Yes. (See below, adaptation of conventional 'box)
Computer control allows less wear 'cause the movement of clutch and shifter is not subject to driver error.

Matty: Yes, the car will roll on a hill if the throttle is not applied quickly/aggressively enough. Also, the car will go into neutral if one lets off the brake for 10 seconds or longer without any throttle input.

Andy: As was covered in the FORZA magazine article, the difference in the F1 box vs 6 speed box is that the F1 has heavier duty syncro rings in the lower gears as well as reinforced shift forks.

I too have a question on F1 gearboxes. Are there synchros in an F1 gearbox? If so, how does Ferrari overcome the wear that takes place when they are shifted quickly?

Will the F1 cars roll back on hills if not given gas quick enough like normal manual transmission cars do?

"nothing much to learn, just pull a lever"

Yep, you would think it would be this easy. However I'm starting to have doubts. I have a 2002 F1 and I think it's the best shifting F1 ever built. It shifts as smooth as butter. I've let numerous Ferrari owners drive my car. These guys could heel toe, double clutch with the best of them. But when they drive my F1 it's as though it's their first day of driver ed in high school. They literally butcher the shifting process. I can't believe it and they can't believe it's the same car. So, maybe it does take some talent to master the F1?

Lou,

Nothing, I was commenting on Rick's comment that 'you need to know how to drive them', which I do not understand.

And I say why???, nothing much to learn, just pull a lever.

I have two Fcars with "normal" trannies plus a 360F1 and enjoy them all. I actually am starting to tilt towards the F1 just to to enjoy the song of the TUBI through 3 perfect sequential double clutch downshifts.

Rick,

quote:

It actually works very nicely if you know how to drive it!

What do you mean?. All you have to do is pull the little levers, and the car should change gear. You should not have to know how to drive it.

That is the sad thing IMO about these paddle shifts, somebody with absolutely NO driving ability whatsoever can change gear. Thus you have lost part of the driving experience ...

And if you cannot just pull the levers when ever you want, then the system sucks.

Again F1 moves a Ferrari closer to the user dynamics of a fridge, ie. NO skill required, it is just an appliance.

Never buy one myself ... unless an Enzo or real F1 came attached.

As Car and Driver magazine eloquently stated when Ferrari's (with Magnetti Marelli) F1 gearbox debuted, it's a "manumatic", a computer controlled manual transmission with a conventional dry clutch.

This is opposed to an "automanual", which is an automatic transmission, with a torque converter (fluid power transfer) which can be shifted via buttons or levers controlled by the driver, and will hold the gear selected until the driver intervenes. This is Porsche's Tiptronic, among many others.

How does it work? Simplistically, there is a transmission computer (TCU), which interfaces with the engine ECU, and reads sensors for clutch position , absolute throttle position and change in throttle position (throttle velocity), engine rpm, transmission rpm, wheel speed, and driver's input via steering wheel paddles.

The TCU then utilizes hydraulic actuators to move the clutch throw out bearing to engage and disengage the clutch, the rate at which this engagement occurs, and moves the shift fingers to select the next gear. The TCU 'talks' to the ECU to blip the throttle on downshifts to synchronize the lower gear.

Hope this helps. Question? :-)

Ps, VW - Audi's new dual clutch transmission to be available in the Golf R32 and TT is perhaps the first "clean sheet" design of a manual transmission taking complete advantage of "manumatic" technology, as opposed to Ferrari's F1 system, which adapts a conventional manual to automated actuation.

Best regards,

Rob

Good point. The author's statement is little misleading since the F1 is the ONLY transmission available. As an aside I think he could be saying that redline comes so fast that the F1 is the best way to handle the power or that the Stradale is a "beast" and it's better to have both hands on the wheel? I don't know. The more I think about it, I wonder why he did say that the "F1 is essential"

J.D.: re: EVO article. With all due respect, and fairness, the F1 tranny is the ONLY way you can go in the stradale. The authors may have surmized it differently had there been a choice to excercise. Just my 2cents.

I'll try to answer your question:
How it actually works? About 3 years ago Forza Magazine explained what the F1 is and how it worked. It took 4 full pages of technical writing and technical drawings to acurately and fully explain how it works. I don't think anyone here can do as good a job explaining the F1. That's probably why you aren't getting responses.

Why do some people describe the F1 as an Automatic? There are 2 answers: One, As part of the F1 system there is a button labeled AUTO that you push and it turns the transmission into a full automatic roll. All you have to do is steer and give it gas. Two, and this is the difficult answer, it really depends on each individual's definition of "automatic" (kinda like Bill Clinton's definition of sex). The F1 will not upshift for you but will downshift automatically into 1st when the rpms go below 1350. So for some people that is enough to call it an automatic.

As an aside, if you are debating about getting an F1 read the EVO Magazine article comparing the Stradale and GT3 that's posted here. The F1 is the only way to go (according to the article)

I swear to God, this is about the silliest discussion yet here on FerrariChat. You wankers are all out-to-lunch, and all of you deserve the Assclown award. In fact, I will award it right after this text.

The Jefferson went well, but rained for three days! However, entry numbers were up,
and Jaguar were very pleased with their marketing effort.

BRIC also was excellent, entry numbers were down 5% but at 420 were still v.good.
Crowd was well up. John Surtees did an excellent job as Grand Marshall. Again, Jaguar were very happy with marketing efforts. They say they will do it again at both Summit and Road America.

Here to talk to the local Porsche Club, Monterey next week to drive the Collier Museum Ford GT 40.

Porsche want to do another "Rennsport" at Daytona, the end of April.

Oh, well. Have a great weekend, you wankettes!!

Actually yes, the title of this thread is F1 and I seem to have driven it off topic. Otherwise no, I wouldn't fit.
