This is exactly why I laugh to myself when people say 'by the seat of my pants, I can really tell the difference in power' when talking about a new air filter, exhaust, etc...

I love that one.

Mark, as soon as i hit post i wondered if someone would mention turbos! Interesting though is that with motec you can adjust just about everything..injection timing, duration, ignition timing...you name it...yet NONE of that improves on what Ferrari already had! I think we tend to underestimate them sometimes. Point is, anyone who claims that they sell aftermarket chips that guarantee any increase in performance, or an exhaust or air filters (also tried those) would have a VERY hard time convincing me that their product could make the slightest difference. I probably should have pointed out that all the 355s tested were the early models and they (the non motec ones) had the motronic 2.7?? i think it is.

of course - peter was just talking about minor mods. put a blower on it or a turbo and the curves will have to change.

--anything you do to a 355 powerwise is a waste of time--

Well that not completely true, on any modern car air filters and mufflers don't do much, but adding boost always works.

Oh, sorry Doody...yes...there are obvious sound differences, but otherwise, no matter what people tell you, anything you do to a 355 powerwise is a waste of time!

The tester chooses a gear (usually 4th from memory) and runs it to around red line.

What happens at very low speed at the beginning of the test is innacurate due to the time delay in the take up of the dyno, so ignore that.

aural stimulation aside, one might conclude from this data that the motec and exhaust changes on F355s have no material effect on performance, other than below 25 mph?

I assume the blue line is the 550. Why does it stop at only 165 kilometer per hour?

Just in case anyone is interested, I'm including a dyno graph of 4 F355s with various exhausts and one with motec. The results are obvious. I'm also including a graph of a 355 v a 550.
