That makes me feel better. It must be the fun factor of an open top convertible. I went from Hero to Zero in a flick of a switch. |

I once had my SL parked outside a restaurant my wife and I were eating at and noticed a small crowd around it. Then to my dismay, a parent placed their child in it... alarm goes off, child starts crying, and even worse, he scuffs up my leather. Word to the wise, while going topless, be wary. |

I bought the convertible Mondial t in January but have only recently started using it due to life responsibilities plus enjoying other pleasures. Have noticed the same thing. I think people in general notice convertibles more due to the fun aspect. Of course easier to see and more friendly/inviting. One reaction seems to be "I love cars, but what is that". A convertible makes it easier to see and seems more inviting than a closed car. |

Hey, with the top down people were scoping out your wife, not the car. Well, maybe the car a little. With the top up it was only the car buffs looking since they couldn't see your wife. |

I've noticed the same thing. My conclusions are that it is either: 1. People interpret having your top (or windows) down as an invitation to gawk or try to communicate with you. The only times people have struck up converation with me or yelled at me the top was down. 2. I just notice it more when the top is down because I can better hear and see what's going on around me. |

I have found a f-car with the top down is more inviting to "lookers" because they can clearly see more of the car ( interior, etc..) then a hard top version. They can also look without having to touch a window or something else. I drove in a local road rally with many other makes a few weeks ago. We stopped at a scenic mountain overlook for a short time. Upon returning there was about 20 people around my car taking pictures as you described. The interesting part is I was parked between a Turbo 911 and a Testarossa. Obviously my car was the under achiever in horse power but to the novice the top down was much more appealing. Think of it this way - If you had 3 beautiful women standing in a line and only 1 was topless - which would you take pictures of to show your friends?? |

just goes to show that there REALLY is something INTERESTING 'under the top', once you get the clothes off, so to speak... |

I do not know if it is just a "Calfornia Thing", but I just returned from a 2 day 200 mile drive from the SF bay Area to the Napa Valley Wine Country in my 355 Spider. I was totally oblivious, but my wife noticed something kind of wierd: Every time the top was down a small (sometimes large) crowd would gather around the car. People took pictures, video taped, and even took pictures with their cell phone. One guy was laying on the ground in the street just to get the optimal angle. Everyone was very respectful as one time I could see them from the resturant through a "one way screen". They kept a safe distance from the car as they pointed and lurked at the interior. However, ANYTIME the top was up, it was like driving a Toyota Celica. Does the car really have that much more appeal/asthetics with the top down??? |
