Caps get stolen so why bother? I've seen ones that just spin until you use this particular key to remove it, those are a good idea but not worth the trouble, I just stick with generic caps. |

Lens, My M3 is an '02, so you should be able to find this part. BTW I have seen lots of other Ferraris with these caps incl a 288 GTO. |

The ones I posted were the closest I'd seen. Below are the caps that actually came with my car.

Dan, Checked out page 57. I see what you mean, they're not like the ones Mike posted at all. It probably doesn't matter, but is your M3 an '03? Sorry to miss you this weekend; Reading is a possibility for next year. Thanks. |

Thanks Malcolm. Glad you are part of the board! So it sounds as if my caps were original and escaped being changed over for the black ones during prep. Correct? I loosen and tighten them often to make sure they dont seize. Lens the caps shown by Mike are not at all like mine (or the others I've seen). See the pics on page 57 of Original Ferrari V8 for examples. BTW my new M3 has identical caps so I bet you could get some at a BMW dealer. Dan |

I've heard about metal, particularly aluminum, caps seizing. Dan, did you lose points at Cavallino with the bulge type caps? Thanks for the link, Mike. |

Dan, I joined Ferrari (Maranello Concessionaires) in 1973 as a qualified technician, then working on Dino's, Daytonas and everything backwards from there, the newest car on the horizon was the 365 Boxer, I later took on the roll as roadtester, from there I progressed to workshop foreman. In the mid eighties I was promoted to workshop manager and then moved on to run our dealership as the Gereral Service Manager. I then spent a couple of years doing special projects, one of which was building our 48 bay service centre. I am now working with Ferrari UK as Parts Technical Support Manager. I have spent over 30 years with Ferrari and had many good times, including meeting lots of the older Ferrari people in Italy including Enzo himself. MW |

Thanks Malcolm, What was your background/position back then with Ferrari. Sounds like you have years of experience with Ferraris. Would love to hear a bit of it! Dan |

Daniel, You are quite right, in the 70's and 80's Ferrari use to fit metal valve caps, unfortunately after about 12,000 miles the reaction (electrolyse) between the steel cap and the aluminium caused problems when trying to remove the caps (the valve would snap) So when we were preparing a new car for a customer we would remove the metal caps and replace them with the black rubber caps. Back in the seventies I use to be a judge in the UK Ferrari concours events and knowing what I new I wouldn't deduct points for metal caps. MW |

Lens, Based on my experience prepping my car and showing it at Cavallino, any basic black cap will do and wont cause a point deduction- but those logo caps will be 1/2 point off. The question I would have to Malcolm (Ferrari UK)is this: I have seen several 328s including one with 300 miles, one in Ferrari V8 book and mine with the same simple valve stem caps that are metal and have a small hemispheric bulge on top. Is it possible that those too may be original and that is just what Ferrari had on the shelf at the time? At Cavallino the judges and i agreed to disagree on this subject. |

Guys, the original caps are no longer available, as Malcolm pointed out. (I already asked Jeff at Ferrari UK.) I'm currently using the logo caps. Guess Ill just have to take the one original I have and visit tires shops? |

My 328 came with the logo stem caps, but they're brushed instead of polished. I think they look better since they match the rims, but I have never seen them for sale. Everyone seems to sell the polished version. Has anyone ever seen these? I'm assuming I'm on borrowed time, and it's only a matter of "when" not "if" I find one or more missing some day. |

Steve, Many thanks for correcting me, anyway if it is tire valve caps we are talking about, the original caps as you describe are no longer available - maybe try you local tire warehouse for something similar. MW |

I just bought some logo'd caps for my 328 GTS which look cool - I have seen them on a 512bb. Have a look at http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2432038293&category=14771&rd=1#ebayphotohosting

Malcolm -- I think Len is looking for the black WHEEL valve stem caps (they don't get shown separately in the SPCs) -- a sort of 4-fluted design with a small hemisphere on top and an internal o-ring? Wouldn't mind getting a few myself next time I place an order with you -- is there a separate F PN for it? |

I'm curious to know why you want the old black valve stem oil seals, they were replaced with the later white seals (#141565), because they last longer than the black ones. MW |
