So Ferrari is putting the Maranello on the track? Great! Hello to the Viper, Corvette, & Porsche. |

I spoke with someone close to the customer racing director at Ferrari recently. I believe that the 550 effort was basically a privateer effort by the ProDrive team and the Rafanelli team. Now, however, the 575 GTC is truely a factory developed racer and should be even more competitive. Ferrari now appears to understand the importance of the ALMS series for sportscar racing. The 360GT which is also a factory sponsored effort(albeit run by FOW)has been very successful in GranAm. In fact it won again yesterday with Cort Wagner and Brent Martini winning comfortably over a 911GT3 driven by a factory Porsche driver. I understand from what I was told that the 575GTC will be significantly quicker than the ProDrive cars currently running which should give the Vette team some restless nights. |

sorry if this is a stupid question, but why would you build a race car based on a $230K ferrari instead of something based on a $100K porsche or whatever? it's not like the 550s are generally trouncing the 996s at the races, right? it seems like a needlessly expensive exercise? do they get some gigantic benefit out of the 550 base that you couldn't get out of the 996 base? i assume they basically rip the car apart and replace a TON of stuff, so if you're gonna spend a ton of money in parts and time to modify whatever they use, so that extra $100K or whatnot is a material investment. does ferrari support these teams with discounts or whatnot to make it more financially rational? or are the team owners just die-hard fans of marquee X or marquee Y and they therefore stick with X or Y? doody. |

the teams have been developing the 550 racers for years now. Unless ferrari coughs up some $ they dont have a lot of motivation to scrap alll their work & start on a 575 |

The 575M is a factory modified version of what you drive. The racing Maranellos are basically really modifed 550s too... BTW... In case you were wondering, it's a 6.0L motor... but yeah, they use the 550 name. http://www.ferrari.com/cgi-bin/fworld.dll/ferrariworld/scripts/gt/production/cars_oggi_intro.jsp?title=575_GTC&carIdx=0 |

I was watched the 550 win a race. Why do they use a 550 and not the newer 575?
