Odometer fraud is probably more prevalent in Ferraris than we would like to know/admit. One must always be vigilant to odometer fraud. I am more concerned with someone driving around with the speedo sender unhooked (easy to unplug at the transmission)than a roll back. Ultimately it is the same, but unplug is harder to detect without good record keeping. I caught two while searching for a 328/355 last summer. They kept good records and that "painted them into the corner". There is usually a reason records are missing or have holes in their continuity...without them, you really need a good mechanic, one that you trust. | ||

I recently looked at a 355 spider with 9K on the ticker, Now I have a 360 with about 8K, and it was in ratty shape. The seat bolsters were all worn, the dash had shrunk, the center section was all worn. There was no way this car had only 9K, or 30K for that matter. So my advice is to just look at the condition of the car. I have heard that if you pull the fuse or dissable the odometer, that once reconected it will put the miles back. | ||

Kevin; I'd only fly the old plane if it had new avionics! The old stuff worked, but the new stuff is soo much better. Remember what happened to Dean Martin's son, fly into the mountains because a controller screwed up. With the new stuff, he'd have a much better idea of where he was, and it wouldn't have happened. my only comment here is that it just goes to show that there shouldn't be much premium for a car that wasn't driven much. I think it's the opposite -- you don't know what prob;lems are going to creep up!! TGhat brings me to my everl,asting airpplane theory. Would you rather fly a plan that was built in, say 1970 and been maintained properly with (obviously) no plane crashes or would you rather fly a plane built in 2003 (okay, 2000). There could still be some hiddnen glitches you don't know about. You can look at the averages but ultaimtely they don't tell you much. So my theory is that a properly maintained car, no mattter how many miles, is worth perhaps even more than one with fewer: it's a proven car and was well built -- especially one which was built by hand! | ||

Why bother rolling back the Od, when unpluging it is soooo easy!!!, we have a local dealer (dodgy used car salesman operating from home!!)who showed me how to do this in less than 30secs!!!!!!!! | ||

I was once told that on the older F-cars (Pre 1998 or so) that doing the OD back was simple as hell, but I do not really know. DrS | ||

Recently an aquaintance of mine sold his 348 to one of the local specialty car dealers, when he bought the car he took me for a ride and like most ferrari fanatics i noted and commented on the milage, he had the car for several years and put several thousand more miles on it, a couple weeks after he sold the car i see the car on ebay and the car has less milage than when i went for my ride, surprize, surprize, i emailed the owner and told him i saw his car on ebay and it had less milage than when he bought it, he said something about a misprint, misprint hell, in the ebay ad they had a pic of the odometer i had no idea odometer roll back was so prevalent and so easy to do, so buyers beware, after seeing this if i bought a car without complete records i would assume theres a reason |
