The notification by email works very well.

Now I may be sure that I can give as good as I take, and return all the "compliments". :-)

Kenny, that's because I pruned all those messages before I announced to the public.

Well, that looks familiar: vBulletin is also used by the Scoobie forums: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/

I'm a fan of "Keep It Simple, Stupid", but at least it's not quite as bogged down as the EVO forum: http://forums.evolutionm.net/

But I still like the simplicity of the current format.

Does the new format require java or cookies?

well vbulletin definitely has more options...

thread preview ( you will not know how to live without once you use it for a few days), private messages, top down threads (I prefer it), etc.

I agree, I love this format so much!! I dont know anything about running forums, but if at all possible, i think it would be better, overall, to keep the same design.

Ahh, this explains it:

"Powered by: vBulletin Version 3.0.0 Beta 5"

Rob, you should know not to beta a beta! :-). Wait for the final release and just keep your color settings, its going to be a b*tch to iron out these bugs that you didn't create.

Rob, bugs:

On the front page /forum/index.php when clicking the "Last Post" on most (but not all) categories, i.e.; "Jonas's Toys" by Carbon McCoy, it brings up a page reading:

"No Thread specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the webmaster"

and if you click the "Collectables, Literature, & Models" section where its supposed to be, it states that,

"There have been no posts in the last 30 days in this forum.
Try using the controls below to search for any older posts that may exist."

Is this the final release of VB3? If not, why start testing on a beta? I upgraded fully to the 2.3.1 on my site but am/was awaiting the full public release that should be "bugless".

If you have any questions with Vbulletin feel free to shoot me an email or email me for my number.

LOL, just your famous animated GIF that's been on here a bunch of times.

Also, the Ferrari Phoney thread didn't have any text either. Just a test message.

The new board certainly is a bit slow.

It seems like you have to wait for ages before a new page appears.

Rob- I really like F-chat because of it's simplicity in a sea full of gee-gaw feature boards. Much like the Ferraris we come to talk about, this board is not full of non-essential crap, and very high in performance.

I feel like the new design and added weight of table code somewhat dilutes that.

Can you bring the interface closer to what F-chat currently has? I don't care to waste pixels on ratings and other junk.

The only change to F-chat I would like to see at all is the possability to change the (background?) colors of posts in a thread that you have not yet read.

That's it.

Be careful with change, you've got somethign very very good here already.

Just my thoughts, take at what they're worth :-)

Best!
Ben.

I'll probably remove them as I'll change some of the profile fields around and it will give everyone a clear start.

LOL Paul. It was 10 seconds, but I changed it to 2 seconds after Matt was helping me test. :-)

I deleted all the messages from the 5-6 people that helped me test the last few weeks, however, you still see the titles on the main page and post counts, although there really isn't anything there.

The board has much additional functionality, which is good and bad. The bad is that yes, it is overwhelming, but I think once everyone gets use to the new software they'll find it's easier to customize to their personal tastes and also focus on what's important to them.

When I officially open the new board and close the old one you'll have to register a new account and then I'll manually update your post count and registration date from the old account to new one.

A few more notes...

1) The entire board is database driven, which means that when you look at a page you're basically waiting on it to hit the database and bring back all the information. The old board would just update an HTML page if there was a change. So the HTML page will load quicker without the Db hit, but the new board won't get the write errors like you get on the old board and it will also handle the increasing volume of FC better. I will continue to optimize the new board and hopefully it will seem as fast or faster than the old board.

2) Hopefully we can allow personal customizations as to what order you want to view the threads.

3) Examples of the new functionality are rating users, rating posts, blocking users, email notification, creating polls, and the calendar.

I'm old school, I like newer messages on top. It's much easier when a thread gets big to just see the new additions rather than have to scroll for an hour. Who cares what the other forums do.

Looks pretty complex to me. I sort of like the old format, but I guess that is because I've become used to it. I'll give it a try.

We're still about 3-4 weeks away from switching over for good, but after some limited user testing I would like to open it up more. If you would like to help...

1) Go to http://ferrarichat.com/forum

2) Register

3) Post and try out any functionality you want.

4) Report bugs or suggestions as new threads in the Off Topics section.

A known bug is that quote replies don't place the users name, but numbers.

Also, not all the topics have been added yet.

Thank you,
rob

After this phase of testing all messages and user accounts will be deleted on the new board to start fresh. Of course everything on the old board will be saved into archives for future reference.
