I have driven my TR just about everyday for the last month and she just loves it. I'll take it anywhere.

In fact when the 348tb first came out in 1989 it was faster around the Ferrari test track than the TR . The TR is a Grand Touring car not a sports car.

Go with your heart!
If you envy the power of the TR go that way, if you want a comfortable ride with less thrills, go 355. The problem with the GTS roof behind the seat is LEGROOM!

Pisses me off on the TS. I either have to leave the roof home and pray (and I am not a good praying man) or go with the roof on. Still have not been able to find that foldable top that works whole driving!

I believe the 512 TR is the better car. More of everything. More power, more cylinders, more a Ferrari (Enzo loved the V12s)and more "exotic". How often do you see a TR and how often do you see a 355. I was driving a Testarossa for a while daily and they are perfectly capable of a daily driver, as I believe all Ferraris are.

But again, that would be my choice.

if i'm going to use the car daily, is a 355 a wiser choice?

You must be a very good driver. I was referring to the SAME driver in both cars. When the 355 came out in late 94, I recall the same factory driver was almost 2 seconds faster than his best 512TR lap at Fiorano.

at Lime Rock which is a twisty road course I was doing 1:03:8 with my 512TR, the fastest 355 Challenge cars were doing 1:00:00. the slowest ones were well behind me. No road 355 ever got by me :)
The raw power of the flat 12 is just too much for the 355. Even a twisty track is just drag zones & brakes zones & in the drag zones u need a viper to beat a 512TR

I would think that a 355 in CAPABLE hands on a moderately twisty road course is faster than a 512TR driven by the same person. Substitute a 360 to the 355 and I would wager money on it.

I own a 355 and have a friend who owns a 512 tr. The 512 is more powerful and faster. The 355 is easier to drive and handels a little bit better. Unless you are looking for a really fast car, I would take the 355.

I was recently in the same position and chose the TR. My decision was based several items. The biggest factor was that I liked the power of the TR. With the convertible 355s I tested I could not get in a comfortable driving position as I could not adjust the backward tilt of the seat sufficiently due to the top mechanism. ( I am 6 feet tall) I don't know if storage of the top in a GTS presents the same problem. If you plan on driving it with the top stored behind the seat I would drive it this way and see if it is comfortable. I was also concerned about resale of the 355 compared to the 94 TR I purchased but this is anyone's guess. It is too soon for me to judge the TR's reliability. However, at 6700 rpm I seem to loss power as if the rev limiter is kicking in. One mechanic opined that the problem may be more related to the inaccuracy of the tack than a real problem. I will probably post on the technical part of this forum for other thoughts.

I think the 512TR is a more fun car to drive, but the 355 is definitely more comfortable and easier to drive. By now a 95 should have had the problems corrected (namely oil leakage, big surprise with a Ferrari) and it is the best performing and sounding of the 355s. The big thing is to make sure that it has been corrected by a dealership. The TR will depreciate less. I guess it depends on what you want out of it, they're very different cars. If I had one Ferrari (as if that isn't enough) I would rather have the TR.

92 is a 512TR. If the other is a 95 355 then definately get the 512TR. SOme people here posted about problems with the 1st year 355

I have a 93 512TR, I bought from Shelton in Fla. I had a mechanic look over the car 7 he said it was in good shape except for a few small problems that were easy to fix. So I bought the car.
She has ungodly power, the brakes r good for the road, the handling is good but the 355 probably handles better just cus its a bit smaller.
I track my car as often as possible & I gleefully blast 355 Challenege cars into the weeds on the straights with the nearly 500 hp I have now. They can catch me in braking zones but I'm getting new brakes to fix that.
I think 512TR prices r depressed right now & its beyond me why people would settle for a V8 when they can have a nice powerful 12 :)

Steve,

I had a 89Tr for two years and had a great time with it and just traded in with a 97 F355. As far as reliability there is no questions in my mind the 355 is more reliable car. While i had the TR i must have spend over $12,000 on repairs alone and that does not include regular maintanance. Again i might have just had bad luck but would take a 355 over TR all day.

Depends on your personality. The TR is raw power the 355 is way more refined. Reliabilty anyone's guess. Drive a lot I bet they are close. Drive average, the 355 is probably more reliable. Hanger queen, they both will drain you but the TR will drain you more. The TR needs to be driven regularly or tracked hard or else the 12 cylinders seem to go to sleep and problems surface. Many on this site say stay away from the 1995 355s, I am sure you will hear from them. Personally, I think its no choice, the cars are so different, the 51TR is the way to go in my book.

In either case, make sure an independent mechanic checks out the car - friendly dealer or not a lot of stuff could happen to the car the dealer knows nothing about. Service records do not tell everything -just read some of the stories on this site to learn that. And if it needs service before the purchase, I recommend you get a discount in price and then have someone else do the service -- too easy to skimp on things internally that you will never see.

What year are you looking at & how much do you want to spend?

I have always wanted to buy a Tr and now has come the time for me to buy one and all I get from this (friendly) ferrari dealer is how better the 355 is.I intend to drive the car as much as possible (i m not buying a car to stock it in the garage, no way!!) . i have no preferences when it comes to the looks of the two cars, but realiability is mostly my concern.any comments will be gladly appreciated-thank you
