here is a suggestion:
given that you plan to use this as a daily driver, why put grocery store miles on an arguably rarer and more valuable beast like the 512m, when for most commuting and other reqs the much less costly and considerably more replaceable 512tr can be had for at least 30% less money?

WillH - There was one (F512M engine) for sale here in the Bay Area some time ago, I saw and touched it for myself! I think the guy wanted $15k (he has 3 F512M's)

That would be even better! Of course, with the low weight of your car it must already be quicker than just about anything short of an Enzo. Some day I want to see you run that in person! I will keep my ears/eyes open for an M engine. Let us know where/when you be running, especially if it is here in Florida. Enjoy the ride!!

William:

Not to be argumentative but the 512TR and the M are not very close. I have owned both and I have a good friend with a nicely modded 512TR with Tubi, Test Pipes and K&Ns etc. His car is very, very fast(about as quick as my 550). However, the M is alot faster. Also, there are more internal engine and suspension differences than you mentioned. Besides the Conrods made of Titanium, the cyliders are new with a higher compression ratio(10.4:1 vs. 10.0:1 if memory serves), the crankshaft alone is 7.5 kg lighter in the M so it revs MUCH faster, the springs are much stiffer and the car weighs 50 lbs less. It takes on a very different character from the TR. While I love the 512TR the M is a different beast.

512TR & 512M are very close. the M has titanium con rods so it revs a little more, it has maybe 30 more hp & maybe 30# less weight. of course you have the cosmetic differences in new (ugly) wheels, covered headlights Vs pop ups & different tailinghts. other than that its the same car. For a lot less $

You can easily make up the power difference by installing a tubi & a few other small mods

Didn't Phil Hill do a complete 512TR road test for R&T some years ago. I believe it showed 4.7 to 60 and a 1/4 in the mid 12's.

If you want something for road & track I would suggest a 512TR, they are very reasonably priced now and they have hellacious performance. With a good set of aftermarket brakes and a few minor mods you can be nipping at the heals of the fastest 355 challenge cars :-) Not as much $ as a 512M & IMO better looking. Cheaper to fix than an F40 also

I like the F40 very much also, I have two 512TRs now. 1 thing to consider about the F40 is the price of fixing the body work as well as buying replacement Carbon fiber parts, Not cheap at all. its a hell of a car but you better have a fat wallet

I'AM MAINLY FOCUSING ON THE CHIP AND EXHAUST MODIFICATIONS. THE REASON I'M ASKING IS I AM AT A CROSSROAD AS TO PURCHASE A 512M NOW OR WAIT ANOTHER YEAR OR TWO A PURCHASE AN F40.
I LOVE THE FEEL OF EVERY RIPPLE IN THE ROAD.
I CURRENTLY USE MY 86 TR AS MY DAILY DRIVER,BUT I AM JUST LOOKING FOR MORE. I DO THE USUAL TRACK EVENTS AS WELL

I know a guy here in Miami who has a twin turbo Haman 512M. I believe he has now removed the twin turbos. The car may be for sale. He told me it has around 700 hp

I have the Koenig Chip, Tubi Exhaust, Test Pipes and K&N filters. All of the mods add up but there is no doubt that the Koenig chip made the biggest difference. I have a GTECHPRO competition model and have used it only once in the M briefly. As I said in my other post I may loan the car to one of the magazines for a proper road test(if they are interested.) I would like to satisfy my own curiosity as well. I know the M will definitely destroy my 550 Maranello, especially over 100mph. Above 140 the car really comes on cam and the forward thrust is earth shattering. Back to the Gtech test... I did a very gentle clutch engagement...saw 1/4 mile as 12.4@119mph. I am sure that could be easily surpassed. Again though, the real strength of the M is at speeds over 100. Koenig is definitely the real deal IMHO. They advertise something like +35hp but if that is accurate it is more likely at the rear wheels. I suspect more like 60 at the crank. And to hear that car at 7,800 rpm is glorious, especially with no cats.

HAS ANYBODY DONE THE KOENIG OR HAMANN MODIFICATIONS TO THE 512M AND IF SO WHAT KIND OF PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT ARE YOU SEEING? 1/4 MILE TIMES?
