I agree it's a shame not to drive the car, but at the end of the day it's up to the person that bought it what they do with it.

If this guy wants to spend $1m or $10m on a car to treat as a work of art and not drive then that's his decision.

At least we can all have a laugh at him as he'll never realise what he is missing by not driving it.

Justyn.

I'm with Bart this really bothers me. Come on what is this owner saving this car for? It is not like he will need the money later on down the road to justify keeping the car in never driven condition. These cars have an engine and working parts for a reason they are not 1:1 models OK. It is one thing if the guy has 15 other cars to drive, and then if he drove it 1,000 miles a year it would make sense. But, he isn't even going to drive it 300 i bet. I don't know about you guys but as an 18 year old I can rack up about a couple hundred miles in a week, and most of that is going to out and to people's houses not even school. So, just driving around and out he could easily go a few hundred miles. But, I know as others have said these enzo's will show up with 0 miles on them in 10 years.

Matt,
The collection is insane, and I only mentioned half the cars in it. He's got a Mclaren F1 too but it's getting work done so I didn't get to see it. I don't really want to give out his name but he's a former VP of a network company and one of the nicest guys I have ever met. He met me at his "garage" at 8am one morning to show me the cars. He was very giving with his time (I was there almost 3 hours) and gave me the whole history on each car. I sat in each one and it is amazing to see how Ferrari evolved it's super cars. It was truly a wonderful experience for someone like me.

I did not drive any of them (nor was it offered)and I really didn't want to (I've already spent some good time behind the wheel of an F40 and F50, in addition to the "regular" F-cars). At this point, where I am so close to buying my first F- or L- car, driving the special F-cars clouds my judgment a little. Besides, I have recently come to the conclusion that it's a little premature to get one of the special cars. I am probably going to get with a 360 or Gallardo, which are both fantastic cars with gobs of character (I have not driven the G yet, though). Then, when I feel that I am truly an aficionado, after having experienced the true joy of owning and caring for these cars, then hopefully I will buy an F40, my favourite Ferrari of all time. After seeing that collection last week, I have come to the conclusion that I am just not ready.

But I will tell you, whatever car I own at any particular time will be driven, will be cared for, and will be maintained. None of this keeping it in the garage (or living room) so that I don't have to care for it and clean it or maintain it or worrying about depreciation. These cars are meant to be driven.

Last week, I was talking a to guy who has an Enzo, F40, F50, 288GTO, every current Ferrari model, a Murcielago, GT2, etc. I asked him if he drives them all (he does) and he told me the story of the 288GTO. It belonged to a Ford Executive who had it in one of those plastic bubbles for its entire life. When he sold to the current owner, it needed a thousands of dollars in work because every single bit of rubber in the engine had dried out and everything had to be taken out and replaced. He had to change a lot of other bits too.

I know what the appeal is to not driving them: the cars lok so perfect when they are delivered and no one wants it to get scratched or nicked from road debris. Some people are afraid of the miles. Somewhere along the line, people got the message that driving these cars is some form of abuse to the machinery. Really, Mark Moon said it best in an email to me: these cars need exercise.

I dont understand the mentality of these people. I thought Ferrari was trying to curb this kind of behavior by picking owners who would drive / race these cars. What happened?

And to people who say its a $1,200,000* car and everything is expensive on it. $13,800* brakes, $72,992* full brake job, $11,678* (per year in) insurance, blah, blah, blah granted this car is very expensive to maintain; But if you can afford to purchase it that means you have AT LEAST $20,000,000. And dont tell me youll need a full brake job every year.

So really, if you look at the price to maintenance to (owner) income ratio of this car it is equivalent to a Honda Civic and its owner.

*the above values where taken from Nikkas article (in the Toronto Star) about the Enzo and converted to US currency from Canadian currency (at and exchange rate of $1.37).

When we get the money we can decide whether or not to drive our Enzo. This guy made his decision.

On the lighter side, one might say MS is the ultimate Ferrari driver and his 2003GA is the ultimate Ferrari. Considering he only drives it 5000 miles a year, is it a low mileage car?

A while ago in the UK some business went bust, when the liqudators came in they found a brand new Jaguar XJ220 behind a sealed brick wall. The 2 gents had bought it as an investment and never driven it, problem was when it was discovered it was worth about a 5th of the original price - serves them right.

Ryan

that has happened before
i remeber reading about an american owner who ordered an F40, when the car arrived he drove i home, the previous day some walls where pulled down so that he could drive the car straight in, after that they rebuilded the walls
his comment: he didn't really use his livingroom so now he had a reason to go in that room to look at his F40

That is sad. I'm even more dissapointed with Schumacher's manager, he should know better.

Jim, I'm not aware of a mandatory waiting period with the Enzo. Also, you would have to be really lucky to make $400,000 by flipping one. I think if you know where to look they can be had for not much more than sticker.

The sad truth is that if you can get one from the dealer you make a cool $400K by turning it around with no miles (after the mandatory waiting period), right?

Jeff, I understand it's a big investment... but it's still a $1,000,000 *car.*

Driving is it's purpose and design. If you had a $100,000 fountain pen (fair analogy?), which wrote like a pen, but ever so beautifully - even if it wasn't the pen in your pocket every day, wouldn't you write letters to your family with it, Christmas cards, etc.?

Or perhaps buying a house without intent to ever live in it.

Mark - that's crazy - the guy had it in his living room?!! I mean, yeah, I've thought of that jokingly, but to actually do it... seems so vain and futile.

Bravo for unleashing it.

I don't blame the guy, it's a $1,000,000 car who would want to drive it in LA? You would need to be filthy rich and not care or crazy,I'd take it to the track and putt around, thats a big difference between driving a $100k car on the street

I am not surprised really. There are alot of "collectors" out there more interested in a trophy car or an investment.
My F512M was driven 4,200 miles in its first 7 years of existence. One of the previous owners had it in his living room. The gentleman I bought if from admitted he never had it over 90MPH!!!
I am proud to say I have driven it over 3,400 miles in the first year with me.
God, that guy has no idea what he missed out on!

Regards,
Mark

I just left Ferrari of Orange County. In the back was a black Enzo which they were getting ready for delivery. Black is a nice color for it. Anyway, as I was talking to the people there, I said that there would be many people who would see an Enzo for the first time as the new owner drove home his new toy. No, no! they said. See that blue van over there. It will be taking the car to the owners home and the car will not be driven.

Crap. I think the car knew it would not be alive but just a trophy. It did not feel happy. What a waste of a beast which should be alive on the road.

ps: Mine hit 40,000 miles this week.
