More beginner questions:

If the broker I deal with stays cooperative, I should have a PPI of this 77 308 GTB in a week or so.

Questions thus:

Is it mandatory to be at the PPI?

If not, how do you find a trusty mechanic to be your eyes and judgment caller?
After all, pardon me to be sometimes paranoid, there are a lot of crooks out there?

Do you require a written PPI report with pictures?

Is there a warranty associated with a PPI?

If the car is a 77 with 7000 real miles then you will most likely have to change all fluids, belt replacement and various other small things. The tires if original will have to be changed, all totaled up you are probably going to have to spend 5-6K maybe more if you are planning to use the car. If you are planning to show it then you might not have to do a thing. The car should come with all documentation (if it really only has 7K) this means all books, dealer stamps and all service records. Without them you are paying too much for the car. I bought my 78 GTB 8 yrs ago and paid under 30K and received all books and records. Once I started driving it things started to break becuase it hadn't been used for a number of years with any regularity. Now that it gets driven more frequently I have less issues.
As for the PPI, any authorized dealer that you are planning to work with would be a good start.

I want to have someone who has extensive experience on older ferrari (pre-80), not the new kid on the block who just know how to read the conputer plug into the 360s...

Thank Crusing, but yours is a GTS. I want a GTB.
What big troubles?
Why do everyone say that a car with low miles has to have BIG troubles! If the car is driven regulary ie every month, what makes the car worse than a 50k miles?
Being an engineer, I see all the statement on this board about garage queen, and would like to understand better about it...

That is a lot for a 77 especially with so few miles. Looking at potentially big troubles. If you want an 85 with everything sorted and a real beauty I'd sell you mine for that price. Check my profile.

I just had a PPI done at F of Denver... Jeff, the service manager is a great guy, will answer all your questions (even if you ask the same ones over and over). I paid $315 including the compression test. They charge the hourly rate.

I agree with Sean, ALWAYS verify if the work has been done. Seller may say " car is well known to Dealer X". Call 'em (have the VIN #).
One car I looked at was supposedly well known to my local dealer (Lake Forest), who told me they had not seen the car since 1992!

BTW... just bought my first! 84 308QV... she is anxiously awaiting a spot on a truck!

Garage queen=trouble.

Rubber parts on cars that sit rot over time b/c of no use. Seals, belts, timing belts, hoses, etc. If you want to drive it, expect to replace that kind of stuff.

If you want a carb car you can drive frequently, look for a car with 30K miles or more. They're selling for between $20K and $28K right now, depending on condition and maintenance.

In regards to service history, ask the owner for the records and call the shop that is named on the receipt. They should have matching records.

Also, go to www.ferrariclub.com. It's the NW region web site. Go to the FAQ and read the section on buying your first 308. Lots of good info.

As far as PPI, well, where do you live?

Also, what is the way to verify if all schedule maintenance has actually been done on the car? Who to contact? FNA, Ferrari in Italy? Who would have all this information?

This should help the novice I am not to screw up too bad...

After getting my FCA membership, I am ready to do a PPI on a 308 (1st Fcar purchase).
Any recommandations as far as what to look for, and who to use to get a good complete inspection (including compression - leak-down test)? Any price I should expect? Any recommandation as far as F dealer or certified mechanic?
The car was a garage queen 77 308 with less than 7000 miles from its original owner...
$35k is the price. Does that sounds reasonnable?
Thanks in advance,
