"So what is the source/cause of the squeeking? "

When you use the brakes hard enough to put some real heat in the pad the surface between the pad and the rotor itself goes through some interesting chemical reactions. One of the results of this is a kind of glazing (thin amourphous layer) on the surface of the pad. This layer has indifferent frictional properties, at low pressure levels it is happy to act as a lubricant slipping across the surface of the rotor, and with the right conditions, bite, slip, bite, slip at thousands of osciliations per scond. This is the dreaded squeek. At higher pressure levels the pad works as designed because the amorphous layer is held tightly to the rotor and cannot vibrate.

The reason the antisqueek aplications to the back of the pad don't work all that well is that the backing plate is vibrating in tensional modes, Sort of like a cymbal.

Now if you want to get rid of this problem and keep the problem from comming back, you have only two real choices: 1) take the car to the track and wear through the glased layer rapidly, 2) don't brake on the street hard enough to build up real heat in the pad (yeah, right....).

I did a google search on squeeking brakes and found a (basically) unlimited number of hits. In addition to the above, they also mention that a glaze can build up on the rotor as well as the pads. Many suggest simply living with the problems, several suggested a track day of several repeated stops from high velocities at a safe location; a couple suggested removing the pads and sanding the glaze off them. One went so far as to blame the lack of asbestos for the squeek.

So what is the source/cause of the squeeking?

It is the pad vibrating on the pin that runs though it?

Caliper to pad/ pistons to pad/ rotor issues... what is rubbing and squeeking?

To be clear the squeeking occurs when you are not on the brakes and goes away when you push the brake pedal.
Thanks for the tips.

My 355 does exactly the same occasionally. Complained to the dealer, they did something at the yearly service, now it's gradually coming back.
Nothing as bad as racing disks/pads on challenge cars though, these sound really embarrassing.
Guess that's yet another thing we have to put up with ...

My 355 brakes squeeked terribly.
My 360 " " not at all.
My 575 " " squeeks approx every 10th time usually when lightly pressed. The dealer tried some diff pads-worked for a week only.
So now I accept it and when it happens I look around at the other cars, accusingly.

I had that on my 308QV as a semi-permanent problem after taking the car out on the track. I hated it... made it sound like a cheap car. One guy's advice was that I need to just step on the brakes harder!

Anyway, I finally fixed it for good several years ago by going to Porterfield carbon-kevlar R4-S brake pads. They do make them for 355's ($89/pair) and 360's ($169/pair) also. www.porterfield-brakes.com

I don't have any affiliation with them, just a happy customer.

Sometimes, braking really hard a few times get rid of the squeak. Efficient brakes always make noise.

Ferodo + Brembo = squeaks..

Thats what I use (yeah, on my Jag). Not sure what 355's use stock. Any setup using Ferodos I've seen squeak. Anti-squeal gel to prevent vibration doesn't help too much, but its still a difference. Gentle foot pressure on my brakes results in the squeaking for me, but, I'm a late braker anyway, so just a bit more pressure on the pedal and it goes away.

My suggestion would be to learn to live with it or else machining and changing out components and trying quick fixes may be more trouble than its worth. :-)

Mine does the same thing. I wrote in to the F-Chat too about this about a year ago. I got the response that all F- brakes squeak. Something in the lines of Formula Race car brakes squeak, all high performance car brakes squeak. Just have to live with it I guess. I know some owners took in to the shop to get the rotors smoothed out or something to that effect. I just got used to it.

My 355 has developed a very iritating rear squeek at low speeds. Lightly touching the brake peddle stops it until you release. It seems to be worse when slowly going around a corner. Does this sound familiar to anyone ? Any idea how to solve ?
