I am really surprised about all of the experience people are having with Porsche drivers. I think perhaps it is important to make a distinction between "regular" Porsche owners and "enthusiast" Porsche owners. After all, a good part of the Porsche model line does cross over into "non-enthusiast" territory, as does BMW and Mercedes.

I have been a Porsche owner for the past 3 years and just graduated to a Ferrari, although I am keeping my Porsche. I certainly would wave to anybody that waves to me. I just tend not to intiate any waving, no matter what car I am in, although I do look, smile, and nod.

Hello.
I'm living in England, London to be exact.
Waving to other sportscar-owners even if it is Ferraris or not, isn't quite usual. But if you enter the "countryside" you may experience it.
But since most of you here seem to be located in the U.S. i have a question: What if you live in (or drives through) L.A. south central or NYC Bronx/Harlem. Do you wave...? :D

If someone says hello, you say hello back. The same goes for waving. You have to wave or at least acknowledge them some how. I always wave.

About thirty years ago, I saw an essay on "classic sports car waving etiquette".

The "wave" consists of raising one hand, palm outward, in silent salute -- Roman style ... or like the Queen on parade.

Some of the "rules" were things like "when two cars approach each other, the wave is initiated by the lesser of the two cars", and then acknowledged by an answering wave.

This rule could be a problem today: when a 365GTB encounters a 360, which is the "lesser of the two"?

But I think the point was that the "wave" is a passing way of saying, "nice car" -- so it isn't only for use between the same marque.

The problem is that you can't please everybody. If I didn't catch someone waving at me because I was focused during an "enthusiastic" drive or happened to be looking away would I be considered as an @sshole?

I wave at anybody that waves at me, including the children in the SUV's. I enjoy it that others go out of their way to make contact with a Ferrari. I also wave or give the thumbs up to other Ferraris.

Not too may other Ferraris in this area. I always wave at other sport car drivers (dont want them to think that Ferrari drivers are snobs). General observations: Corvette drivers always wave back very friendly; Porsche drivers ignore you whats up with that?

I always wave at another Ferrari, if no response I honk :-)
Question, if someone in a crappy car (e.g. a Yugo) gives you the thumbs up, she is complimenting your car, but what kind of body gesture are you suppose to do in return? Give a thumbs up back? Hell I have nothing good to say about a Yugo! Wave? Looks strange.... Do nothing? That's impolite....

Interesting P-car comments... If I don't get a hundred people rubber-necking and swerving on the road while driving its because my cloaking device must be on... The one thing I've noticed though is porsh owners don't even acknowledge me - EVEN IF I'M NEXT TO THEM AT A LIGHT!

It must be something about the marque that attracts a certain mentality / driver...

I wave. Usually get one back, except from the occasional 360 driver.

The past few weeks I've had a lot motorcycles rev their engines at me, I wave at those guys too. And once, I had some motorcycle cops pass in front of me when I was stopped and they revved their engines, pretty cool, but I didn't wave just gave them a nod. I think Ben has a picture of me following all three of them.

Paul, flipping the bird is giving someone the middle finger... That's how Bruce shows affection... :-)

i wave or beep at every Ferrari/Lamborghini i can; like others have mentioned, though, not always do i get a wave back... No biggie...

Although not yet an owner, i try to represent the marque in a positive light... Recently made a personal business acquaintance and we got to talkin' cars... Ended up talking Ferraris and blah blah blah; he's got my June Forza issue with the Jim Spiro-330 TRI/LM article... i told him to take his time, but that i needed it back by October so i can have it signed when i finally meet Jim Spiro...

Had a friend of a friend over to my apartment, showed him "the shelves" and even took him to Bentley of Long Island to show him the various Ferraris they usually have... Not many people know they have Ferrris in the lot... Sometimes, opening a Ferrari lover with little knowledge to more than what they're used to burns them to want to experience and learn more; much the same has been my experience here. :-)

I use ever opportunity to use the horns, they sound so good to me. It is hard to ignore the early Fiamm horns! I know they are loud but part of the Ferrari experience, to me. Most other Ferrari's acknowledge, but some are rather snooty,

I too wave at whatever trips my trigger. I answer good intentioned questions when asked, and try to be a good representative of the marque. I have not yet seen another Ferrari while driving mine....but hope to some day. There is no room for snobs and stuck-ups...after all...they couldn't be snobs if it weren't for the unsophisticated types like myself providing the contrast. They need a good roughing up....you know....muss the hair a bit....

I'll always wave at a Ferrari but have had few waves back. Could be that the 400i in silver is pretty low key or it could be that drivers of newer Ferraris may not know much about earlier models. Drivers of the older models almost always wave back.

I think the low key look pays off with police cars! :-)

If someone waves at me - I'm gonna wave back. I don't care what they drive! I will initiate a wave on my own at another Ferrari or other great/rare sports car. The guy with a well kept 83 Carrara would get my "hi ya wave", because he's a car lover. I would not wave to a BMW (unless I waved at). I feel no association with sports sedans.

Bottom line if somebody waves at me I'm waving back. I'd rather people thought "he's a happy idiot" rather then leave them thinking "what a stuck up a$$h@le" And never flip someone off - you have NO idea what they might be willing to do.

I wave or give up a thumbs up to any cool looking car. Gave a thumbs up to a new Maser coupe this Sunday and got a wave and a smile back.

I've been saved a couple times by flashing headlights and groups of motorcyclists on canyon roads giving a palm down/pushing down motion when coming in hot of a speed trap ahead.

I, too, wave (but don't honk) to other enthusiasts (which includes all Fs, but not just Fs). Wouldn't wave to a stock 3 series BMW sedan, but some nicely-riced? (help me here -- don't know the German equivalent) M3 (or even a stock M3) surely is a petrolhead.
I like the spirit of that Porsche "flashing", but IME that's the (unofficial) signal to the oncoming traffic that a police radar trap lies ahead for them -- people have saved me more than once doing that...

I wave and if possible, grab my clip on Scuderia Ferrari flag and wave it at the car...unless of course it is sticking out my window already. However, I dont like to honk...might scare a Ferrari driver if a Mustang comes up beside him and starts honking :-)

The S.F. flag is a fun toy, I got mine from www.ferraristuff.com!

I wave always to other F cars and the occasional classic soft top. If a young driver comes up along side me and is not looking to race but rather to admire the car I give a wave as well. I remember what it was like when I was 20 yrs old dreaming of driving my first Ferrari

I've only come across 2 Ferraris 'in the wild' while in mine. I waved to both. The first (360 Coupe) was a snob, but the 2nd (360 Sypder) was very friendly.

I also exchanged friendly waves with 2 Vipers, a Lotus, and ZERO Porsches.

If you have to wave at everyone, when do you find time to really drive the car? Might as well be in a parade float.:-) But seriously, I try to wave back or acknowledge people that I do see. I don't go out of the way looking into their windshields (can't see inside in most cases anyway). If they drive a cool car of any make, they get a wave or thumb up from me.

I searched the archives, didn't find anything, so I apologize in advance if this topic was covered.

My question: When you are driving your Ferrari, if you see another Ferrari, do you wave to the occupants?

Reason I ask, when I lived in the Bay Area, whenever I took my car out (both in general, and during the Monterey events happening this week), anytime another Ferrari was near us, they'd honk and wave.

Down here in Southern California, seems people are "above" waving at other drivers. They generally refuse to look over and acknowledge there's another Ferrari present.

I'm curious how other listers react.

And yes, even if a non-Ferrari driver waves, I acknowledge them
