they are now. the car was maintained by tom speer. when sheehan got the car, it had many mechanical problems. he advertised it as needing a complete overhaul. the car was brokered through the ferrari dealer in san antonio where it was supposed to be publicly auctioned by bexar county in san antonio. spillman had several ferraris, all of which sold for about half retail at "auction". the auction was held in private and the fact that nobody knew of the auction until it was over raised many suspisions. based on the auction of his personal belonging two weeks ago, these cars would have sold at twice retail. i don't think the cars would have brought this much, but i know they would have brought far more than they did. as an example, spillman had a destroyed engine on a stand from a 328 that he paid $100 for. the engine had seized and was not anywhere near repairable. at the auction, the engine sold for $700. it is on ebay now for over $1500. i have no idea why the auction had such strange results, but it should have been called the "spray paint something red or yellow, put a ferrari sticker on it, call it a FERRARI whatever and it would sell at twice what you could buy it new" auction. |

Excellent William! The story goes that they got it by way of Michael Sheehan after he obtained it at auction (sorry for any inaccuracies, but I pieced this together from two different people). The car was not finished, but the basic parts were there (Porsche transaxle, engine built by Carobu Engineering) they finished it out and did the final sorting (apparently an ongoing job...) and are getting over 500hp at the crank. |

the 308gtb racecar is the mel spillman car that was sold when he went to jail for stealing from several estates in san antonio, tx. i am surprised to see it still has the "prova" plates on it. |

My neighborhood has a number of Ferrari enthusiasts with a couple Daytonas, a 246, 355 GTS, Mondail T, 360 F1, Testarossa, 275, 330 and a few others....John Goodman (Goodman Racing) has a number of Ferrari race cars, shown at our neighborhood fair this weekend. Unfortunately the 308 that belongs in the trailer, was not running so they left it at the shop, they did bring a couple others....enjoy! Anyone recognize the 288 replica? Can you guess what the host car is/was? |
