Well fellow Ferrarists; It is sad that I am reviving this thread to inform you of another R.I.P Ferrari. During our last "Bay Area Rally" it was my pleasure to meet Tony Ta. Tony showed up for the rally driving his Lambo Countach. Tony also owns a Testarossa.

Tony decided to have the 30,000 mile major performed and yesterday picked up his car to drive home. During the drive home the Testarossa caught fire and was completely burnt up. According to Tony, "he barely made it out of the car." He is hopping mad.

The service was performed by Cammisa Motor Car Co. of Burlingame, CA. I personally do not know of their quality of service. However, I do not believe I will be visiting them soon for service on my 348.

Tony says that the remains are at Scotty's tow yard in Freemont, CA. I will try to take pictures and post them if possible.

R.I.P Tony's Testarossa. :(

I've been accused of just loosing my head over a car but that would have been the literal intrepretation of it.

If that car was a spider, I would have been topless.

If if ever got a spider (F355 SF?) I'd have a removable rollbar for it. On while driving, off for showoff & shine.

Do you think you and your passenger would have fared as well if you were in a spider (no roll bar)?

Larry,
good to see you are well.
Makes you think a lot of things. Great to see that the cabin is holding on.
That should make a nice track car if the chassis is not bend. Think about buying it back from the insurance. If you don't want it, let me know how much they assess the remains for and I will buy it at a reasonable price.

I have a good detailer that can get these scratches out.... :-)))
I would also be interested on how the insurance is going to treat this. Maybe you can keep us all posted here.

Hey, time to buy one of these Challenge or Special cars. Loot at the one on eBay with the challenge race package. They are desperate now and lowered the price down to where it should be.

My insurance Co. 21st Centry just called and declared it a "Total Loss".

I did ask as to how the payoff on this was arrived at and it is probably a concensus of replacement values of like ccar from F-Car dealers. The Adjuster said these are special vehicles and the KBB does not have or apply on these. She did say the CPI guide guides to the Dealers for replacement value.

I'm sure that I'll have to haggle over it some but at least I'm alive to do that.

not to focus on just $ and cents but how did things work out as far as insurance settlement in order to get a replacement, We have had several discussions on insurance companies and which co's are better but to me you only find out when something like this happens.

THANKS ! all you guys.

Well you can take the Larry out of the Ferrari... But you can't take the Ferrari out of Larry.

It might take a while to replace her.

Larry,
All I can say is "Ouch!". You're okay so you can get another Ferrari someday. It's good to have a solid car for when the worst happens. I've been in a roll-over, makes me a bit nervous about riding in a convertible.

Nissan Maxima four door sports car? NOT!

Hi Larry,

The pictures brought tears to my eyes. However, the pony gave her life to save yours and Marks. I'm very happy about that. Let me know when you're ready to get back in the saddle. We can go out in the 355 or the p-car.

Man, sorry to hear about your car, Larry.

It was a beautiful 348. I am glad you are ok, hopefully you'll be back in the saddle soon.

Perhaps with a 355 or 360 :)

Larry, I'm so sorry to hear about your accident. I'm glad you're both are ok, that is of course what is most important. The pictures of your beautiful car made me want to cry. I'm not sure how I would react if this happened to me, I go ballistic if another car even parks to close to mine. Hopefully you will be able to find a suitable replacement for her soon. I just drove that road last Sunday for a weekend ride myself. I'm so aware of my own driving when taking on the curves of the Santa Cruz Mountains, that you don't realize how easy it is for someone else to take you out. I hope the other car at least stopped. Take care, Tom

Larry,
I'm so glad you're OK and am amazed at how S/N #89568 held together through such an incredible collision. How sad to see such a beautiful 348 is no longer. Makes me want to cry.

I had no idea ferraris could be that safe. Good thing you guys are ok. If you have a ferrari and then lose it do you get ferrari withdrawl? (i would imagine you do, and that its pretty bad)

Were there any witnesses? I hope that the Maxima driver admitted fault & not trying to sue you. Some people are freaks & just because you HAD a Ferrari will give then a right to sue, thinking they profit of their own mistake. Good to see that you & your friend survived. This is a testament that Ferrari builds a safe cars.

Sorry about your car. Glad that both the occupants are OK. I am getting my 1994 (red/cream)348 TS in a few weeks and it is reassuring to know that they can take such a beating, God forbid they need to.

I hope you find another replacement soon. Take care.

The main thing is that no one was seriously hurt. On a lighter note, a bit of 'Bondo', bit of paint here and there; hey presto, Ferrari for sale on EBAY !

Thank goodness you're alright. It's so sad to see a little prancing horse die, but in the context of it saving your life it doesn't really matter. A car that lucky would make a great race car... Take care.

Lawrence, Sorry for your loss but it could have been your lives. Glad you guys are ok and it is amazing to see how the cabin area of the 348 held up around you guys and protected you. All in all from what you described that 348 still looks pretty good.

*- - R-I-P -*
*- S/N #89568 -*

*------------------- *

S/N #89568 died on Thursday, 10/18/01, 4:17 PM from collision and severe rollover.
She was born on 03/26/91.
She is survived by her owner (Larry) and guest passenger (Mark).

While on a casual drive near Fenton, California in the costal Redwoods, on a 2 lane highway we were sideswiped by a 200 Nissan Maxima. The Maxima appearently crossed over the double yellow going into a slight uphill turn, we were heading slightly downhill. After the initial impact S/N 89568 ricocheted off a very large redwood tree at such angle as to convert forward motion to centrifical-spinning (rollover) motion, spinning maybe 6 times before comming to rest 100 feet down a ravine. The 8-10 seconds to the bottom felt like 20 minutes in a very large tumble dryer. We did finally stop upright.

The tree saved the lives of Larry and Mark because if it was not exactly where it was the impact would have been head-on or, if it was not there we would have gone ballistic (airborne) into the canyon. In either case it would have been Fatal for both! I have chrilden & family and Mark has 3 young children & family. A treetrunk about 5 foot high is what stopped the downhill slide. Directly past that treetrunk another dropoff would have taken us down probably another 150 feet to the floor of the ravine.

Yes, Enzo was looking out or us. The car is demolished but the cabin protected us even with the Targa-Top off. The Ferrari seats side bolsters will keep you in place but at the price of a substantial body beating. I would have rather taken on Mike Tyson & Evander Hollyfield at the same time. Mark went by paramedic to the hospital for preventative X-rays.

All three participants of this event are going to be just fine. Lot's of sores, bruses & some superficial abrasions as a reminder.

Once again our Firemen and Paramedics were hero's and promptly arrived to the location with maybe 6 varieties of emergency vehicles. Mark had to be secured to a stretcher for about 25 feet up the side of the embankment(My extreme thanks!)

It turned out to be a very long day but given the alternative I was OK with that.

I'll talk to Enzo....OK, Mr. Ferrari... Il Commendatore as to a 2nd chance to serve as a custodian to one his children afterall I did good by her until S/N 89568 made the ultimate sacrifice. It just might take a while to get back in the saddle of the next Cavallino. But It will happen, goes to that "Soul" thing again and my "non-human soul-mate" has gone.

Also, PLEASE-PLEASE be carefull while prancing your horses, keep any and all racing and overly aggressive driving to a real track the alternatives are JUST NOT WORTH IT!

SN # 89568 was the perfect (well almost) 348TS, she ran strong, looked real sexy, sang a beautiful song and cuddled me real emotionally. I'll miss her individual charm and personality.

Grazie,

>> Larry
