an owner of F cars yet but hopefully soon. For now drive BMW's but I am a fan of the Ferrari F1 team and of the cars. Fred The offer still stands. Yes it does look to be a wet weekend starting tomorrow. Just let me know with an email and I will send you my info if you go for it. Also I see that we both will be attending the dinner Saturday night of F1 weekend in Indy. I guess I will see you there if not before. Good luck. John |

Fred, after echoing the advice of others before me, I would also recommend that you have one other piece of equipment on board and use it all the time.... a good radar detector. Have a great trip and be safe. |

Guys, thanks again for all the feedback and John thankd for the offer, it would be a huge load off of my mind knowing there was someone close that I could get a hold of. The only thing is I talked with my sister this morning and she said they are expecting rain most of the weekend which seems to take a big part of the fun out of it if you ask me. I will keep an eye on it. You guys just about have me talked into it. I will let you know. Thanks again, this really is a great site with a great bunch of people. Fred |

Quote: Thats what i love about this site. Another Fcar owner will give you there number to call if you have a problem on a trip. I don't think tou see that bond with the YUGO owners. End Quote. BMW car club of America publishes an entire book of "friends of BMW" complete with addresses, phone numbers, and classifications as to whether the person provides tools, space, donuts and coffee, or just conversation. My name appears in that book. I am in the SF Bay Area, if you need me. |

I live way up north in Yellowknife Canada and 2-3 times a year make trips varying from 2,000 miles round trip (that's to the closest city) to 12,000 miles (YK to Toronto...last time at Christmas). I don't yet have an F-car and with all the stuff I usually have with me it wouldn't be practical, but, this is what I do... Pack some basic tools and parts...I base this on Murphy's Law that if you have it you won't need it but if you don't have it you'd wish you did. I go over the car from end to end topping up and/or changing all fluids and filters if they have not been done recently, checking condition of all belts and hoses, wheel bearings, brake shoes, wipers, rubber exhaust donuts, air pressure, etc . Sounds like a lot but it really only takes a couple of hours or so to visually check these things and gives you piece of mind...or ensures you fix what needs to be. Be sure your tires are up to snuff...nothing worse than having a flat in some God forsaken place. New tires can be cheap insurance. Following this and the stuff mentioned below I have only ever had one breakdown and that was a blown Voltage regulator...hard to check that one but now I carry an extra (Murphy's Law). I've driven to Calif 3 times (10,000 mi), Toronto about 12 times (12,000 mi), east coast US (15,000 mi)...all of them trouble free by just following normal preventative maintenance. Good luck and take your time to see the sights. Brian Brian |

I drove my 328 from Salt Lake City to Dallas the day I picked it up. Blew a water pump rolling into Denver. 5 days and $1700 later I was back on the road. If I was going to do it again, I'd load up on parts like Mark suggests and also locate every mechanic that works on Ferraris between my destinations. It IS a tough drive, especially in summer. Hot, noisy and cramped. But I'll never forget it. |

Drove to Las Vegas from Colorado and back in my '82; just take a cell phone. AAA card, lots of cash, tools, belts, spare water pump, spare fuse boxes, fire extingushier etc. If you have enough room in trunk for clothes you are not carrying enought spare parts. You wont actually NEED any of this stuff but it gives you a false sense of security. I do however find these to be the most exhausting cars ever to drive long distances (noise, heat, exhaust sucked in to cabin when top off etc.)but it will be a trip to remember!!! p.s. doing Albuquerque trip in Sept and Vegas trip again in October... |

I flew to LA last summer with a friend to pick up his '79 308 GTB. We drove it back to San Antonio. It only used one quart of oil, other than that, it was perfect. I did suffer a bout of severe dehydration from sitting in the greenhouse as we crossed the desert. |

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I will check the weather forcast for the weekend and if its clear maybe go for it. It doesn't seem like it would be much fun if it was storming the whole time. Good suggestion on the AAA. Thanks again. Fred |

Fred, when I bought my 308 QV over 2 years ago, my best friend and I drove it back 1000 miles home. It was one of the best road trips in my life. Sure I brought along some tools, coolant, oil and some belts....but I never needed any of them. The car seemed to like being out on the road. It was a grand time. |

Wow, beautiful car Ulf! Frederick I too am concerned about a long trip I have planned soon. Keep F dealers numbers handy that might be near your route. Maybe a membership to triple A might be in order if for nothing else - peace of mind. |

Fred, Do it! Have an adventure! Remember to take some pics for when you get back and regale us with a cool Ferrari story. Are you going to do it all in one day? Or stop and check out some sites? Carry a cell phone and make sure you AAA membership is current, you'll be fine. She'll get you there and back. Vincent. |

Don't worry if your car, is properly maintained. A month ago I came back from a 4800km (3000 miles round trip Sweden to Monaco). Did a few laps at Nurburgring as well and the car was not missing a beat. 308GTB QV -85 |

Hey guys am going from Indianaplois to hershey PA. on thursday, about an 1100 mile round trip. I have been wanting to take the car on this trip for several years. It is an 83 qv and I put about 5000 miles a year on it. It runs great and I feel it would make the trip no problem but the thought of it breaking down far from home would be in the back of my mind the whole trip. I mean what do you do when you break down in a Ferrari in the middle of the PA turnpike? Anyone take long trips in their Ferraris? Any feedback would be appreciated. Fred |
