Damn Matt, where have you been? I wondered when you were going to show up and put a stop to this again.

The 328 isn't bulletproof. The sheet metal and glass don't stand a chance against any decent weapon....

Huh? OH!

You meant "reliable". Well, mine has been pretty reliable in the context of a 16 year old car. I've owned it since October, put 6000+ miles on it and I've had the following issues:

broken clutch cable -- it just wore out

cracked distributor cover -- it ran OK, but wouldn't refire that bank after I washed the car. Dried it out and replaced the cover and spark plugs.

Bad AC thermostat switch -- ran a jumper for now, the switch is made of unobtanium. The car was laid up for a month while repairing incidental damage created while troubleshooting this problem, but I didn't have to pay for that repair.

Belt squeal -- tightened the belt.

So, in general, the car has needed some mechanical touchup, but it's never left me stranded. I think that all Fcars are more maintenance intensive than age comparable passenger cars, but once the bugs are shaken out are pretty reliable.

One huge advantage of the 328 is that it's actually pretty easy to work on at home.

Gary,
I went out and tried that. Took my 38 and shot 5 big holes in the side. I can assure you it is NOT bulletproof!
Miles really did not appear to make a difference :-)

Tillman,

I hear you. It's the same pattern with this guy. Check his other threads.

He must be in summer school or something.

Hey Matt,

He's asking questions, not giving advice. Relax. How else is he supposed to learn?

"Be aware of low mileage cars" Can you give me your interpretation of low mileage.

I recently spoke to a few mechanics who described
the 328 as " Bulletproof" Is this scenario accurate or are thet just exagerating.

Great car. Put 60000 miles on mine as daily driver and learning track car. Solid as a rock.

Gary,
There are always exceptions to the rule, but 308 QV's and 328's are generaly considered the best, in terms of general reliability. Low mileage would probably be considered under 20,000 miles for a 328. Regardless of few miles or many, and the great reputation not withstanding; stuff still "goes south" on them with great regularity if you drive it...and it is hard NOT to drive it, so I oblige, and drive my car almost everyday.... be prepared for repairs and regular maintanence either way. When stuff does go, the cars are common enough that parts seem pretty readily available and priced a bit better than the some of the other more recent models.

Find a copy of Forza magazine with the buyers guide to the 328, you should find that helpful.

He's not exagerating. The 328 is bulletproof.
Be aware of low milage cars, though. They suffer from all the traditional low milage problems, as all cars do.

Ciao
