The problem with the Mercedes SL around here is that it's mostly driven by older women.

Billy is right!

I had a mercedes SL not long ago as well.. it was the perfect car for NYC - sporty, flawless reliable top up/down like fine machinery, very quiet and comfortable..ladies loved it...I HATED IT!..I felt like a grampa driving it... I thought, boy this woudl be a nice car ...like WHEN I AM 80 YEARS OLD..it was like driving a living room sofa on wheels. I am in the city so I don't get to drive every day so when I get in my ride -- I want an experience! -- comfort, perdictability -- I can get that at home..on the road, I want excitement. The Ferrari can tell your spine where every pothole and steel plate is located in Manhattan.

From what I hear they're having downforce problems with the rear end of the 360 on the track and Ferrari says no spoilers because of their whole aerodynamic quest with the 360.

Frank is most certainly talking about the v8 M3s. A stock M3 should be a pace car for a 360. However, a 360 is not the greatest track car. It may be the most beautiful and most desired but from many an experience, the 360 routinely gets beat. Sad actually, but Vipers, ZO6s, Porsches and NSXs are all tough comp. Those pesky NSXs are amazing on a road course. They usually kill everyone in all the events I've been a part of.

We like more members on our Long Island meet.

Ferrari beat by a BMW? It'll be a dark day. It could be people not wanting to wreck a $200,000 car.

Chasing the dragon Frank? Sorry, I just saw the movie "From Hell" and wanted to use that line. :)

Frank,
There is no way in the world that a stock M3 will beat a stock 360 on any track given equally qualified drivers. Not even close.I have both of those cars.
I think you may be thinking of the M3-v8's that have been racing on the circuit this year. If not, I would appreciate some reference to prove your point.

Frank,

Are you talking about a stock M3 (stock and not a race car) against a 360? What were the circumstances? Was the driver of the 360 a newbie?

It all depends heavily on the driver of the car. There's a lady here in Seattle who track her Volvo wagon all the time. I've seen her lap a lot of Porsches and Ferraris. There's no substitute for experience.

As for owning a Ferrari in the city, nothing is better. I have two and a lotus, and they all have 18 in rims and not one bend in them. And I drive them all the time. M3 might be fast but speed isn't everything. It's like driving your father's oldsmobile. Go with the 355 you will not regret it. That means we will have an extra member on our annual Long Island meet.

Martin, I have no dog in this fight as I own neither a 360 nor a M3. But, the M3 is faster than a 360 at the track, no contesto. Go see for yourself. I go to 3 to 4 track events per year and I see all kinds of cars running. It's not unusual for a car with good specs in a magazine to get whipped soundly by what appears to be a lesser car. Its the total package that counts on the track. Not just 0-60, 1/4 mile and skid pad numbers. Though they're great to talk about over a beer , they mean very little on the track.

Leo-
Have both a 360 and '01 M3.The M3 is great fun and a great daily driver BUT IT AIN"T NO FERRARI!!
Frank the M3 (E46) is fast but not close to the 360.Neither 0-60 or st 1/4 or 0-100.
Don't know of any comparisons on the track but it would be no contesto.

Hi Leo,

First of all ...c'mon you are from Brooklyn..do and get what ever you want!! I and a informal group of others that keep Ferraris in NYC would love for you to join our insane asylum. Anyone (and many do) can have a BMW or Porsche in the city and they are great cars and most pratical for NYC...but then again Ferrari is special and driving one up Park Ave, down fith or onthe belt or van wyck (not in traffic) is really something else..this is not a car or a city for wimps and the faint of heart need not apply but enjoy what you want..NYC right now is a place where people are making all kinds of excuses for not enjoying what they want out of life. I can assist you with local mechanics and other local knowledge. You have to have the passion though. I always feel that if you have to ask the question "should I get a Ferrari?" then you shouldn't..it really works best when it is an addiction..you have to have it even though you know full well it muy ruin your life in the process. Signed - Ferrari Junkie in NYC.

I think owning a ferrari & keepin it in a city is a bad idea. These cars LOVE to run. Now if u take her to the nearby racetracks for some excercise occasionally, thats a different story

If price and practicality are your main concerns, the M3 would be the choice especially if you intend to drive the car in the city.

The M3 is a wonderful car. In fact in coupe form it will probably out perform most Ferraris out there including the 360 and 550. But, it is no Ferrari. As a daily driver, I would pick the M3. For a weekend warrior, nothing beats a Ferrari.

I hope you guys could help me. I live in Brooklyn NY. I love the 355 gts. RIght now prices are dropping. People are telling me not to get a Ferrari because we live in a barbaric society(NYC), the roads suck and that its not practical. I have one other car which I drive as daily driver. The other car in the picture is a new M3 cabrio. I can get one loaded with tax and hardtop for 64k. about half the price of a 355. So that is my dillema...any info would help me a great deal.
